PBS to Broadcast Samuel Mockbee Documentary Citizen Architect
Posted in: UncategorizedTune in to PBS later this month, when the network will air Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio, a documentary on the architect Samuel “Sambo” Mockbee (1944-2001) and his radical educational design/build program to create architecture that not only elevates the living standards of the rural poor but also provides “shelter for the soul” in Hale County, Alabama. Directed by Sam Wainright Douglas, a veteran filmmaker and Mockbee’s son-in-law, the hour-long film features frank interviews with the Rural Studio founder and his peers (including Peter Eisenman and Cameron Sinclair) while documenting the creation of a home for Alabama resident Jimmie Lee Matthews, a soul music aficionado known as Music Man. “We wanted to produce a film that followed a project from start to finish, so you could see the impact the experience was having on students, while also allowing Mockbee to explain the Rural Studio and his motivations, allowing you to get to know this amiable, thoughtful person,” says Douglas, who co-produced the film with Jay Sanders, Sarah Ann Mockbee, and Jeff Fraley. “We also tried to show his impact on the profession beyond the borders of Alabama and have a larger discussion about architecture’s role in our lives, education, citizenship, and social priorities.” Check your local PBS listings for airdates and click here to watch the trailer.

CG Partners Adds Two Partners
Posted in: UncategorizedAnd now they are five. C&G Partners, the interdisciplinary and superhumanly creative design firm founded by Steff Geissbuhler, Keith Helmetag, Emanuela Frigerio, and Jonathan Alger, has added two partners to its ranks: Maya Kopytman (left) and Amy Siegel (right). The recently announced appointments highlight the New York firm’s expertise in interface design, signage, and print graphics. Kopytman, who joined C&G as an associate partner in 2006, heads the firm’s interactive design practice. She has led many projects, including websites for Riverkeeper, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and ARTstor. Siegel, who specializes in signage and environmental graphics, has been with C&G since 1998. She recently completed a stellar sign program for the Hearst Tower as well as sign programs for the new Yankee Stadium and the Bank of America Tower. Siegel is currently working on the 9/11 Memorial Site and Museum at Ground Zero and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens.

Posted in: UncategorizedA new iPhone app puts 32,000 works of art in your pocket
Building on their esteemed collection, innovative programming, and an already digitally-savvy approach, MoMA continues to position itself as a standard-bearing institution of the 21st century with today’s release of their free iPhone application. The mobile software integrates familiar features from the museum, like wall text and audio tours, with a vast database of info—putting everything from event calendars and a glossary to artist bios and 32,000 works of art into your pocket.
Other clever features include the ability to take a pic and send it as a postcard, and the option to listen to your own iTunes while using the app. With an in-house-designed interface optimized for looking at art on the iPhone 4’s hi-res screen, MoMA keeps the art interactivity rich without sacrificing an intuitive user experience.

Crazy FLIP ship designed to change its orientation–from horizontal to vertical
Posted in: UncategorizedpThis has got to be the weirdest oceangoing vessel I’ve ever seen: The A HREF=”http://www-mpl.ucsd.edu/resources/flip.intro.html” FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform)/A was a ship apparently built in 1962 as a research platform. After being towed to its target site in a horizontal, normal ship position, ballast tanks begin taking on water–and the ship pivots 90 degrees, sending the bow some 300 feet below the surface, while the tail end rides above the waves, bristling with cranes presumably used to lower equipment./p
pimg alt=”0flipship.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/0flipship.jpg” width=”468″ height=”330″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p
pWhy the pivot? In rough seas that would toss normal ships about, the FLIP’s unique alignment allows it to “anchor” itself in the calm waters below the surface, making for an exceptionally stable (and portable) platform./p

Must Have Now: Cracked Heart Compact by Marc Jacobs
Posted in: UncategorizedMy favorite part of the Marc by Marc Jacobs store is perusing the special items section. There are plenty of cute items in a super affordable price range. For a student like me who’s pretty much always on a tight budget it’s nice to know that high end designers like Marc Jacobs don’t forget about the little people, and still create items that I can snatch up without breaking the bank. Sometimes, all it takes is a little pick-me-up during the week to make everything better. That’s why when I found this cracked heart compact mirror from Marc by Marc Jacobs I couldn’t help but smile. 5 dollars and an endearing design? Count me in! This mirror will make all your worries disappear with its quirky cartoony design and cute imitation crack on the top. How can you not love these specialty items? Quite honestly, they’re adorable. |

Materials: What exactly can Apple’s new Liquidmetal do?
Posted in: Uncategorizedpimg alt=”0applemetal2.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0applemetal2.jpg” width=”468″ height=”344″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p
pThe web is abuzz with news of Apple’s acquisition of a company called Liquidmetal Technologies Inc., a onetime NASA collaborator whose A HREF=”http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/technologies/liquidmetal.html” namesake material/A is a fast-cooling alloy mix twice as strong as titanium./p
pWe can expect tons of speculation on what Apple might do with such a metal, design-wise, and 99% of the rumors will of course be nonsense. But for an example of what can actually, and has been, done with this material, check out this manufacturing vid from watchmaker Omega:/p
