Origami Stair by Bell Phillips
Posted in: UncategorizedArchitects Bell Phillips created this folded stainless steel staircase for a south London home.
Entitled Origami Stair, the project links two existing apartments to form one duplex in the Victorian building.
The six millimeter-thick steps are framed with a glass balustrade.
Photographs are by Kilian O’Sullivan.
Here’s some text from Bell Phillips Architects:
ORIGAMI STAIR Camberwell, London
Bell Phillips architects have completed this dramatic stainless steel stair for a private client in South London.
The stair sits within a double-height hallway which is the centrepiece of a domestic refurbishment to an existing Victorian property that amalgamates two flats into a single duplex unit.
The stair has distinctive silhouette created from a complex geometry of folded triangular facets which appear to float effortlessly within the space. These facets are fabricated from 6mm stainless steel with a brushed finish selected to accentuate the light from the rooflight above. An elegant toughened glass balustrade completes the composition.
Bell Phillips architects are a dynamic practice based in South-East London that is committed to providing a highly professional service with the aim of generating elegant, appropriate and sensitive designs.
The practice has a rigorous and committed approach with a specific concern for the close integration of architecture with other disciplines to produce innovative, creative and cost-effective solutions that makes a positive impact on the quality of people’s lives, that is rooted to its context, and which is inspiring and uplifting.
The practice has recently been shortlisted for the Sustainable Housing Design Team of the Year in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2010.

128 Vintage, old school calculators
Posted in: Uncategorizedpimg alt=”adman.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/adman.jpg” width=”468″ height=”530″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p
pThere is a simple paradox I’ve noticed in product design; the objects with the most direct functions have a greater amount of accepted options in the marketplace. Two excellent examples of this are the chair and the watch. It would be difficult to think of two simpler functions and you would be hard pressed to find products with more choice in form, execution, and price./p
pIn the 1970s, the simple calculator was one such item, as ubiquitous as they were varied. Vintage Technology has 128 examples on display with detailed specs and reviews. Worth it just for fantastic names like The Adman 830 and the Intercord Electronic 101! Some of my faves are above, but be sure to check out the full selection a href=”http://www.vintage-technology.info/pages/calculators/general/calccompany.htm”here/a. /p

Guest information packets: Be organized before your house guests arrive
Posted in: UncategorizedLifehacker has had a series the past couple weeks on how to be a good host and house guest in today’s society. Contained in their post “How to Be the Perfect Host in the 21st Century” is a wonderful section on how to be organized before a guest arrives. One of their ideas is to create a Guest Information Packet with details about your home and your area:
Whether you’re filling out the packet we’ve provided for you or you’re building your own from scratch you’ll want to include information that helps your guest be autonomous. Our guest packet includes spots for useful information like informing your guests about household quirks. It takes a few minutes for the hot water to get all the way from the basement of your apartment building? Make a note that they should run the hot water while they brush their teeth to get it shower-ready. Have a dog with a delicate constitution? Make a note that table scraps will make everybody miserable. Militant parking regulations? Make sure your guest knows their rental car will get the boot if they park on the street after 2AM.
They provide a detailed Guest Information Packet you can download for free and then fill in the information specific to your home.
