Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Hires Nicolas Olsberg to Dig Through Its Archives

0816frankarch.jpg

Six years after retiring from his long-held post as director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Nicolas Olsberg has taken up a new position with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. For the next six months, he’ll spend his time carefully digging through the famous architect’s massive, relatively-untouched archives. The collection is said to include 22,000 architectural drawings, 40,000 photographs, 600 manuscripts and 300,000 pieces of correspondence. And more crazy than the sheer volume is that all of it just been sitting “housed in a plain space the size of a utility closet at Taliesin West,” reports the Arizona Republic (albeit, a closet that’s “humidity- and temperature-controlled” of course). Now that they’ve hired Olsberg, they can finally start figuring out just what’s there and what they feel is important to share with the public, as well as deciding where to relocate the collection once it’s all gone through, perhaps even designing a new building for it on the Taliesin property.

These decanters by London designers Kacper Hamilton and Ezgi Turksoy have stoppers made from found glass scraps.

Called Minarets, the collection is named in reference to the Istanbul skyline and consists of eight pieces in sandblasted glass.

The fragments used as stoppers were found at a London glass workshop and combined with specially made vessels to complete the decanters.

The project will be exhibited at Mint shop during the London Design Festival next month.

Here’s some more from the designers:

Minarets (by Ezgi Turksoy & Kacper Hamilton) :

Turkish designer Ezgi Turksoy and British designer Kacper Hamilton have come together to collaborate on a project inspired by found scrap objects. The designers are both based in London and work on individual and collaborative design work.

Minarets by Ezgi Turksoy & Kacper Hamilton

‘Minarets’ are a series of glass decanters designed by duo ‘Hamilton Turksoy’. The designers were inspired by scrap glass pieces found at a glass blowers workshop in London.

They found a strange beauty within each scrap piece as they contained natural flaws from the process of blowing glass, which cannot normally be made intentionally or replicated.

The forms of the found pieces have a strong visual reference of an architectural landscape, which reminded the designers of Istanbul with its tall Minarets towering above the rest of the city.

The design duo have created an edition of 8 unique decanters, which use the scrap glass pieces as the main feature. They act as stoppers and can also be used as drinking glasses, whilst the large vessels hold the desired liquid.

The ‘Minarets’ will be exclusively exhibited at Mint for the London Design Festival 2010.

Dysons Recent Burst of Hiring Leads to Speculation

0816dyhiring.jpg

Staying in the UK a bit longer this morning, it appears that James Dyson and his company has something big and new cooking. Or rather, potentially a lot of new somethings. The product design company has recently hired 100 new engineers. This following their huge bump back in April when they announced that they planned to take their engineering team from 350 to 700 people (though most likely this new 100 is fitting within that original increase). What’s more, the company has just put out a call for 15 new employees for their marketing department, telling Brand Republic that they’re “developing lots of new ideas, so we need to expand our team to help us tell people about them.” The sudden increase in hiring has led people to speculate what the company is working on, including going back to the video released for their Air Multiplier wherein a portion of a certain shot was blurred out. Will it result in something so mind bogglingly cool that it will forever change the way we live, or a lot of hype and a disappointing payoff, like when Dean Kamen finally released the Segway? Only time will tell. Godspeed on your top secret projects, mysterious new engineers!

Here’s some more information from organisers The Lollipop Shoppe:

The Lollipop Shoppe launch Bench 10 – a public design installation during the London Design Festival.

To celebrate the 2010 London Design Festival and to mark the launch of their London store, the Lollipop Shoppe have invited ten influential furniture designers from across Europe to each create a bench for a public design installation. Contemporary public furniture today is largely utilitarian, to be sat on or eaten off. As a functional object offering the benefits of rest and reflection, time-out in a busy world, The Lollipop Shoppe felt that the humble bench deserved an updated, innovative design that really celebrated its possibilities. With this in mind, along with other recent public art initiatives that have taken the capital by storm, they have invited ten leading designers to create their own interpretation of the public seat, for a micro-exhibition that will be held on The Lollipop Shoppe’s own Old Spitalfields Market doorstep and will run throughout the festival.

Shay Alkalay / Yael Mer, Cecile Manz, Decode London, Felix De Pass, JDS Architects, Klauser & Carpenter, Michael Marriott/Anthony Burrill, Richard Shed, TAF Architects, Freshwest and Offcut Design will each design a bench that will be installed in and around the recently revitalised Old Spitalfields Market, the hub of the London design scene, from the 18th – 28th September 2010.

Each unique bench will have a plaque explaining the design concept, materials, process and biographical information about the designer. Festival visitors tempted to buy a bench can contact The Lollipop Shoppe to make an offer.

Bench Name – Solid Shell

Design – Decode / voonwong&bensonsaw

As its name indicates, the shell chair has been designed by looking at how an organism in nature develops its structure. Layer by layer like a tree or a sea shell, and based on a repetitive but adaptable equation, the 4mm wire rods forming the seat, follow the circular rim of the chair. Equally, we wanted the chair to have a very straightforward and welcoming appearance. The softly angled concrete base provides a simple mechanism to anchor the lightweight structure of the chair in public spaces. Symmetry, minimal structure and comfort characterise this outdoor and indoor seat .

Materials – Cast concrete base with seat in powder-coated steel wire rod

Decode is a partnership between Ryan Malone and Giles Massie-Taylor established in October 2007 to showcase the creative talent of London based designers. Taking inspiration from London, they look to bring together many diverse elements with the vision to present a unified collection of progressive design that echoes the creativity of the Capital.

VW+BS are a London based multi disciplinary design practice who began collaboration in September 2001. They draw upon their different backgrounds in architecture, engineering and product design to lend a unique perspective to furniture, lighting, product design, architecture and interior design.

Tent London & Origin

BENCH 10 also coincides with the ground-breaking design show, Tent London and the Crafts Council’s annual fair, Origin. Origin is being held within the Old Spitalfields Market itself and Tent London is just a stone’s throw away at The Old Truman Brewery. The 10 unique benches will be tempting the tens of thousands of design-savvy visitors who visit the area with a welcome opportunity to stop and reflect.
