Arno Piroud makes the city smile
Posted in: UncategorizedGestalten.tv has a filmed interview with artist Arno Piroud on its website, in support of the recent Urban Interventions title. Piroud’s art is most at home on city streets, unashamedly amusing passersby…
From his Ephemeral Seats that recondition the trunks of chopped-down trees (some of which have lasted up to two years before being removed), to the heart-shaped filters he applies to traffic lights, Piroud is not afraid of creating amusing art.
Our favourite piece shown in the Gestalten.tv film is the tennis court he painted onto a neighbouring roof (above). He is, he says, attempting to “put fiction in reality” in his pursuit of making “contemporary art about the city”.
More of his work is at starnocity.com.
Piroud’s work features in Urban Interventions, published by Gestalten.

Video of Nokia’s new X3 phone interface and physical form
Posted in: UncategorizedpThe first half of this video shows the new interface for Nokia’s X3 phone, which combines a physical keypad with a touchscreen, and it looks like they’ve done a nice job incorporating touch. The second half of the video goes over the object’s physical form./p

“European architects positive about possibilities of prefab” – Arch-Vision
Posted in: Uncategorized
Dezeenwire: European architects are becoming more enthusiastic about using prefabricated elements according to a report by Rotterdam research agency Arch-Vision. See press release below.
European architects positive about design possibilities of prefab
The operational advantages of prefab elements were acknowledged by architects shortly after their introduction. However, the limited diversity was a frequently heard complaint made by architects. The application of prefab elements was said to be at the expense of the architectural design, due to the uniformity of prefab. Since then, prefab elements have been further developed successfully. As a result, architects are nowadays much more enthusiastic about the application of prefab elements.
The European Architectural Barometer shows that 86% of the Dutch architects say they can create good looking architectural design by using prefab nowadays. Architects in Italy (75%), France (67%) and the UK (53%) confirm this notion. Only the German architects (29%) do not agree. On the contrary, even 47% of the German architects (strongly) disagree.
Nonetheless, 61% of the German architects expect an increase in application of prefab elements due to a shrinking labour market. Also French (63%) and Dutch (53%) architects expect an increase for the same reasons.
These and many other results are shown in the European Architectural Barometer, an international research among 1200 architects in Europe. Four times a year, this study is conducted by Arch-Vision in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. The research covers the developments of architectural turnover and order volumes. Besides these economic statistics, a topic is highlighted each quarter. This is because architects are not only a good indicator for future building volumes, but they also are a main influence on how projects are built and what kind of material is used.
Judge Rules That Towel Designer Cant Trademark a Circle
Posted in: UncategorizedIf you take home one lesson from our humble little blog today, please let it be this: you can’t trademark a circle. We now know this because former film producer Clemens Franek has lost his appeal to trademark his three decades-old, successful circular beach towels. Franek had filed lawsuits in 2006 after three retailers began selling their own similarly-shapped towels. Unfortunately for the inventor, the judge in the case has struck down his appeal and won’t be able to protect his work. A sad story in some ways, but also difficult to shake those “but it’s just a circle!” thoughts out of your head, too. Here’s a bit from the Chicago Tribune:
In a tongue-in-cheek decision that references the Huey Lewis and the News hit “Hip to be Square” and the Euclidean geometry involved with designing such a towel, Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook writes that Franek should have pursued a design patent or created a distinctive mark to brand his towels.
“Franek wants to trademark the circle,” he writes, later adding, “We cannot permit him to keep the indefinite competitive advantage in producing beach towels this trademark creates.”

Hang and Level
Posted in: Uncategorized Art hanging made simple with an all-in-one device
Unless you’re after a “Beetlejuice” decor scheme, you’ve probably at one point struggled with hanging a picture on a crooked wall or with awkward tools. Combining a level and marking device in one, the same company that brought you the Stoppy (Under the Roof Decorating) came up with the Hang and Level to take the guesswork out of picture hanging.
Where most hanging tools don’t pinpoint the placement of the nail, this one marks the exact spot with just the push of a button, works with all types of hanging hardware and supports decor weighing up to 20 pounds. Once in place, two separate levels align your De Kooning (or what have you) vertically or horizontally. Easy to hold and to use, it makes a commonly frustrating process much more manageable.
Pick it up for $20 from Under the Roof’s online store.
