SCAD’s two-for-one creative conferences in October

pKilling two birds with one stone, the design way: In October the Savannah College of Art and Design will be hosting two conferences at once, studiously arranging the schedules “so that attendees from either event can attend keynote speeches from the other conference without paying extra cost and without having to miss anything from their own conference.” /p

pThe first event, quite fittingly, is the 2ND Annual Collaborative Innovative Networks (COINs) Conference, which “[brings] together a multi-disciplinary, international group of practitioners, researchers and students of the emerging science of collaboration.” The second event is A HREF=”www.designethos.org” Design Ethos/A, a four-day conference on the future of design education./p

p”This once-in-a-lifetime intersection of the world’s most noted forward-thinking designers will foster an extraordinary sharing of knowledge and ideas,” says SCAD Graphic Design chair John Waters. “We expect the energy in the room to be virtually combustible.” /p

Juan James: burka board

What will be your legacy?

During a presentation at a conference I attended a couple years ago, Illinois-based professional organizer Sue DeRoos made the obvious, yet insightful comment:

Everyone gets organized at some point, they just might not be around for it.

DeRoos’ comment was morbid, but absolutely true. At some point, someone is responsible for sorting, purging, and getting your affairs in order — either you do it while you’re alive, or your loved ones do it after your gone.

I was reminded of Sue’s comment after reading The New York Times online editorial “How to Lose a Legacy” from July 12. The author, Ellen Lupton, uses the op-ed to express her mixed emotions about her possessions, specifically her fears that her things won’t be of value to her daughter after she is gone:

I probably wouldn’t have kept [a set of Wedgwood cornflower blue china inherited from my mother’s mother] if I had bought them in a junk shop 20 years ago. But they were my grandmother’s, so I keep them safe, and take them out a few times a year for family celebrations. As I wash each piece by hand, I wonder, with a pang of melancholy, if my daughter will someday do the same.

I had somewhat of a negative reaction to Lupton’s piece. I stand more firmly in DeRoos’ camp. I think that if you truly love people, you don’t want to burden them with your clutter after you’re gone. You want to make things as simple as possible for them, not bog them down with guilt, piles of stuff, and responsibilities. I hope to ease their grief, not make it worse.

What are your reactions to the DeRoos quote and Lupton’s piece? What are your thoughts about what you plan to leave behind? Yes, it’s morbid to ponder, but we are mortal. What do you want to be your legacy?

Dutch architects Zeinstra van Gelderen architecten have designed this one-man pavilion made entirely of rubber.

The Rubber Pavilion is entered though a slit and has a bench in one wall and a window frame, which cannot be seen through, in another.

The entire pavilion including the bench and window frame are formed from resin poured into a mold.

The pavilion will be on display at the Museum Bahnsteig in Oberhausen, Germany from Wednesday 25 August until the 1 October, and then will sit in front of the Schauspielhaus in Bochum from 4 to 8 October.

Here’s some more from the architects:

“I have often thought that probably there might be a way found out to make an artificial glutinous composition much resembling that excrement out of which the silk worm wire-draws his clew” Robert Hooke, 1664

The Rubber House is a small pavilion, completely made out of rubber. The house can be entered, one person at a time, to retreat from the outside and to find oneself again. The introvert character of the pavilion is reinforced by the hollow acoustics of the interior. Partly translucent walls enlighten the space during the day Unlike what you might expect, the Rubber House is all about mass and weight.

The house is an amber-coloured rectangular monolith (outside dimensions 1,5x 1,5 x 2,3 m) in which an egg shaped interior seems to be carved out. One wall offers a small bench and another a window-frame with no view. The entrance is nothing more than a vertical cut in a third wall. The whole house, including bench and window-frame, is made out of poured in place urethane resin.

The Rubber House will be the main source of inspiration for a performance by the dramaturg Tjyying Liu in the first week of October 2010 on the square in front of the Schauspielhaus Bochum. Before that, it will also be on display in Oberhausen as part of the ISEA2010 conference, the International Symposium on Electronic Art. From August 25 till October 1 it will be on display at the Museumbahnsteig in Oberhausen. The Rubberhouse has been made possible by a grant from the Fonds BKVB

(the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture) and is produced by ‘Anything is Possible’, Amsterdam

The Looftlighter

Start your next fire with a 1000°F electric wand

Looftlighter.jpg Looftlighter-Grill.jpg

Sick of grilled chicken tasting like lighter fluid, theater director Richard Looft made his first prototype by using a reversed vacuum to blow air onto a toaster filled with charcoal. When he saw that the coal was ready to use in just a few minutes, the concept for the Looftlighter was born. The resulting curling-iron-shaped device produces 1000°F electric heat to ignite anything from charcoal to wood with the touch of a button.

It also makes re-starting charcoal easier, and you can still go for the slow start by just using the lighter a little bit—not to mention the fun of wielding a magic fire wand. Plus, eliminating lighter fluid from the process not only makes summer nostalgia more pure, but cuts down on the toxic fumes, the production of the petroleum-based product, and burn injuries resulting from unattended fires.

You’ll soon be able to buy the Looftlighter and accessories directly from the source, but in the meantime pick it up from ThinkGeek for $80.
