In-car computing for the luxury set

pSomething I’ve seen a lot of on my nocturnal Manhattan dogwalks: Idling ambulances and parked Lincoln Town Cars with the drivers in them, heads always inclined downwards at the same angle, eyes open, faces lit from a bluish-white source below. Get closer and you see they’re on laptops, killing time while waiting for their next call to come in, and with their vehicle strategically parked near a building with good wi-fi./p

pAs I used to drive an ambulance myself, I can tell you that these drivers are working-class guys for whom a laptop is a huge improvement over the dog-eared issue of the IDaily News/I or IEl Diario/I that used to suffice as a time-killer. It’s also a recent-enough phenomenon that having to wedge it between your lap and the steering wheel has probably not yet registered as a hassle./p

pBut that’s in the front seat. For wealthy passengers who ride in the backs of cars, that won’t do. This, on the other hand, will:/p

Newly Redesigned British Passport Unveiled

0827newpass.jpg

Staying in the UK a bit longer this morning, the national government’s Home Office has unveiled the new British passport this week. They’ve updated the layouts and general aesthetics, as you’d expect, but the meat and potatoes of the changes are the redesigned security features. They’ve moved the implanted RFID chip to the inside cover, both to protect it from potential damage better and to make it more difficult to swap out. They’ve also added an additional printing of the passport holder and added a new transparent covering with several holograms, also making it more difficult to alter or forge. So confident are they in the new design, they’ve even put up a few scans of the new booklets on Flickr. They’ll be released in October, but if you can’t wait to see them in action (they’re still essentially just small books, remember, so don’t get too excited), here’s a brief video put out by the Home Office:

Ferry Terminal by C. F. Møller

Ferry Terminal Stockholm by CF Moller

Danish architects C. F. Møller have won a competition to design a new ferry terminal in Stockholm, Sweden.

The terminal will service Stockholm’s ferry connection to Finland and the Baltics.

The massing of the new building is inspired by traditional maritime architecture and its exterior will be clad in expanded mesh.

The new terminal will form part of Norra Djurgårdsstaden, a residential and commercial development in the Stockholm city suburb Hjorthagen.

The terminal will be raised to the same height as the neighbouring development and linked to it via a bridge.

The roof of the terminal will be landscaped to become a public green space and embedded with solar cells to generate power for the self-sufficient structure.

Here’s some more from the architects:

New terminal for Stockholm’s permanent ferry connections to Finland and the Baltics

The new terminal for Stockholm’s permanent ferry connections to Finland and the Baltics will be a landmark for the new urban development Norra Djursgårdsstaden – both architecturally and environmentally.

The terminal, which will have a facade covered with expanded mesh, recalls the shape of a moving vessel and the architecture – with large cranes and warehouses – that previously characterized the ports.

At the same time, the terminal has an ambitious sustainable profile, characteristic of the entire development.

The main idea has been to create natural links between central Stockholm and the new urban area in connection with the terminal, so that city life will naturally flow into the area.

Therefore the terminal is raised to be at level with the urban zone, so it is easy for both pedestrians and traffic to access.

At the same time the roof of the terminal building is designed as a varied green landscape with stairs, ramps, niches, and cosy corners, inviting both Stockholmers and passengers for a stroll or relaxing moments, while enjoying the view of the ferries, the archipelago, and the city skyline.

Ferry Terminal Stockholm by CF Moller

The aim is that the ferry terminal will be predominantly self-sufficient in energy and thus stand as an environmental model for public construction.

Therefore the architecture of the terminal will integrate i.e. solar and wind power, for example the terraced landscape on the roof will integrate beds of solar cells along with the planting.

The plan is to communicate the sustainable efforts to the people in the building by using i.e. centrally placed television screens, helping to raise awareness of the potential of sustainable construction.

Ugmonk

A minimalist graphic tee brand celebrates their second year with a limited-edition box set

ugmonk2nd_anni_shirt.jpg

Just two short years ago Burlington, Vermont resident Jeff Sheldon founded
Ugmonk
with a straightforward mission to produce high-quality products with simple, fresh designs. What started as a small side project—a way to marry his passion for typography and t-shirt design—quickly grew to much more than that. Thousands of shirts later, he recently decided to leave his traditional “day job” and do Ugmonk full-time.

ugmonk_details_01.jpg

The current Ugmonk collection consists of around 25 different t-shirts and hoodies with lots of new designs being added in the coming months. To celebrate the two-year mark, Sheldon just released a special Limited Edition 2nd Anniversary Collector’s Set. Each includes a two-color discharge print on a charcoal gray tee, a numbered wooden coin, and Ugmonk collector’s card, all packed in a custom wooden box.

Only 200 of these sets will ever be made so grab yours for $50 at
