Champagne bottles getting a subtle re-design

pimg alt=”0corkshot.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/0corkshot.jpg” width=”468″ height=”280″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pI once accidentally shot a girl I was trying to date in the head with a champagne cork. She was standing next to me as I opened the bottle; the cork slipped my grasp, shot straight up, hit the ceiling, and came down squarely atop her noggin. It all happened in a second and I didn’t even realize what had happened–I basically opened the bottle, heard a pop and then she fell down, holding her head and going “Fuuuuuuck!” (Afterwards she was fine, though our budding romance was not.)/p

pThe amount of pressure inside a champagne bottle, in addition to being calibrated to destroy my relationships, is much greater than what’s inside a bottle of beer. To prevent explosions, champagne bottles are made extra-thick and extra-heavy, nearly two pounds each. Multiply that by the 300 million bottles of Champagne that France ships every year and you’ve got a lot of carbon emissions. To combat this, the French are developing a new, slimmer-walled champagne bottle that weighs less./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/champagne_bottles_getting_a_subtle_re-design_17287.asp”(more…)/a

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

De Hogeschool West-Vaanderen graduate Janwillem Van Maele cast this concrete side table inside a suspended fabric mould.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Called Mas IIII, the table was created by stitching the fabric into a net and stapling it to a circular board.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

This was hung upside-down and filled with cement and gravel, then weighted with sand.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Van Maele then drenched the assemblage in water and left the concrete to harden.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

The resulting shape was sanded back before cork feet were added.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Here are some more details from Van Maele:

My product is called “MASS llll”, my final product in school. The project was supervised by instructor Alain Monnens from Idam.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

The MASS |||| is a concrete sidetable with the following production process:

I started with a DWG file for the right shape of the legs. That file can be entered in an industrial embroidery machine. This is automatically sewn.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

The reinforcement is pushed into the mold.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Then I staple the fabric on a wooden plate. This plate maintains over the whole production, so every table would have the same diameter. The plate is the mould for the table top. You can see the stitches are seamless.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

I hung the fabric upside down, a kind of Gaudi’s method. I filled the mould with a dry mix of cement and gravel.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

The sand I poured on ensures that the print of the fabric is also on the bottom of the table.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

I drench the mould with water to activate the chemical reaction.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

After the concrete has solidified in the mold, I took the fabric of it and sawn the legs . For finishing I putted three cork-naps on it, And sanded the edges.

Mass IIII by Janwillem Van Maele

Group Against Modern Art at Versailles Now Fighting to Stop Takashi Murakami Exhibition

0901antivers.jpg

It seems like we’ve been referencing the debate over the late-2008/early-2009 battle to remove Jeff Koons‘ exhibit at Versailles a lot lately. While it only made tangential sense at the time, now it appears that there was something in the air and we were right all along (isn’t that always the way?). Like when Koons’ show was there at the palace of Louis XIV, a group who sees modern art exhibitions as a damaging intrusion into the history of the place is back to fighting it off as Japanese artist Takashi Murakami prepares for a show there which is set to run from mid-September to mid-December. Art Info reports that the group, the Coordination de la Defense de Versailles, has called the upcoming exhibition, “the veritable ‘murder’ of our heritage, our artistic identity, and our most sacred culture.” And once again, support against the project has also come from the same descendant who took Koons to court to try to stop his exhibition, Prince Sixte-Henri de Bourbon. He lost that case and one would imagine that he and the group likely won’t have much success on shutting Murakami down either, given the money involved and the draw these shows have proven to be, but only time will tell. If something big goes down, you’ll hear about it from us. Here’s Art Info’s description of the upcoming exhibition:

The exhibition will display 22 works by Murakami in the château and gardens, including 11 pieces created especially for the occasion. One of his psychedelic flower sculptures, “Flower Matango,” will be featured, along with other sculptures, paintings, and installations. Although the exhibition will not include any pornographic works by Murakami, the organization Versailles Mon Amour (“Versailles, My Love”) has cited such works in order to rally others to its effort to prevent the exhibition from taking place.

The other day I caught a snippet of IGoodFellas/I, the part where Robert Deniro uses a 1970s-era telephone receiver to bludgeon a crony. Try to do that with your iPhone or Droid X and you’d have a confused, unbloodied crony and a cracked touchscreen./p

What month is it?

HOLY CRAP! It’s September. This is one on my favorite times of the year, for many reasons but here are 2 more.

National Bourbon Heritage Month – an observance in the United States that calls for celebration of bourbon as America’s “Native Spirit”. On August 2, 2007, the US Senate declared September 2007 as “National Bourbon Heritage Month.” The bill, sponsored by Republican Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky, passed by unanimous consent. The resolution calls for consumers who enjoy bourbon to do so responsibly and in moderation. The bill reinforces the 1964 Act of Congress that declared bourbon “America’s Native Spirit” by celebrating the family heritage, tradition and deep-rooted legacy that the bourbon industry contributes to the United States.

Unitasker Wednesday: Breading Pans

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

Williams-Sonoma has so many wonderful unitaskers that it almost feels like I’m being lazy when I use one of them in the weekly feature. This week’s unitasker is so specific, though, I just had to bring it to your attention. Introducing the Stainless Steel Breading Pan, Set of 3:

I know you could use these pans for other things (and if you own them, I really hope you do), but as advertised they are strictly for your breading pan needs. You know, for ALL those times you bread things at home. You super breader, you. You’re a breading monster! Bread, bread, bread!

I imagine, however, if you are a regular breader, you already have a system set up for breading things. I bet you use plates and bowls you already own — things you didn’t have to rush out to buy, and things that are wholly effective at breading all those things you bread.

If you are a master breader, and these things speak to you, can you please invite me over for dinner? Because right now, my mouth is watering thinking about fried chicken. I don’t even like chicken, and these Stainless Steel Breading Pans are making me crave it. Crispy, spicy, fried chicken … Mmmmmmmm … Darn you, unitasker!!
