Best Ikea Hack Ever: Starting a Fire

piframe src=”http://player.vimeo.com/video/10322228?title=0amp;byline=0amp;portrait=0″ width=”468″ height=”351″ frameborder=”0″/iframe/p

pHelmut Smit is our new favorite artist/designer, even if a href=”http://helmutsmits.nl/design/flamma”FLAMMA/a was the only project he’d ever done (it isn’t, by the way, and they are all stellar). This brilliant Ikea Hack “harks back to one of humanity’s basic needs: making fire.” As Ikea does not sell matches or lighters, Smits has taken cues from the wartime necessity of burning furniture to keep warm, and created a fire from an Ikea rope, hanger, wine rack, egg cup, napkins, and floral embellishments. /p

pThe video above is worth every minute, not to mention a good lesson in building fires, an art lost on most of us./p

Letterpress Printers Create Notebooks for Youth Mentoring Initiative

feedbackloop.jpg
From left to right, notebooks created by Repeat Press, Smart & Wiley, and kHyal for the Feedback Loop Notebook Project

Before you wrap up your back-to-school shopping, be sure to load up on notebooks for a good cause. The Feedback Loop Notebook Project asked 25 leading leterpress printers to create 50 unique notebooks to benefit Design Ignites Change. The sky’s-the-limit design brief and the ability to choose any stock from Mohawk Fine Papers‘ eco-friendly Loop line made the invitation irresistable, and printers including David Wolske (Smart & Wiley), Allison Chapman (Igloo Letterpress), Matthew Kelsey (MK Printer), and Jessica White (Heroes & Criminals Press) whipped up distinctive notebooks that will be available for purchase beginning Wednesday, September 8, at the Felt & Wire Shop. Every last cent of the $15-per-notebook price will go to support School: by Design, a Design Ignites Change and Designers Accord youth mentoring initiative that asks high school students (in collaboration with their college or professional design mentors) to “redesign your school.” Procrastinators take note: each book is a limited-run edition, so snap them up while you can—or risk getting schooled.

Cool Hunting Video Presents: Bristol Cars

Our video on the world’s only manufacturer of hand-built cars

by Michael Tyburski

For this video we traveled to Kensington, London to check out the sole dealership of Bristol, the only manufacturer in the world that still hand-builds cars. There we met with chairman and owner Toby Silverton, as well as spokesperson Ben Samuelson, who took us on a drive to learn about how they keep their classic aesthetic modern.

Daily Obsesh – Marc by Marc Jabocs Mademoiselle Danger Mini Umbrella

imageThere’s nothing like a good kiss in the rain; so good you don’t even realize you are soaking wet! It’s like a scene out of a romantic movie. But if your knight-in-shining-rain-slicker has yet to reveal himself to you and a romantic rendezvous beneath the clouds isn’t in your near future, then you need a way to brighten up an otherwise gloomy day. Besides, let’s be realistic, boy or no boy, how many of us have really ever kissed under the pouring rain anyway? Most days, when the skies decide to open up, we’re rushing to work with freshly straightened hair or wearing new suede booties, or that fantastic leather jacket just purchased over the weekend. A kiss would be nice, but what we really need is an umbrella! I suggest you kill two birds with one stone and splurge on yourself with this adorable mini umbrella from Marc by Marc Jacobs. The black umbrella is covered in a red lip print and has a sturdy silver metal handle with a red designer stamped handle. It’s also quite small and lightweight, plus it’s less than a foot in length so it fits nicely into your purse and won’t weigh you down. You can keep it in your bag everyday and barely notice it’s there. That way, when your hear the thunder rolling in and the skies start to darken, you’re prepared! This little guy is definitely 100 times more dependable than most men I know (shining rain slicker or not) and a kiss isn’t going to save those suede shoes!

pRunning from September 15th through November 14th, Make-Me is an upcoming exhibition at a href=”http://www.mossonline.com/”Moss/a that brings together a set of artists and designers producing what Moss has coined “Butch-Craft.” Maybe there is no better way to describe this than the words they use themselves: “a cerebral yet virile narrative applied to rough work crafted in wood, iron, steel, marble, rush, paint, boiled leather, clay, baked agricultural waste, plant-life, gypsum drywall, and blood, sweat and tears.” /pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/make-me_the_emergence_of_butch-craft_in_contemporary_design__17314.asp”(more…)/a
