pIDC has put just such a guide together and made it freely available A HREF=”http://www.idc.uk.com/process/inventors-guide/” here/A./p

blockquoteThe process [inventors] must go through and the challenges they have are often very similar. How do you know when the time is right to take the plunge and invest in developing a concept into a commercial product? What are the first safe steps to protecting your idea and how do you go about it? To make the product development journey smoother, our team has put together the IDC Inventors Guide. With an introduction to research and development, the patenting process, confidentiality agreements and costs, as well as advice about seeking outside investment, licensing and marketing, the Inventor’s Guide will help you plan and assess how to profit from your idea./blockquote

Some new record sleeves

CR subscribers might just recognise the style of the above sleeve for Duppy Writer by Roots Manuva meets Wrong Tom – a new album of reworked Roots Manuva tracks (released this week on Big Dada). Yes, it’s by illustrator and art director Tony McDermott, the star of our most recent Monograph

Next up in our latest roundup of new record sleeves is this 12″ cover for Acid Washed‘s forthcoming eponymously titled 12″, which features artwork by Anthony Burrill and No Days Off. Release date is November 1 – through Parisian label, Record Makers.

This is a scan of one side of a 7″ picture disc sent to us by Hello Thor Records. It is the debut single by Anxieteam, a musical collaboration between two visual artists, Jim Avignon and Jon Burgerman. Avignon produced the image that adorns the Let’s Eat Soya side (above) and Burgerman created the image for the Lonely In The Digital World side.

There are, as you might imagine, music videos in the pipeline for these two tunes by this new “power pop cheese slice electronic music band” (their words, not mine)  – but you can get a flavour of the music contained on the disc by watching this YouTube clip:

You’ve seen the video (if you haven’t – visit the previous blog post in which it appeared here) and now here’s the record sleeve. Yes, this is the artwork for the new single for Heathen Child by Nick Cave’s Grinderman outfit (released yesterday on Mute). There’s also a special double A-side 12″ release that not only has the two single tracks, Heathen Child and Star Charmer – BUT it comes a sleeve sporting gold foilblocked text containing a poster – AND the record includes the bonus track, Super Heathen Child, a collaboration between Grinderman and legendary guitarist Robert Fripp.

Grinderman 2, the band’s second album, is out next week and the front cover artwork looks like this:

Design credits for both these Grinderman covers:

Art direction: Nick Cave & Tom Hingston Studio.
Photography: Polly Borland.
The album also contains illustrations by Ilinca Hopfner

The link between personal responsibility and an uncluttered life

All while I was reading Chris Guillebeau’s book, a quote from Orison Swett Marden kept running through my mind:

The golden opportunity you are seeking is in yourself. It is not in your environment, it is not in luck or chance, or the help of others; it is in yourself alone.

Or, more directly: “If you want to make a change, you are the only one who can make that change happen.”

At the heart of uncluttering, organizing, productivity, and all the issues we discuss here on Unclutterer is personal responsibility. If you don’t change your behavior, if you don’t take responsibility for your actions, you will continue on the same path you’re dreading. As long as you are of sound mind and body, only YOU can change your life.

  • You can get to work on the project and meet the deadline.
  • You can put your clothes in the hamper at night.
  • You can sort through the clothes in your closet and keep only the items that fit, look good on you, and represent the person you want to be.
  • You can create a meal plan and stick to it.
  • You can organize your linen closet.
  • You can return e-mails within a timely manner.
  • You can sort through your mail immediately when you walk in your house.
  • You can use a calendar and plan your day.
  • You can take a risk.
  • You can be happy right now.
  • You can follow your dreams.

In The Art of Non-Conformity, Chris makes a similar point:

You must take responsibility for what happens in your future, good or bad. Our past may be somewhat responsible for defining who we are at present, but it does not need to define our future. If you had a terrible childhood or someone deeply hurt you at some point in the past, here is your chance to prove them wrong. If you had a nurturing childhood and have never known deep hurt or social disadvantage, you’re better off that the rest of us. Where much is given, much is required, so it’s time to step it up.

Regardless of where you fall in that spectrum, from here on out, win or lose, you must be willing to take responsibility for yourself.

Good luck, and remember that I believe YOU can do it.

Houseboat by Rost Niderehe Architects

boathouse

Beautiful ‘houseboat’ by Rost Niderehe Architects. The structure sits right on the Eilbekkanal in Hamburg, Germany.

In the words of the architects: ‘The original idea has been to design a houseboat that essentially has the character of a boat in combination with the comfort of a traditional family home.’. I’d say the final results are just what they envisioned. Hit the firm’s website here (hope your German’s good).
