With tons-o-monitor arms, Colebrook Bosson Saunders is ready for the touchscreen revolution

pOnce desktop touchscreens explode in popularity–which will probably happen after Apple releases A HREF=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/apples_desktop-to-touchscreen_patent_presents_some_industrial_design_challenges_17224.asp” their rumored touchscreen iMac/A later this year–PC manufacturers will have to incorporate some serious industrial design to enable screens to travel from viewing height to touch-friendly distance. The standard cheapie monitor stand, which typically looks like an afterthought, just ain’t gonna cut it./p

pA multinational company called A HREF=”http://www.colebrookbossonsaunders.com/about-us.htm” Colebrook Bosson Saunders/A, which made the first monitor arms back in the ’80s, isn’t sitting around waiting for the touchscreen revolution to happen; they’ve already got a full line of monitor arms (above) designed for a variety of situations, ranging from bare-bones simple to precision-adjustment to heavy-duty to height-adjusting. They can be mounted to posts, clamped to desks, and even hung from slatwalls. Check out their lineup A HREF=”http://www.colebrookbossonsaunders.com/products/flat-screen-support.htm” here/A./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/with_tons-o-monitor_arms_colebrook_bosson_saunders_is_ready_for_the_touchscreen_revolution_17338.asp”(more…)/a

Finnish Lahti University of Applied Sciences students Arttu Kuisma and Janne Melajoki have rolled up 250 square-metres of recycled carpet to create this multicoloured chair.

Rrround is made from the presentation carpet used at exhibitions which is normally discarded afterwards.

Here’s some more from the designers:

Rrround.

It won the main prize 6000€ in this years Habitare design competition, meant for young designers. This year’s theme of the competition was a recycled seat suitable for public spaces and limited production runs. The head of the jury was Swiss designer and professor Alfredo Häberli. This is what he comment about the chair:

“What do you get when you roll up 250 m2 of recycled exhibition carpet? The idea and the solution are as evident as our presence here at the fair. There is nothing to add to it”.

The Rrround seat is made out of approximately 250 square metres of discarded exhibition carpet, all rolled together into an armchair. (Measurements height 950mm, width 1000mm, depth 1300mm)

For the prototype we used scrap pieces of exhibiton carpet from a local importer Kukila Oy in Finland. The look of the armchair can be altered by using carpets of different colours.

Our main idea is to use recycled exhibiton carpet, because it is normally discarded after one use. We are now looking into ways of manufacturing it for a short-run production.

Daily Obsesh – Forever 21 Mini Handbag

imageWhen you go out to a party or need your hands free for the evening, the perfect bag is something small, cute, and easy to sling over your shoulder. But, sometimes finding that perfect bag may take some time. Stop looking, stop searching high and low and take a look at Forever 21’s Adorable Mini Handbag! Sometimes it’s just not an option to spend large chunks of money on a designer bag, and that’s why Forever 21 steps in and makes affordable bags for ladies with great fashion sense. This bag is a great balance of rocker chic and feminine fun. I adore the heart locket closure on the front and I’m also a huge fan of the part leather, part chain strap. This bag is a fun combination of accents without going overboard in any one direction. Isn’t it also great to have the option of adjusting the length of the strap? Whatever style you’re looking to rock, this bag will be your sexy sidekick!

Studio Gorm’s Flow kitchen

pAs a raw-loft-liver I’m very interested in “kitchen stations,” or furniture that can be inserted into empty spaces to serve as kitchens where there are no built-ins. /p

pNetherlands-based design firm Studio Gorm’s A HREF=”http://www.studiogorm.com/flow2.html” Flow/A is a perfect example. It features brilliant touches like a cutting board that slides forward to provide a cavity to dump food waste into the compost bin below; a place to hang your grocery bag when you first come home from shopping so you can unload directly; a dish rack positioned above potted plants and herbs, so the run-off water doesn’t go to waste, but gives the plants life instead./p

Takashi Murakami to Receive the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon Treatment

0908murabal.jpg

The French might not like Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami (well, at least a very vocal portion of them don’t), but we Americans apparently like him so much that we’re giving him a spot in arguably our most famous national parade. The NY Times reports that the organizers of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade have commissioned Murakami to turn two of his creatures, Kaikai and Kiki, into massive balloons for this year’s event. This now puts the artist in the rarified club of other artists who have previously seen their work in balloon form, including Jeff Koons and Keith Haring. Here’s a bit:

Kaikai, a childlike character in a rabbit costume, and Kiki, a companion with three eyes and sharp fangs, are examples of Mr. Murakami’s signature superflat style, but their balloon likenesses will be about 40 feet long when completed, and about three stories tall when filled with helium. Since the spring, Macy’s parade studio and Mr. Murakami and his Tokyo-based team have traded notes on two-dimensional sketches that were used to create clay models, which were then further refined and colored before the fabrication of the balloons (now underway).
