Fashion Week: NYC Celebrities and Fashion

imageBrought to you by our friends from What2WearWhere.com!

I pledge the allegiance to the flag €¦ of fashion. In honor of 2010 New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week W2WW decided to pick 3 native NYC fashion icons, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chloe Sevigny and Lady Gaga, and dress them in 3 NYC designers: Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang.

Gwyneth PaltrowMichael Kors

Actress, singer, chef, blogger, wife, mother-of-two and the totally classically cool Gwyneth Paltrow knows exactly what flatters her figure and which fashion to wear. We figured we would dress this renaissance women in her old friend and designer duds- Michael Kors, after all he did design Gwen’s gown for the 2010 CFDA awards. No one can go wrong with a trench and Kors created the perfect one for fall- with a positively great price point, meaning your name doesn’t have to be Paltrow to afford! We thought Gwyneth would look striking yet elegant in this Michael Kors Trompe sheath dress- leaving just the right amount to the eye. Pair this contemporary Audrey-esque LBD with a classic leather wrap-around watch, pumps, sunglasses and tote and you€™re ready for any city street from London to Lincoln Center in NYC.

Chloe SevignyProenza Schouler

The talented and chic actress, Chloe Sevingy, is always keeping the fashion world on their toes. She is not afraid to push the limit yet always does so in a unique and effortlessly elegant manner. As a fashion icon and muse to the dynamic designing duo, Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough we thought there was no better label than Proenza Schouler to dress Miss Sevingy. This multi-color tweed dress is a great transition piece and can easily take Chloe from the tents to a night on the town. Top off your look with a blazer- which is a great buy for the early-autumn as can also be worn as outer-wear in the soon-to-come chilly weeks, W2WW loves the patterned accents on the lining that can be shown by simply turning up your cuffs. The PS Pouchette- is the must-have-fall-bag and can be seen toting around w Chloe clad in these awesome lace-up PS booties. We thought her outfit needed a little pop and went straight NYC-located jewelry designer Tom Binns. What better way to make an outfit unique than by adding a little Binn-designed Swarovski!

Lady GagaAlexander Wang

We were slightly shocked by singer, Lady Gaga’s choice to don a raw-meat bikini on the upcoming cover of Japanese Men€™s Vogue€¦ Why not shock your fans in a friendlier-fashion with Alexander Wang?! This sequin-leather bra dress channels Gaga’s embrace of Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour yet in a totally wearable way. Cut the autumn chill with Wang€™s cropped leather jacket and get freaky on your feet with Wang’s goat-hair booties. Top off the look with some oversized-velvet-shades to hide from the Papa-papa-razzi and rock some Erickson Beamon jewels to keep the flashes popping. Don’t forget to show (them) your teeth.

A House Awaiting Death by EASTERN Design Office

A House Awaiting Death by Eastern Design Office

This house on the outskirts of Ise, Japan is by architects EASTERN design office and has been raised on a concrete block to afford views of the sea.

A House Awaiting Death by Eastern Design Office

A House Awaiting Death is a concrete construction and sits 8.6 metres above sea level, looking east over a breakwater.

The facade is is punctuated by a row of irregularly shaped windows, positioned higher or lower in the wall depending on where the client intends to sit and stand.

The interior has wooden floors and ceilings, and is divided by a V-shaped partition.

The internal walls are punctuated by slits that line up with external windows.

Here’s some more from the architect:

“A house awaiting death,” the client said to us.

“I will die in 15 years. It will be a house awaiting that death. The building is fine as long as it lasts 15 years. Something small would be good.”

“I have found the place.” A patch of land on a peninsula facing East. “I’m glad the land faces East. I hate the sunset.”

A House Awaiting Death by Eastern Design Office

“When I die it won’t be sunset, it will be sunrise. When the final moment comes, I will face the sea and depart on a ship flashing towards death. It’ll be a time revealed after death.”

This is what the client ordered for his house. A view of the magnificent sea in the east where the sun rises.

A House Awaiting Death by Eastern Design Office

This is the land he chose to live out his final years. The portion of the sea we have captured encompasses the peninsula that appears on both sides of the site.

A four-meter wide gravel and dirt road runs in front of the site. On the other side of the road is a park-golf course where several elderly neighbors enjoy their leisure time.

There is a seashore behind the breakwater wall. If this were a standard house the sea would barely be visible from the site.

The ebb and flow of the tide changes with the seasons and the time, but the distance from the site to the waves is generally about 150 meters.

The height of the floor is nearly 8.6 meters from the horizon and was chosen as the perfect height to view the waves from a sitting position.

The client said to us, “The floor of this house must be raised, so you are the right architects to design such a house.”

The coastline where the site is located is beyond the scope of this round map. This round map encompasses the area of our activity in Japan.

This project takes us to a beach beyond sublime Suzuka mountain range, yonder past the ravines of the Ise Penninsula, and exceeds the boundaries of this circle!

Early morning light streams through polygonal windows. With the overlapping windows and accumulation of light and shadow, the entire building erupts in a hymn to the morning.

Obey Awareness

Shepard Fairey teams up with Surfrider to promote coastal preservation
Obey_1.jpg

To celebrate their 25th year working in coastal conservation, The Surfrider Foundation selected Shepard Fairey as one of 25 artists commissioned to illustrate the world’s most notorious surf breaks through art pieces. Working with photographer Tom Servais, the two produced a fine art illustration of the Jaws wave, a big wave break found in Maui, HI. Appropriately nicknamed, waves can reach heights up to120 feet with speeds as fast as 30mph.

Obey_2.jpg

While the original artwork was auctioned during Surfrider’s Art for the Ocean Anniversary Gala, you can still donate to the Surfrider Foundation through the Obey Awareness program, an effort created by Obey to promote the Surfrider Foundation’s efforts towards coastal preservation. Obey Awareness will also carry Shepard’s “Jaws” t-shirt, featuring the wave illustration on 100% organic cotton. All proceeds will go directly to the Surfrider Foundation.

Available in black, white and grey, the tee sells for $32-$35 on the Obey site.

Hulger launches The Plumen 001: The World’s First Designer Low-Energy Light Bulb

pimg src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/09/plumen001_01.jpg” width=”468″ height=”600″ alt=”plumen001_01.jpg”//p

pAlmost three years ago to the day, I was at the Designersblock exhibition in London’s East End covering the Design Festival for Core when I clocked Nicholas Roope navigating his way through the crowded room with a step ladder to casually install a last minute a href=”http://www.core77.com/gallery/london-design-festival-2007/188.asp”prototype/a of the very first Plumen Bulb. After several more prototypes and iterations, it’s great to see Hulger’s a href=”http://plumen.com/”Plumen Light Bulb/a launch today!/p

pAt first take, this might seem like a radical departure from the retro inspired mobile and skype handsets Hulger launched in 2005, but the Plumen bulb embodies the same playful subversive spirit, it’s just a little more grown up and serious in nature.br /
