The Walkmen x Etsy

Indie rock meets indie design to celebrate a new album

For their new album Lisbon, Brooklyn band The Walkmen wrote several songs during their many visits to the Portuguese capital. But when it came time to think about merch, the group looked a little closer to home,
tapping the DIY experts at Etsy
. The upshot—t-shirts, limited-edition silkscreened inserts, and a hand silk-screened album poster—connects the indie music world with indie design…and Portugal.

Pittsburgh artist Andy Scott of Little Tired hand-silkscreened a three-color poster that features designs inspired by decorative Portuguese tiles. After learning that Portugal produces half of the world’s cork, t-shirt label Sheepshead designed a graphic of a circular cork cell floating over the band’s name, which they printed on Alternative Apparel shirts.

The hardcover digipack CD includes an autographed Yusuf Sevincli-designed 7″, which has “Weight On My Shoulders” on one side and “Good Days Carry On” on the other. Each record comes with a Beau Ideal Editions limited-edition silkscreen based on the patterned pavement at the Cais Sodré port and train station in Lisbon.

For the new Walkmen release, frontman Hamilton Leithauser promises, “a bunch of fast rockers and big bashers, and a couple great oddballs.” Recorded in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, the 11 songs on the album were picked from 29 that they came up with since their critically-acclaimed 2008 album You & Me.

Lisbon drops today on Fat Possum Records and on 11 October 2010 in the U.K. on Bella Union Records. Order it from Amazon or iTunes.

Scher’s school project

A pair of huge typographic murals by Pentagram‘s Paula Scher form the centrepiece of two new schools in Queens, New York

Scher has been working for some time on a series of large-scale map paintings and prints. Under the auspices of New York’s Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art programme, which funds artists to create permanent public artworks in municipal buildings and spaces, Scher was commissioned to create the murals for the two schools of the Queens Metropolitan Campus in the city’s Forest Hills area.

Each mural covers approximately 2,430 square feet. The first, shown here, is a map of the New York metropolitan region.

Scher originally painted the map at an eight feet by six feet scale in three pieces. To enlarge the image for the mural, Scher worked with Michael Imlay, a painter based in Brooklyn.

At his studio, Imlay and his team projected the painting onto a series of panels and repainted the enlarged image. The finished mural consists of over 100 of these panels, some in odd sizes to fit into the atrium’s corners and around its windows and other fixtures.

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
SEPTEMBER 18 – 26, 2010

For this year’s Festival, Italian design company SKITSCH’s recently-opened London showroom in will collaborate with New York-based designer Harry Allen and online architecture and design magazine Dezeen on two exciting projects.

Skitsch at London Design Festival

Design becomes HOME

To celebrate the launch of SKITSCH’s new collections, designer Harry Allen has created a special installation of HOME, a new innovative and quirky modular storage system, which will be displayed in the shop window.

For this storage system, Allen borrowed the archetypical shape of a house. Childlike and iconic in its simplicity, HOME explores the idea of home, both in form and function.

The play on scale is pure fantasy, and the architectural language provides some very practical storage opportunities. HOME’s rooms, attic and yard become places to store and display objects. The systematic storage units are capable of imitating buildings large and small so one can create a unique habitat for one’s belongings, deconstructing and rearranging it in many useful ways.

HOME can be assembled and arranged to fit whatever the purchaser’s idea of home is. Whether that’s an urban skyscraper or a country cottage is completely up to them.

Dezeen pop-up watch store

Internationally acclaimed online design and architecture magazine Dezeen (www.dezeen.com) will launch its first ever online store this September to coincide with the London Design Festival.

Dezeen Watch Store (www.dezeenwatchstore.com) will specialise in unique, design-led watches and will allow design-savvy consumers to buy some of the coolest watches on the market, by some of the world’s coolest designers.

To mark the launch of Dezeen Watch Store, a special pop-up installation will be set up within the Skitsch showroom during the Festival, giving visitors the chance to see and buy the watches first hand.

The launch range will feature collections by global talents including internationally renowned British designers Michael Young and Jasper Morrison, super-cool Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, as well as pieces by boutique brands including Hong Kong’s VOID and London’s cult watchmaker Mr Jones.

Marcus Fairs, editor-in-chief of Dezeen, said: “Stories about watches are among the most popular on dezeen, yet the watches we write about are hard to find. The founding principle behind our first ever retail venture was therefore to meet this explosion in interest and provide design aficionados with eye-catching watches by some of the world’s coolest designers.”

Dezeen Watch Store will gradually add new designs to its collections, aiming to become the leading global website for the fast-growing designer watch market.
