Product news: this ping pong table by Barcelona studio Antoni Pallejà Office has been pared down to look at home in a domestic interior (+ movie).
Shunning the usual blue surface and black metal supports found on a standard table tennis setup, Antoni Pallejà Office paired a white top with wooden legs so the Bola Service Table wouldn’t look out of place in a home.
“This table conveys the warmth required of a piece for the home but without losing the sporty look,” said the designers.
The net is made from a fine mesh and has white edging on the top and sides, with a pink line along the bottom.
Iroko wood legs slot into a steel frame at angles, supporting the playing surface that is marked lengthways down its centre with a thin black line to distinguish service areas.
Paddles, balls and the net can be tucked into a hidden pocket denoted by a pink strip under this surface when not in use, so the table can be used for other purposes.
Produced by design brand RS Barcelona, the table can be used both indoors and outdoors.

London Design Festival 2013: the restaurateurs behind east London restaurant Les Trois Garçons have launched a furniture collection in collaboration with Portuguese manufacturer De Pau (+ slideshow).
The collection marks the launch of L3G Designs, an interior design firm led by Hassan Abdullah, Michel Lasserre and James Gold, co-owners of Les Trois Garçons and London bar LoungeLover.
The first collection, called DP pour Les Trois Garçons, launched last week during London Design Festival and comprises twelve pieces including side tables, coffee tables, shelves, sideboards and seating.
Speaking to Dezeen at the launch event, creative director Abdullah said that the collection was designed to fit in different environments. “Having the possibility to change the shape and look of the items also maximises the appeal and the practicality of the items,” he told Dezeen. “For instance the coffee table made of two triangles could be reconfigured from a square coffee table to suit a rectangular space.”
Abdullah further explained that customers can custom-select materials, colours and sizes for each product. “For L3G Designs, we think it is very important that clients can order the products to their own requirements without the price of bespoke furniture,” he said. “Not everyone has the same colour scheme or preference for the type of wood, marble and metals.”
One side table has two brass-clad drawers stacked on top of one another. “It pivots for ease of use and it is also stackable to create a chest or a tallboy,” explained the designers.
A second table features three stacked units of brass, marble and oak, which gradually increase in size towards the top.
A third cube-shaped side table has contrasting colours and retractable sliding trays on all four sides.
A multileveled coffee table made in solid oak has square inserts available in glass, mirror or marble.
A series of interlocking tables with coloured edges and of varying heights form a second coffee table design. “The taller one can be used for TV dinners or playing games,” explained the designers. “The configuration of the tables can be changed to create an ever-changing look.”
A modular shelving unit made from solid oak has compartments that can be moved and fixed at varying heights.
A second shelving system has a solid oak frame and coloured drawers and cabinets that can be positioned in different places.
The collection also includes an oak framed sideboard with coloured drawers and doors, available with brass or wooden feet and door handles.
Les Trois Garçons is delighted to present its debut furniture collection. Designed in collaboration with DP [De Pau], the collection is a fusion of meticulous design, natural materials and traditional skills.
The grace and simplicity of this range combines the refinement and elegance that has brought Les Trois Garcons international acclaim with the uncompromising quality of DP, a family-owned business that has been making furniture in Portugal for three generations.
The simple lines and natural materials make for a collection to suit any home. Comfort and convenience are the hallmarks of the collection; all the furniture comes in a variety of finishes to suit your taste, and many of the items are customisable.
The range will be available for sale on our website and at a handpicked selection of the world’s finest retailers.

London Design Festival 2013:Amsterdam designer Roel Huisman has created a desk with an ash lamp and glass vase embedded in a thick slab of resin.
Writing Table by Roel Huisman is the first in a new series of polyester resin tables by the designer.
It features ash legs, an aqua-coloured resin table top, an inset glass vase, a desk lamp and a small storage compartment that is concealed by a sliding ash writing surface.
Huisman added coloured pigment to a transparent polyster resin to achieve the desired pastel tone. The material was then cast, milled, sanded and polished.
“I like to combine the polyester with wood, a natural combination since the resin was developed for the naval industry,” said the designer.
Two ash poles make up a pivoting desk lamp, which is connected to a power source by a bright green cable.
The experiences I have had in designing for theatre performances and living in an interior I designed myself have made me become more and more interested in the interaction between the objects that I design and it’s users. The pieces I design are meant to easily blend into your interior to form a pleasant everyday encounter.
This writing table is the first of a series of tables in polyester resin and a continuation of the Shelves series. Polyester resin is used for its amiable appearance. The resin that is used has a base that is transparent and non-coloured. With pigments we achieve the desired colour and opaque quality. The piece undergoes a series of steps in which it is casted, milled, sanded and polished.
I like to combine the polyester with wood, a natural combination since the resin was developed for the naval industry.
I use ash-wood to accessorise the tabletop with several functional elements; a lamp, a vase and a small storage compartment to become an object you will enjoy for it’s humble aesthetics and elegant functionality.
London Design Festival 2013: London designer Benjamin Hubert claims to have created the world’s lightest timber table and is showing it off at the Aram Gallery in London this week (+ movie).
Benjamin Hubert worked with Canadian manufacturer Corelam to develop the table, which is 2.5 metres long, one metre wide and weighs just nine kilograms.
The structure was made by corrugating three layers of 0.8 millimetre-thick birch aircraft plywood. The edge of the table is just 3.5 millimetres thick.
The corrugated wooden structure is covered with a plain sheet to give a flat top, while the A-frame legs are made from a sandwich of two corrugated layers.
“Made using 70-80 percent less material than a standard timber table, Ripple can be assembled and manoeuvred by a single person,” Hubert said.
Ripple will be launched at the Aram Store in London’s Covent Garden as part of a solo exhibition of Hubert’s work taking place during the London Design Festival.
Benjamin Hubert has designed the world’s lightest timber table as part of an internal studio research project into lightweight constructions. The table, titled Ripple, is 2.5 metres long, 1 metre wide, and weighs just 9 kilograms. Made using 70-80% less material than a standard timber table, Ripple can be assembled and manoeuvred by a single person.
The table’s impressive strength to weight ratio is enabled by an innovative production process of corrugating plywood for furniture through pressure lamination, which was developed by Benjamin Hubert with Canadian manufacturer Corelam.
Ripple is made entirely from 3 ply 0.8mm birch aircraft plywood, a timber sourced only in Canada, where the table is manufactured. The material is the same as that used in construction of the Hughes H-4 Hercules – popularly known as the “Spruce Goose” – the world’s largest all timber airplane. The strength of the material in combination with the unique lamination process means the edge of Ripple measures just 3.5mm.
Ripple is minimal in its design language, employing a simple knockdown construction. The top surface is corrugated plywood overlaid by a flat sheet, and the A-frame legs are a sandwich construction of two corrugated plywood layers.
Ripple will be launched at Aram Store during London Design Festival in September as part of Benjamin Hubert’s inaugural UK solo exhibition, Antecedents. It will be available to buy from September on commission through Benjamin Hubert.

Here’s some more details from Formica:
Formica Eames Wire Base Low Table
In the late 1940s, Charles Eames noted all the “fantastic things being made of wire.” That fascination led Charles and Ray Eames to develop a mass-production technique for simultaneously welding wire rods. One result was the Wire-Base Table, which was introduced in 1951. The Eames Wire Base Low Table (1950/2012) is remarkable for the elegance it achieves using simple, practical materials. The table is just 10″ high and it provides a handy surface for a stack of books or a place to rest a drink.
Formica Group is proud to present a limited edition of the Eames tables topped with Formica Laminate Anniversary Collection. The collection features 12 new patterns that reflect the Formica brand and its history giving a fresh look to its iconic design. The Anniversary Laminate tables are limited edition and only 227 have been made worldwide. The tables are designed and produced by Herman Miller.
The Formica Forever book
Formica Group, the inventor of laminate, celebrates 100 years of global design with Formica Forever, a commemorative book that captures the company’s 100-year evolution through cultural shifts, economic uncertainties, trend exploration and global growth. Formica Forever presents the story of how luck and ingenuity, colour and pattern, and design and manufacturing contributed to make Formica brand laminate a truly global brand.
The book includes a series of essays with the focus on different aspects of the story; Phil Patton writes about Formica Group’s Global Business Expansion, Alexander Langer talks about Formica Group’s design legacy and Peter York looks at the cultural impact Formica Group has had during its 100 years. Designed by Abbott Miller, a partner in the renowned international design consultancy Pentagram, the book contains more than 400 images and is modelled after a Formica brand laminate swatch book from the 1960s.
The book can be purchased worldwide from bookstores and also online.

Product news: Australian designers Nicholas Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson have added dining and coffee tables to their range of timber stools with metal collars at the tops of their legs.
The duo own Sydney design company DesignByThem and created the different sized Partridge tables and stools from solid white ash timber coated with a natural wax finish.
They can be self assembled with aluminium brackets that sit neatly against the legs and underside of the seat or table top.
“Our aim with the Partridge tables is to create simple balanced forms that will endure physically and aesthetically,” said Karlovasitis. “We feel that using a warm and tactile material is comforting and allows us to achieve this.”
