Table and pouffe hybrid designed by GamFratesi for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2014: Denmark design duo GamFratesi has combined a coffee table and pouffe to create footstools with integrated trays for French brand Ligne Roset (+ slideshow).

Trouf, a cross between a tray and a pouffe, was designed by GamFratesi with both hard and soft surfaces as a multi-functional piece of furniture.

“We wanted to join different functions just combining soft and hard surfaces, and create furniture where the different objects or moods find their place informally,” Enrico Fratesi told Dezeen.

Wooden trays for holding food or drinks are set into the upholstered tops, offset so a fabric section at one end can be used for laptops, books or resting feet.

Rounded edges were designed so sharp corners wouldn’t cause any issues when walking past. “It seemed correct to have a rounded shape,” said Fratesi. “Since the position of the furniture is in front of a sofa or a lounge chair, we wanted to facilitate the passage between sitting and pouf – avoiding any kind of angle and the rigid part.”

A palette of pastel colours was chosen for the fabric coverings, though these can be customised to match or stand out against the users’ existing furniture.

“The colours that we have selected for these models are soft and nearly muted, but in fact the pouf can be upholstered with very different fabrics and colours so that can be in combination or contrast with the seat in front,” Fratesi explained.

The surfaces are slightly raised on small white wooden legs. The trays are available in natural oak or stained the colour of anthracite, and can be removed along with the upholstery for cleaning.

Trouf is on display at Ligne Roset‘s stand located in Hall 11.3 at imm cologne until Sunday. It will also be shown at Maison&Objet outside Paris from 24 to 28 January.

“We have a vision to create furniture [designs] that are simple, honest and quality conscious and follow them all the way from the drawing board to the finished product,” explained the designers.

“We are convinced that people feel most comfortable if they are among good and honest intentions, and this philosophy forms the basis for Herman Cph,” the designers added. “Great materials are moulded over time, which means that they only grow more beautiful and unique as the years progress.”

The Frisbee tables by Herman Cph combine powder-coated steel legs with oiled or black stained round oak surfaces.

Available in three different heights, the configuration of the table legs is intended to leave maximum room for manoeuvre below the surface.

The tables are delivered flat-packed and can be assembled by the customer using a single screw to join the metal legs.

“In the morning you can work on it solitarily, then use if for lunch with your colleagues, or have a meeting of up to ten people, followed by a game of table tennis,” said Hutten.

“Our work is a big part of our lives and a part of who we are,” he continued. “Due to the digitalisation of society, we are always ‘on’, so it is important to take a break and have fun. Design is traditionally about solving problems. I don’t solve problems, I create possibilities.”

He explained that the product is good for body and mind because it encourages play and activity during the day. “A game of table tennis clears the mind, which eventually leads to increased productivity,” he said.

The table is made of beech and features a walnut inlay to mark out the field for table tennis, but also divides the surface into four workspaces.

The pared-back design is meant to make it suitable for residential or industrial environments. It’s made by craftsmen in the Netherlands and measures 240 by 120 centimetres.

Prototype Liquid Glacial Table by Zaha Hadid at David Gill Galleries

An updated version of Zaha Hadid‘s Liquid Glacial Table is currently on show at David Gill Galleries in London.

Prototype Liquid Glacial Table by Zaha Hadid

Hadid‘s design features a fluid decoration embedded in the acrylic and plexiglass form, which appears as ripples that seem to drain into the legs.

Prototype Liquid Glacial Table by Zaha Hadid

First shown in May 2012, the original Liquid Glacial Tables comprised a coffee table and a dining table made from two sections that fit together. The latest version is 260cm long, 160cm wide and 74.5cm tall and has four legs.

“I have always been interested in the concept of fluidity,” said Hadid. “Using all the advances in design, material and construction technologies, we are now able to achieve even greater results in the work.”

For the first two weeks of the exhibition, which runs until 16 November, David Gill Galleries will present models of a superyacht recently designed by Hadid for German shipbuilders Blohm+Voss alongside the table.

Hadid’s other recent projects include a curvaceous wine bottle for an Australian winemaker, a Library and Learning Centre at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, and a shoe boutique in Milan.

Here’s some more information from David Gill Galleries:

Zaha Hadid presents Prototype Liquid Glacial Table at David Gill St James’s, October 2013

David Gill is delighted to present the next evolution of Zaha Hadid’s series of Liquid Glacial tables. The latest version, entitled, Prototype Liquid Glacial table, will be unveiled at David Gill Galleries, St James’s, on October 15 2013 and the show will run until 16 November.

The Prototype Liquid Glacial table is dramatically visual – the flat table top appears transformed by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface which seem to pour into an intense vortex that forms the table legs. Like the previous Liquid Glacial tables this new table is milled and hand polished to create an exquisite finish. The design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a fluid dynamic.

When it was launched in May 2012, the Liquid Glacial collection was acclaimed by collectors and press alike and the table was shortlisted by the Design Museum as one of the ‘Best Designs of 2012’.

“I have always been interested in the concept of fluidity,” says Hadid. “Using all the advances in design, material and construction technologies, we are now able to achieve even greater results in the work.”

For the first two weeks of the exhibition, a scale model of a ‘super yacht’ designed by Zaha Hadid for yacht builders Blohm and Voss will be on show. Zaha Hadid’s fluid design language has not been applied in the world of yacht design before and the manufacturers are presenting an entirely new concept to potential yacht owners.

A-Joint Table by Henry Wilson for Very Good & Proper

Product news: British furniture brand Very Good & Proper has started producing this table by Australian designer Henry Wilson, which incorporates his trademark A-Joint.

A-Joint Table by Very Good and Proper

Henry Wilson designed the A-Joint as a system for joining various standard cuts of timber.

The joint consists of a metal body and wedge that fix pairs of legs in an A shape. Horizontal braces beneath the table surface are then screwed into the top of the metal piece, locking all the elements together.

Very Good & Proper is now producing the A-Joint Table in the UK. It is available in lengths from 1.5 to three metres in oak, ash or sapele wood, plus others on request.
