Street Style – Vintage Appeal

imageVintage pieces and an overall vintage look has been all the rage these last few seasons. And while we love the romantically nonchalant look, what exactly makes a piece vintage and not just ‘used’?

Wearing a vintage or vintage inspired look is all about showing your individual style, but here are a few quick tips and must-have pieces to get the vintage look just right! Then click the slideshow to see some of our fave vintage and vintage-inspired pieces!

Get The Era Right – Think of style details from the 1920’s to 1970’s. That neon spandex with the exaggerated shoulders? Very 80’s, but not so vintage. Look for muted tones, knee-grazing lengths and soft cotton fabrics. Lace detailing and filigree designs are also the epitome of vintage style.

The Dress/ Skirt – Styles can vary greatly, but a few key details give this piece a decidedly vintage vibe. Look for lace or lace detailing, soft floral patterns and a cotton fabric. Covered buttons and a knee length hem or high-waist cut add to the vintage appeal. Pair with a worn leather belt or knit knee-highs!

The Vintage Shoe – Whether it’s a heel or a flat, a good vintage shoe is usually make of quality leather. A neutral and versatile color like brown, black or cream are safe bets, while red and deep violets are also a good way to show vintage style. An oxford or mary-jane design, laces and grommet details add to the vintage look. For heels, look for something no more than 3 inches high and with a chunkier heel!

Keeping Warm – Good vintage outerwear can range anything from a classic wool coat to a structured blazer style. Look for timeless cuts and silhouettes that will still be in style for years to come. A knee length trench is extremely luxe, while a hem height that hits at the hips is perfect for any style! Opt for black, cream or neutral tones, or if you’re looking to pack a punch, try a saturated jewel tone!

Vintage Add-Ons – Worn leather satchels and hobos make the perfect vintage bag! Knee socks, braided belts, leather driving gloves and panama hats also make great style points. And a silk scarf is every vintage loving gals’ best friend! Use it as a head wrap, a hair ribbon, or tie it loosely around your neck for instant vintage cred!

Accessorize It – Vintage and vintage inspired jewelry is distinct. Look for tarnished brass, ornate details, creamy stones like opal, jade and ivory-like pieces, as well as fun animal shapes like cats, owls and other birds. Victorian style cameo brooches and strings of pearls are always a great vintage choice!

What Your Eyebrow Shape Says About You!

imageWhile it’s often said that brows frame the face, the shape of your eyebrows can also communicate personality characteristics that other people perceive, says an expert.

‘Brows say so much about who you are without even uttering a word,’ says DeeDee Marcelli, celebrity makeup artist to the Chella Skin Care brand.

With this in mind, Marcelli created brow stencils in the four shapes that women most gravitate toward – and as inspired by Old Hollywood glamour icons who vaulted into the public conscience the importance of a neatly groomed brow.

You may find your own shape among this grouping, or perhaps a template that inspires you!

Alluring – ‘This brow draws you in. Beautifully sculpted, well proportioned and perfect in every way. This template reminds me of the Sophia Loren look – a bit exotic and a bit mysterious,’ says Marcelli. The fullness of this brow would be nicely balanced by an equally sexy nude or soft pink lipcolor.

Sassy – ‘To me, this brow shape is reminiscent of Jane Russell; a brow that is thicker in front with a short tail and says, Look at me, I’m unique, not shy, a little edgy and a little outrageous!’ says Marcelli. Sassy brows add a lot of personality to the face, and can be a great complement to bangs.

Here’s a fun and stylish way to spice up these old school kicks with a little glitz and glam in the form of rhinestones. Yup, we said it! Rhinestones are back … and we love them!

Big name design houses like Miu Miu and Christian Louboutin have created similar embellished styles, inspiring us to dig through our old crafts drawer and get our bedazzle on!

Here’s what you’ll need

– Rhinestones (color of your choice – Classic clear looks great with everything, black gems look spectacular against white, black or dark hues or opt for a fun color for a truly unique look!)
– E-6000 industrial strength adhesive

– 2 sheets of newspaper
– Your favorite pair of oxfords (we’re adding the pizazz back to an old pair of jazz shoes!)

Step 1 – Crumple the newspaper into two small balls and stuff your shoes.

Step 2 – Using your pencil, mark a dotted pattern where you will glue the crystals.

Step 3 – Add a thin line or small dot of glue and carefully place rhinestones to marked spots

Step 4 – Repeat this step until your oxford shoes are covered in the desired design!

Persons of Interest

A slick Brooklyn barber shop offering services in a humble way
poi1.jpg

In recent years the men’s grooming culture has thankfully evolved, but with steep prices and an equally pretentious atmosphere many salons seem to cater more to the classy gent than the downtown dude. Steve Marks aims to change this with his relaxed Brooklyn barber shop Persons of Interest, an outfit offering solid cuts and sophisticated services but with simplicity at the forefront.

poichair.jpg

Marks first came upon the idea for Persons of Interest when he visited Sal’s, the original barber shop that occupied the space. Remaining unaltered for 27 years, the shop naturally captured the feel and design of a classic 1970s grooming station. Determined to retain that atmosphere, Marks went above and beyond to keep original features such as the classic barber pole, original chairs and the coastal mural on the back wall.

The attention to detail is also reflected in the level of service on offer. Walk in the door and Marks is the first to give you a warm greeting and a beverage (beer included) from the cooler. If the reading material or conversation isn’t peaking your interest you can always browse the classic suitcase filled with old passports and cash, on display in case someone needs to get out of town quick.

The talent with scissors is just as impressive as the space itself; all of the barbers in Marks’ shop are attentive and skilled, with conversation and advice to match. What they offer is very unique for the Carroll Gardens neighborhood—a high quality cut with no frills and a price tag that’s easy on the wallet. The shop got its name because Persons of Interest “sounds vaguely criminal, vaguely sinister” but you won’t find any shady dealings here. The real beauty of the barber shop is that it fills a gap for men who want a really good haircut ($40) without the glitz of a grandiose salon. To check out this slice of 70s, visit the Persons of Interest website where you can see a full list of their services, including beard trims and more.

Lauren Hutton – Fabulous Fashion Fairy Godmother

imageFrom working with Richard Avedon and Diana Vreeland, to starring in Tom Ford’s recent fashion show, longtime uber-model Lauren Hutton has enjoyed one of the fashion industry’s most enduring careers.

‘I became a model to see the world, to make enough money to travel and experience other cultures,’ she explains in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar. ‘I knew I had to get to New York to get to Africa.’

And with a career spanning almost five decades and well into her mid-60s, she posed for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s 2008 lookbook.

‘I think I was 64 at the time and they were 22. I thought that was fantastically hip. I did it, and they paid me in clothes, which is great,’ she notes, showing off the jeans and workmans shirt she’s wearing – both from the Row.

Adds Ashley, ‘She stays true to herself. I think that’s what’s reflected in her photographs,’ says Ashley, to which M-K adds – ‘She took a chance on a brand that no one knew just because she liked it. We think of her as our fairy godmother.’
