DIY – 90’s Calvin Klein Jeans Re-Vamped!

imageWe love our Calvin’s! Remember when Brooke Shields and Kate Moss donned the iconic and sexually explicit jeans that came to represent casual wear? Stylehive does! We went back in time to get inspired and show Hivers how to update their favorite, old school denim looks with this easy DIY project!

Pick up pair high waisted (they’re back in style!), ill-fitting jeans at your local thrift shop and re-work them to look like you walked right off one of Calvin€™s campaign shoots!

What you€™ll need

-Needle
– Pins
– Thread
– High waisted vintage jeans!

Step 1 – Turn your jeans inside out and try them on.

Step 2 – Depending on how baggy they are, pin the outside seam so that you taper them all the way to your ankles.
Tip – Be sure to leave enough room at the bottom to get them on and off.

Step 3 – Repeat on the other leg

Step 4 – On a sewing machine or by hand, take your jeans in by sewing alongside the pins.

Step 5 – When you’re finished, try them on right side out and make sure they fit correctly. You can then cut away the excess material.

GiulianoFujiwara A/W 2011 Accessories

Bold color remixes in an up-and-coming Japanese label’s latest accessories

Underlining Masataka Matsumura’s somber Autumn/Winter 2011 collection for GiulianoFujiwara, an assortment of colorful accessories adds a “rebellious kick” to the line’s sleek styling and distinct minimalism. Leather shoes with wedged rubber soles and artisanal Italian finishing give the collection a slightly punk vibe, while illustrating the brand’s fondness for smooth curves and sharp corners.

Fujiwara11-4.jpg

Matsumura’s knack for experimenting with color (particularly noticeable in his Spring/Summer 2010 collection) affords him the freedom to experiment with bold details. The sunglasses’ hint of visible color completely changes the mood, perfectly outlining the frames’ retro shape for a PowderPuff-meets-steampunk effect. While some will see echos of recent Prada accessories, others might wonder if Miuccia has met her match.

Converse and Marimekko

A playful marriage of Finnish patterns and classic American sneakers
maricon11.jpg

Unveiling a new model, reissue and pitch-perfect collaboration, Converse’s triple-threat announcement today builds on the brand’s commitment to making everyday sportswear with playfully wearable style. For their spring collection, Converse partnered with
Marimekko
, sourcing patterns—the colorful Tarha (1963) and the looping scaly Pikkusuomu (1965) by Annika Rimala and the tiny triangles of the Kirppu (1980) by Maija and Kristina Isola—from the Finnish textile house’s archives.

The work of some of Marimekko’s most iconic designers, the graphics also speak to Marimekko’s modern art influence—as explained in the
mini-documentary
Converse made about the project.

The partnership brings the bold prints to both classic hi and low Chucks (around $80) as well as to two more surprising profiles—Helen ($75), a slightly more feminine Purcell named for Jack Purcell’s wife and reproduced stich-for-stitich, along with the PJ ($75-85), a brand-new look that’s slim and thin-soled, like a classic ’50s sneaker.

Lilian Asterfield

Vintage neckties upcycled into cheeky rosette brooches

“I’m a sucker for odds and ends,” says Boston-based fashion designer Nicole Deponte. So when she inherited a trash bag full of one-of-a-kind vintage neckties in 2009, what started “as a happy accident”—an experiment with a belt—”grew into a ruffled collection of innovative accessories” called Lilian Asterfield.

Among the line’s original scarves, hats and headbands, Deponte’s hand-sewn rosette brooches put a particularly feminine twist on the source material. The exaggerated poof of the accessory reinvents the meaning of a power tie for today’s dandy, looking equally fitting playfully paired with an ’80s suit as it would with a more modern cut. Although Lilian Asterfield launches a new collection each season, the label prides itself on not being season or gender specific.

The brooches retail for around $25, and sells online through Etsy or Nicole’s site directly.

Street Style – Raid Your Closet!

imageTrends come and go, certain cuts and silhouettes fade in and out of style and fashion is constantly changing and being recycled. So while going on a shopping spree for new pieces at the neighborhood Bloomingdale’s is always a fun pastime, one place to check out to help revive your wardrobe is your very own closet!

Our closets seem to accumulate clothes throughout the years and many of the classic basics are still wearable without looking dated. The trick is to amp up has-been items with modern accessories and trends! Here’s some of our fave basics and tips on new ways to wear them!

The Loose White Tee – While this classic will always look good with a simple pair of jeans, make it modern by pairing it with sleek leggings. Add more edge with details like lace or chunky layered accessories. A pair of killer stilettos add sex appeal.

Classic Trench Coat – Always in style, make this piece more youthful by pairing it with a skirt, dress or shorts that have a shorter hem. Balance it out with some of-the-moment knee highs! Or opt for a form-fitting black ensemble with rocker detailing (think studs and leather) and throw the trench over for a sophisticated touch!

Basic Button Down – A roomy button down is great for work when tucked into a pencil skirt, but wear it on the weekend too! Leave it untucked, or halfway tucked, into trendy denim or a pair of leather(ette)shorts! Industrial-inspired jewelry or other funky accessories, like a headscarf or suspenders, lend even more unique style.

Oversized Cardigan – We all have many of these in our closets, in our drawers or in a pile on the floor. These cozy go-to pieces make great layering pieces for any cool weather look, but make it the center piece by pairing it with simple skinny leg pants or leggings and belting over the cardigan to create a waist and sleeker silhouette. Long chain pendants and chunky rings make great accessory options.

Denim Cut-Off Shorts – Every generation has some variation of the jean cut-off. These days, a shorter style is in. To make it seem less scruffy and casual, try it with opaque tights or knee highs and a pair of chunky heels. A looser fit button down or blouse makes it dreamy and romantic. Or don a fitted cami or v-neck tee and throw on a blazer for more structure and coverage!

Shoe of the Week – Jeffrey Campbell’s Copen Platform

imageIt’s time to dress up the drabness of winter with something bold and bright! Are you currently tired of all the dark, somber clothes in your wardrobe but unsure of how to add some pop while the cold still lingers? We’ve got the answer for you.

Jeffrey Campbell’s Copen Platform in red is a killer lace-up clog in a serious shade of tomato red! Detailed with brass studs and a chunky wooden heel, these shoes will add a dash of dynamite to your whole winter wardrobe.

Hollywood’s Favorite Accessory – Fingerless Gloves

imageOK, here are two awesome things – cashmere anything and fingerless gloves. So you can imagine what happens when you combine the two. Some people wonder why anyone would wear fingerless gloves, but for many situations, they make perfect sense. Versions of the fingerless glove are popular in sports like cycling, sailing, and weight lifting.

The great thing about fingerless gloves is that you get the tactile sensitivity you need for certain tasks (like texting) plus warmth and protection for the rest of the hand (because it’s either cold weather or overly air conditioned). We’ve seen gorgeous cashmere fingerless gloves by vkoo on stars like Emmy Rossum and Sarah Jessica Parker recently in New York. These beautiful fashion accessories are soft, warm, and practical.
