I’m not a fan of the Gap, this didn’t help.

Perhaps the old mark wasn’t the best but I wonder about the motivation for changing it. My best guess is that they were trying to refresh the look and struggled with losing the navy blue square altogether. This thinking, which reeks of design-by-comity, could also explain how they’ve decided to represent the brand online (see below). Overall pretty disappointing, however it’s certainly sparked discussion…

Which brings me to another question. In this gossip-riddled age, twittering our every action and facebooking our every photo, are some designers being tempted to produce work focused on sparking a short term reaction instead of creating an aesthetic with relevance and tact that can stand the test of time? Was this a less-than-inspired attempt to get people talking about a company that’s been falling off the map for years, instead of there existing a real need for a new logo? In either case it seems ill-informed, certainly a reflection of how they’re running things over at the Gap.

The Last Advertising Agency on Earth…

FITC (advocates of the digital realm) has hired traditional ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi Canada to produce a TV ad… I mean a viral campaign to get more advertising professionals to its Toronto conference in late April.

The spot warns ad agencies to change their model and embrace the future of communications or become extinct…

…It’s all very pot calling the kettle black, while shooting oneself in the foot, after biting the hand that feeds you, sprinkled with poor typesetting.

Tropicana Sun

Nicely shot, great track from Patrick Watson and a heart warming concept

… however I would love to know once they finished exploiting our brothers to the north for the ad reel, did Tropicana give more to the community than just a box of artificial orange drink to each household.

Bananas

This is the latest from Del Monte, individually packaged bananas. They’re apparently recyclable, and will eventually be made biodegradable. However, I couldn’t help but notice that bananas already have a compostable wrapper, ie the peel.

The reason for this… longer shelf life. The problem with this… it flies in the face of recent production trends pertaining to the environment. They are claiming that this new product will result in fewer deliveries because of the longer shelf life, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t end up shipping more product to new sectors that they could not previously cater to (ex vending machines). Also, the fact we can recycle the wrapper is of little help because of the footprint that recycling produces, not to mention the extra impact resulting from the production of said wrapper.

A company as big as Del Monte should have come up with a better solution than this.

Graphics Design

A publication that’s been running since 1997, it’s a shame 12 years only got the website this far…

However, the current issue looks great and it’s the only reason I know the mag exists. You could image my surprise while searching for more info about it, only to come across this thing. Hopefully the new print style creeps online sooner than later.

As for the magazine itself, a bit of a heavy read at times (surprise) but really interesting and worth a look if you can find a copy.
