Set expanding shelving by Stephanie Hornig

This expanding shelving unit by Austrian designer Stephanie Hornig can bunch up or stretch out depending on how much space you have.

The Set shelving comprises a beech-wood frame with scissor-like pivots plus folded steel shelves. These sit over rails between each joint and stop the structure stretching any further.

“Strategic cut-outs form shelves that can be fastened on the axes of the flexible structure in order to fix it in position,” said Stephanie Hornig.

She explained how the positions of the notches allow the unit to rest in three different positions and small bookends can be slotted against the diagonals in a similar way.

Other adaptable bookshelves on Dezeen include interlocking shelves that slide out to make space for more books as required – one of our most popular stories ever – and hinged boxes that can be spun round to create a neat grid or a scattered circle.

Here’s some more information from the designer:

Inspired by braided structures I aimed to design objects that could create a two- or threedimensional pattern that is stretchable. The resulting shelving system is based on the principle of a scissors grid with extended axes to make room for shelves.

This creates a superimposed image of diagonals, which is adjustable and can be fixed in three different positions. Bended, powder-coated steel sheets with strategic cut-outs form shelves that can be fastened on the axes of the flexible structure in order to fix it in position.

Additionally, simple bookends can be inserted that lean directly against the wooden struts.

Materials: beech wood, steel

The other kind of corner…

Shelving units that are adapted for the inside of corners are a common and useful storage solution, so why not expand this concept to outward-facing corners for even more space-savings? Designer Kim Hyung Geun answers this very question with his latest piece- a versatile shelving system that makes the most out of both kinds of corners that are just waiting to be used! Easy to mount and easy on the eyes, it’s a simple way to bring more shelving into compact spaces.

ADD System Furniture by Werner Aisslinger for Flötotto

Product news: designer Werner Aisslinger of Berlin and Singapore has created a storage system for German brand Flötotto that’s held together by plastic clips.

The ADD System comprises timber batons joined with plastic connectors hidden on the inside of the frame. Side, front and back panels can then be simply clipped to the plastic components with metal fastenings.

“ADD literally contains a ‘hidden hero’ since the highly complex joint is integrated into the load-bearing wooden elements in such a way that it remains invisible from the outside,” says Aisslinger. “This gives the system an elegant, domestic look.”

Intended for the contract or domestic market, the system can be used to make open and closed shelving units, sideboards and chests of drawers.

The frame is made of bleached oak and the MDF panels come painted in a range of eight colours plus lighter and darker versions.

The product was launched at imm cologne in January, where other products on show included a chair inspired by spaghetti for Ligne Roset and a folding armchair for One Nordic. See all our stories about product launches in Cologne.

Last year Flötotto showed a plastic school chair by Konstantin Grcic, which has been updated this time around with an outdoor version.

Other projects by Werner Aisslinger on Dezeen include a budget hotel designed to feel like staying at a friend’s house, a chair grown inside a greenhouse and a swinging sofa. He’s also the designer behind the Iconograph watch, available from Dezeen Watch Store.

Lift by Staffan Holm for One Nordic

Lift by Staffan Holm for One Nordic

Stockholm 2013: Swedish designer Staffan Holm has created a shelving unit that concertinas flat for Scandinavian brand One Nordic.

Powder-coated steel hinges on three sides slide along rails hidden in the solid ash shelves, so when the top shelf is pulled upward the unit expands then locks into place.

Lift by Staffan Holm for One Nordic

Holm was inspired by extendable scissor-lift trucks to design a piece that can be delivered flat and erected almost immediately rather than assembled with fiddly fixings. The shelving is available in black or white and can be wall-mounted or stood on the floor.

One Nordic was founded last year and primarily sells designer furniture online so their pieces need to collapse for shipping but be easy to assemble. In a recent interview with Dezeen, One Nordic founder and CEO Joel Roos described furniture brands as being “terrible” at selling online – read it here.

Lift was shown at Stockholm Furniture Fair, which concluded on Saturday. Nendo was guest of honour at the fair, where the studio created an installation of laser-cut foam board and launched a chair that looks like it’s wearing a cape.

More shelves we’ve featured recently include an interlocking wooden unit and small, wall-mounted dishes.

L’étagère-en-bois by Lucien Gumy

Cologne 2013: Swiss industrial designer Lucien Gumy has won the [D3] Contest at imm cologne trade fair with his interlocking wooden shelving.

L'étagère-en-bois by Lucien Gumy

L’étagère-en-bois, which means “wood shelves” in English, comprises various lengths of solid wood that can be assembled and taken apart without tools, screws or glue.

The tapered sections of the uprights slot into the small notches cut into the edges of the boards.

Lucien Gumy created the flat-pack shelves while studying at Ecole Cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) in Switzerland.

Gumy took first prize in this year’s [D3] Contest, the award for young designers at imm cologne. The second prize was awarded to the Tilt clothes rack by Tina Schmid, while third prize went to Dennis Parren’s CMYK lamp, which we featured recently.

Brain Training Furniture

The Lean on Me series of furniture by TSCHUS studio (a team of really cute designers I might add!) aims to challenge the user to rethink the way each object is used by forcing them to evaluate each interaction they have with the piece. For example, while most chairs dictate a predetermined direction and seating position, the “12min Stool” pictured here requires the user to make a conscious decision about what direction and what position they will sit. Hit the jump to see a vid on other thought-provoking designs!

The 12min Stool: Inspired by the milking stool which is often strapped to a farmer’s belt, the seat requires the user to decide what position and direction to sit.

HangOver Shelf: Considering that people often switch between reading multiple magazines, the design encourages the user to decide exactly which page to come back to when they’re ready to pick it back up.

2forTango Hanger: This unique clothes hanger was inspired by a scale and forces the user to maintain balance by managing the weight of the items places on either end.
