Buitenbeentje (Dutch for odd man out) is a project that explores the qualities of poly-urethane resin by Anna Ter Haar. Check out the rest of the photos and a cool little time lapse video of the process here.

MLK Memorial

The image above is the proposed sculpture of King by artist Lei Yixin from China. The Memorial will be located on a four-acre site on the National Mall which borders the Tidal Basin. It will be adjacent to the Roosevelt Memorial and was designed to create a visual “line of leadership” from the Lincoln Memorial, where King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington.

46 years after he gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” in Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. is finally being immortalized with his own memorial in our nation’s capitol.

With the historic inauguration of the U.S. first black president coming a day after King would’ve turned 80, if he were still alive, the amount needed to build the memorial has almost been reached.

According to AOL’s BlackVoices.com, more than $100 million has been raised in donations for the construction of the MLK memorial.

The total cost of the memorial is estimated to reach $120 million, so there’s still some financial ground to cover.

Sightings

It’s been a while since I did the last “Sightings.” I like the idea of it and I hope to do more posts like this. What do you think?

Lisa Fedon, Wire Sculptures

Woody Allen Wire Sculpture

I was looking for some wire sculpture examples and found these by Lisa Fedon. Besides the fact that I’m a big fan of Mr. Woody Allen, these sculptures are fantastic. I’m not sure how she achieved the shirt. Looks too delicate for wire mesh.

Louis Agassiz

"Great in the abstract, but not in the concrete"

The statue of Louis Agassiz, fallen from the Zoology building at Stanford after the earthquake in 1906. Someone was quoted in the papers as saying Louis Agassiz “was great in the abstract, but not in the concrete.”

Martin Puryear

Martin Puryear - "Old Mole" 1985

The SFMOMA is running an exhibit of Martin Puryear’s sculptures. With tremendous thanks to Chris and Kate, who got me a museum membership, I’ve visited the exhibit twice already. I really liked every single piece without exception, but I think my favorite was Old Mole (1985) shown above.
