The Virtual Reality Phone is Here

The award winning LG Touch mobile phone concept combines state-of-the-art touch technology with a minimalist aesthetic that challenges the limitations of existing mobile phones. The primary feature is a high-tech polymer membrane touch surface that constantly changes to give the user tactile feedback to what’s displayed on the screen. It allows those with sight impairments to read Braille, or users who are shopping online to literally feel the texture of the material they are looking at. It’s virtual reality put to real world use.

LG Touch is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2012 LG Mobile Design Competition.

Move Over Tablet

Introducing… Wallet! It’s an all-in-one device that functions as phone, camera, and tablet all in one. Incredibly, it’s merely the size of a standard wallet, but features 3 folding screens in a unique construction that allows them to perform multiple tasks at once or even be combined to stream movies or photo slideshows. But HOW?? You’ll have to check out the video after the jump to see just how this incredible multitasking machine works!

The first screen is formed by two sets: a framework that allows the folding of the entire screen, and an inner screen which can perform a rotation of 180 °, which at its rear part includes a 12.1 Mpx camera with 16x digital zoom and video recording at 1080p HD. In addition, a flash light that improves the quality of photos. On one side is a LED that spares the user from having to open Wallet to check if they have received a call, message or any other notifications. Moreover, this screen also includes a microphone and a speaker for calls, so it can be used without opening it. At the top corner of the frame are connectors for standard 3.5mm headphones to avoid burden when it is used as widescreen and next to it is a power button for easy accessibility.

The second screen has a built-in support in the outer casing made of Technogel. Eventhough this material can be easily bendable, it is also strong enough for the support to carry the entire weight of Wallet. The Technogel is an innovative material invented by an Italian company. Among its many properties are resistance to shocks, large durability and high protection. At the top of the screen is a standard micro USB connector type B which serves to connect any peripherals items (mouse, keyboard, printer, and even a TV). Additionally, it can be connected to a computer to recharge. The connecter is located in a spot where it does not interfere when it is used as a tablet or widescreen.

iPhone touchkeys become real

Designer Moon Myounghak has made a lovely effort in a very real way (conceptual on the verge of reality) in creating a case that allows the iPhone to become a touchkey phone. WIth the keys this case creates for the iPhone, you’ve got a very physical set of keys accented by a touchscreen that contains five icons across. In other words, this wouldn’t be allowed by Apple as it stands here, but with a hacked iPhone you’d have gold.

Have a peek at what this physical case with real physical buttons would bring you and your iPhone and let us know – would you do it? Do you desire the physical set of keys of yesteryear to keep the iPhone linked to the past? Or could you never, ever keep away from the full touchscreen experience?

Tron-inspired smartphone hits The Grid

Designer Wooseok Suh is coming on correct today with a lovely smartphone device by the name of “Another World”, made right out of the box to present an entirely new environment for you lovers of the unique. This smart device could be called a smartphone or it could simply be called an electronic touch device – it breaks barriers either way.

Have a peek at how this device not only shows off its abilities in such a simple way that we don’t even have to explain how it works, but also keeps a perfectly clean aesthetic for fashionability as well. The movie Tron comes to mind simply because of the black and transparent grid run through with glowing light lines – otherwise this lovely amalgamation of wonder is all from the mind of Suh.

Muscular Mobile Phone

This peculiar, creature-like mobile phone concept, appropriately named Curious, features a multi-sensory notification system that alerts the user to incoming calls with not only a standard vibration and ring, but also a complete changing of its shape! At rest, the phone lies flat, but upon being activated by a call, the sections begin to flex, offering an additional visual indication and shape that is more ergonomic for holding against the ear. To turn off, simply push the phone against a surface to deactivate it.

Your smartphone needs a baseball cap

If you’ve got a smartphone with a headphone jack on the top and you need a bit more zazz, you really should check out the cuteness in the Line Cap. The folks at SUMNEEDS have brought on the “Line Cap”, part of a series of accessories called “Mobile Device is my friend.” It’s time to play dress-up!

The Line Cap acts both as a lovely little cap for your device and a “line winder.” A line winder is a keeper for your earbuds, winding the line up for safekeeping during the day – rather convenient! Keep your line in the cap, keep your cap on your phone – fun!

Prep your tech for a weather emergency

Earlier this week, many of us here on the Eastern Coast of the USA endured hurricane Sandy’s assault. As a resident of coastal Massachusetts, I spent last weekend preparing for the storm. There’s a lot to be done, and you’ll find an excellent overview from the American Red Cross here. Now that the worst seems to be behind us in my particular neighborhood (I know it’s not this way for all those affected by the storm), I’ll share some simple tips I picked up from this event to ensure that your tech gadgets are ready to go the next time emergency strikes. Getting things organized ahead of time can lessen the stress of dealing with the event itself.

Charge Up

It’s likely that you’ll lose power during a major storm, so charge all of your devices ahead of time. When power does go out, unplug your devices, as it could be restored with a jolt. Also, if you’ve got a generator, it’s best not to run electronics like phones, laptops, and tablets off of it.

Keep it Charged

I live in a small town, so we lost power at the drop of a hat. Once it’s gone, it stays gone. A good backup battery is great to have on hand. iPhone owners should check out the Mophie Juice Pack. It starts at $80 and provides several hours of additional life to your iPhone 4 or 4S (an iPhone 5 version is under development). It’s a case that charges separately from your phone, and features an on/off switch so you needn’t use it until you need it. If that’s not enough, consider the Mophie Powerstation Pro, an external battery that provides even more power to your iPhone.

There are several options for Android phone owners, too, like the Samsung Galaxy S III Power Bank External Battery Case.

You can also extend your phone’s battery life by disabling certain features, like Wi-Fi (your router’s probably out anyway) and Bluetooth. Also, dim the screen brightness and avoid playing audio at a high volume. If your phone is set to check email automatically at regular intervals, turn that off, too. All of those processes drain battery life.

Store Important Documents

If you’re forced to evacuate your home, it’s helpful to have important documents with you, but not always practical. One solution is to store copies in the cloud. Evernote lets you store digital files remotely and access them from nearly any Internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer. Simply scan your documents or take photos of them. Create a new notebook in Evernote (I suggest the name “Emergency Documents”) and add the digital copies.

Find Some Useful Apps

The American Red Cross has released several great apps for both the iPhone and Android devices. For this storm, I installed one called Hurricane App. This free, full-featured app provides tips on preparedness, push alerts for your area and so much more. You’ll even get location-based NOAA weather alerts and can monitor alerts for far away regions of the country where loved ones are. There’s even a flashlight, strobe and alarm included.

iPhone owners who are interested in NOAA weather radio should check out NOAA weather radio app for iPhone. It provides live NOAA weather broadcasts for a huge variety of locations across the USA. A crank radio is best, as there’s no battery to exhaust, but this works if you have power on your phone.

Back It Up

Back up your computers, tablets, and smart phones before the storm hits (you’re doing this anyway, right?). It’s nice to have a backup in your house, but inadequate if that’s all you’ve got. Create remote backups with a service like Crashplan, Dolly Drive or Carbonite.

Go Social

Finally, keep an eye on social media. It’s amazing how significantly these services affect our lives. You can follow The American Red Cross on Twitter for up -to-the-minute information. Also, look for relevant hashtags, like #Sandy.

Of course, the best advice is to follow the instructions of emergency personnel in your area. Be safe, be careful and be prepared. And our thoughts continue to be with those most affected by this horrible storm.

Luxury Android

In a world of cookie-cutter smartphones, the BeoSmart stands out from its counterparts as a truly unique design that hones in on the style and quality of the Bang and Olufsen audio and Leica camera brands. The exterior casing is reminiscent of the Leica M series cam fit with synthetic leather as well as a high powered B&O speaker at the center that serves as the focal point of the design. Finally, an exclusive-feeling Android phone!

The Fly Phone

FlyIdea is an amazing phone that features an alluring interface. I simply love the dongle-earphone that performs a myriad of functions. The dongle essential functions as wireless earphone, and syncs with the phone to work as a camera, gaming sensor, music controller and video recorder. Both the earphone and phone work independently and together. The concept offers an innovative way of using the phone with the added functionality of the earphones dongle.
