Rat reading

My husband Glen Dresser’s first novel, Correction Road, is approaching its second anniversary of publication. Narrated by an omniscient rat, the story follows Walt, Hugh and Joan, three characters drifting from, and towards, one another. The novel explores the real and imagined boundaries between people, landscape and perception.

Back to Old School

This morning I am returning to the Alberta College of Art & Design as an instructor. Every Monday until Christmas, I’ll be teaching a course in which 4th year students research a favourite topic and complete a publication design on the subject from start to finish. It’s basically what I do on a daily basis, so I’m looking forward to the class. (Since I can’t quite be two places at once, the store will be closed on Mondays.)

It has been a year since we presented Old School, the book and exhibition in which the shop was transformed into a classroom. It certainly was a fun show and the book was a success. There are just a few dozen copies left, so get yours while you can! The star is actually one of those metallic teacher stickers that we place by hand on each book. The book comes with an official Old School pencil, too.

To see more of the development of the book and the show, visit my flickr set.

Back to school today

Back to school today at SVA. Who would have thought I would be teaching 11 years now.

Petunia

The illustrations in the previous post reminded me of one of my favourite children’s books, Petunia by Roger Duvoisin (in retrospect, it is not surprising that, as a child, my favourite book was about a book!) Originally published by Knopf in 1950, its sweet illustrations are still fresh and endearing. (You can read the story in Laura Howard‘s flickr stream, although the pages appear to be out of proper order.)

Happy Father’s Day

My parents were in town this weekend, so we took a family outing to Calgary Pick and Pull! I’m pretty sure that I had the most fun of all of us. Too bad Dad didn’t find the part he was looking for.

My Dad’s picks

Here’s a little poster tribute of movies my dad taught me to appreciate.

From Sam Wood‘s screen version of Hemingway‘s war-time novel, For Whom The Bell Tolls (1943) to the comedic geniuses Steve Martin (oh, The Jerk!)

and Bill Murray (remember Caddyshack?).

The scintillating Elizabeth Taylor performing Tennesse Williams‘s tale of southern pathos, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

and many more…  Lucky for me, I still have regular movie nights with my dad (and mom!)

Thank you JS. Happy Day.

Father’s Day Film Fare

A friendly reminder that, in many parts of the world, this Sunday is Father’s day.

I decided to thank my dad (the greatest!) by giving him a Paul Newman-themed dvd collection. So many stellar films to choose from: The Hustler (1961), Slap Shot (1977), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Hud (1963) among them. Paul was one fine man, on and off screen.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Nobody’s Fool is particularly wonderful. A sweet, wry comedy in which Paul stars as Sully, a dashing 60-something curmudgeon who faces family responsibilities late in the game. Click here to watch the trailer.

And happy father’s day to all the dads out there.

Saturday: fun fun fun

colour tv

Wow! I don’t have a television but this commercial is making me think twice.. Love the song (‘Heartbeats‘ performed by Jose Gonzalez) and the colorful bouncy balls. Thanks to Kelsey for bringing it to my attention.
