Architecture with a Bang: Is Author Tom Clancy Trying to Build an Indoor Shooting Range at Baltimore’s Ritz-Carlton Residences?

Speaking of powerful men with lots of money who want things done their way, there’s an interesting architecture development happening in Baltimore, stirring up some rumors in the process. The Baltimore Sun reports that an owner of a penthouse-level condo at the Ritz-Carlton Residences near the city’s waterfront has hired an architect and is seeking permission from the city to build an indoor gun range. No one is sure who wants a portion of their house torn up and spot to fire guns in put up, not even the architect, but most of the rumors point to novelist/licensing-guru Tom Clancy. A known gun enthusiast, who has built ranges at his other properties, owns and entire floor of the tony Baltimore building. Clancy is sure to be up against some big hurdles, and not just from his neighbors who might put up a fight (we also can’t imagine that the association’s bylaws include “No gun ranges may be installed in any property.”) As the Sun reports, “State law prohibits the firing of guns within 150 yards of any residence. Whether that would prevent a permitted gun owner from shooting indoors in a controlled environment such as a firing range is one of the questions being considered by authorities. ” But when you’ve already spent nearly $17 million on buying a whole floor of a building, that likely implies that you don’t mind spending a few more bucks to help grease some wheels.

The Art and Architecture of Saif Gaddafi

While the vicious fighting continues unabated in Libya, The Art Newspaper recalled having reported on a story related to one of the key figures in the battle for the country, Saif Gaddafi, the son and right-hand man of Muammar Gaddafi, who had recently pledged to “fight until the last man, the last woman, the last bullet” and warned protesters that “rivers of blood will run through Libya.” Back in 2002, Gaddafi talked with the paper about his The Desert is Not Silent, a traveling exhibition of his paintings. As you’d likely guessed, the world’s art critics were not very receiving of the dictator’s son’s work. For reference, we point to the Guardian‘s Jonathan Jones, who said, “as a painter he is not even a gifted amateur; his sentimentality is only exceeded by his technical incapacity.” We were surprised to learn also that, prior to the recent fighting in the country, Saif also ran his own architecture firm, the National Engineering Service and Supplies Company, and two years ago had gotten into urban planning, even roping in Norman Foster to help out. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find any of his architectural work online and his multi-billion dollar plan to build “the world’s largest sustainable development” seem largely like delusional hyperbole. So, in short, there’s nothing to show from either of those aspects of his career. What’s more, we can’t even send you over to his painting exhibition’s website, because it’s “down for maintenance” at the moment. However, you can get a small peek and a description of the traveling show on the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation‘s site, which of course, funded the entire thing (must not have hurt that Saif serves as its chairman).

Will Moving Back to the UK Ruin Designer Jonathan Ive’s Career at Apple?

1221ive.jpg

Almost two years ago, Apple‘s design guru Jonathan Ive caught a bit of flak for not commenting about the state of the product design industry in his native UK, something that some read as something of a slight. Now, however, it appears the tables might be turned just a bit. The tech world is abuzz that Ive’s days might be numbered at Apple after the reclusive designer requested that he’d like to spend more time in the UK and enroll their children in school there. The Daily Mail reports from a source that the company has said if Ive moves back to England, he would either no longer work for the company or his high-ranking position would dwindle to a very large degree. Of course, this being Apple, an organization that keeps its secrets far better than most countries across the world, all of this is entirely speculation. What is known, due to the release of public records, is that Ive is soon set to receive a very large chunk the company’s stock, to the tune of $25 million, which has more than doubled from when he was originally given those shares just three years ago. And as Ive regularly ranks fairly highly on lists of the richest of the British, even if he does decide to part ways with Apple, we have a feeling he won’t be hurting too badly. We have a feeling James Dyson would be making a social call around that time, too.

Beyond Notebooks: Moleskine Taps Designer Giulio Iacchetti to Expand Product Line

Giulio Iacchetti’s sketches for new Moleskine-branded products

Moleskine‘s on the move. The cult brand, which last year tested the digital waters with the launch of a Kindle cover/notebook hybrid and last month debuted a collection of notebooks featuring artwork uploaded to its myMoleskine fan site, is expanding beyond elastic-banded journals. Moleskine has tapped industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti to create “new tools for cultural pleasure and mobile living” that range from bags and pens to reading glasses and USB-rechargeable booklights. Consisting of collections dedicated to writing, traveling, and reading, the Moleskine accessories are designed to be compatible—through the use of special clips and holders—with each other as well as with the brand’s signature notebooks. Iacchetti reprises their smooth and rounded corners, black color, and elastic band in the new objects, which will make their first public appearance next month during the Salone del Mobile in Milan and are slated to hit stores worldwide shortly thereafter. In the meantime, take a look at Moleskine’s new collection of notebooks inspired by Le Petit Prince, although we suspect that Antoine de Saint-Exupéry‘s charming protagonist (who had little use for les chiffres) wouldn’t approve of the ruled version.

Tom Ford Gets Sirius (and Vice Versa)

Designer, filmmaker, fragrance magnate, and one-man brand Tom Ford is taking to the airwaves! Sirius XM Radio has selected Ford as the inaugural subject of Iconography, a monthly series that will “honor the life, career, and impact of iconic personalities.” A one-hour, exclusive interview with Ford debuts March 19 on the satellite radio provider’s OutQ channel, but clips will begin airing tomorrow. The conversation with OutQ host Frank DeCaro ranges from Ford’s early inspirations and wildly successful career at Gucci Group to plans for future projects—we hear he’s almost done with the screenplay for a second film project—and his guilty pleasure (Hostess Donettes). Listeners may come away with an understanding of the “real” Tom Ford. “I think most people don’t actually know me,” he told friend and artist John Currin in this month’s issue of Interview. “They know the projection of me that I use to sell things. And they know me from an expression of material beauty. I’m actually very introverted. I’m very shy. I’m very emotional.”

John Galliano Suspended from Dior Amidst Allegations of Racial Slurs

Fresh off a triumphant couture collection inspired by René Gruau and only days before Paris Fashion Week begins, John Galliano has had his world turned upside down by allegations that he made anti-Semitic and racist remarks and assaulted a couple in a Paris cafe. After the Thursday night altercation, the designer was briefly arrested and then escorted home by police, who did not press charges. However, LVMH-owned Christian Dior wasted no time in suspending its longtime creative director. “The House of Dior declares with the greatest firmness its policy of zero tolerance with regard to any antisemitic or racist statement or attitude,” said Dior president and CEO Sidney Toledano in a statement.

The couple involved in the incident filed charges against Galliano, who proceeded to sue them for defamation. Meanwhile, the controversy didn’t deter Galliano devotee Nicole Kidman or Sharon Stone, a face of Dior Beauty (and someone whose own culturally insensitive remarks got her in trouble with the brand a few years back), from wearing Dior gowns on last night’s Oscar red carpet. Neither actress would comment on the situation. Whether Galliano’s fall ready-to-wear collections for Dior or his own label will hit the runway this week remains anyone’s guess, but the plot thickens. Today a second complaint was filed with the Paris police. According to WWD, a woman claims she was verbally attacked by the designer earlier this month at the same Marais cafe, which is near Galliano’s home.

Female AIA Young Architects Winners Weigh in on Architect Barbie

Earlier this week, we reported that after nearly a decade of attempts, there is finally going be an Architect Barbie. While through a wider lens, it isn’t perhaps Barbie Betty Friedan, it’s certainly better than some of the other picks from years past in Mattel‘s annual “I Can Be” competition for the famous doll (we’re looking at you Dolphin Trainer Barbie — not that dolphin training isn’t important or empowering). Judging from the reaction our post received, it appears that many of you agree. Our pals over at Architizer dropped us a line to tell us that they’d passed the news around of the blond bombshell’s new career to female architects, AIA Young Architects prize winners to be specific, to get their opinions on their now-fellow industry peer. The responses were great, and largely uniform in that she’ll probably discover that she needs a new wardrobe once she starts getting out to construction sites. A couple of our favorites: here’s Angie Brooks from BROOKS + SCARPA, who said…

“No make-up, cut her hair short.” She’d also add “boots that will not topple over when one tries to walk over 2x4s or steel beams, clothes that are appropriate for climbing ladders at a job site.” She adds, “And get rid of the pink. Contractors hate pink …. and wearing it is a good way to invite animosity before you even start the job.”

And this one from Jinhee Park from SsD:

“I think she should wear a dress with more structured design or a ‘black turtleneck’ … A pink hard hat would be hot!”

Banksy Denied Entry into Academy Awards

0115banksy.jpg

The saga of “Banksy Meets the Oscars” continues. You might recall that we reported that the Academy Awards producers were concerned that the faceless-yet-famous street artist, whose Exit Through the Gift Shop is a nominee for a Best Documentary award, would show up to redeem his prize wearing a disguise, perhaps his familiar monkey mask, something they weren’t to pleased about. As was reported immediately after, the Academy apparently eventually struck up a deal with the artist that, should his film win, his co-producer, Jamie D’Cruz, would accept the award on behalf of both of them. Now, following a few weeks of Banksy-esque art popping up on Los Angeles streets, possibly to help wage a campaign for the win, it’s come out that the Academy has flat out refused the artist’s entry into the ceremony. The same story prevails, that they do not want a mysterious man in a mask among the crowd, let alone storming the stage. Fortunately for the producers, Banksy seems comfortable in obliging their “stay away!” demands. Here’s what he told the Guardian:

When his nomination was announced, Banksy called it a “big surprise.”

“I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for,” he said, adding: “The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me.”

However, the paper also hints that “reports suggest he will be in the vicinity.” So Joan Rivers, please keep an eye out.

The Art Guys Issue Final Statement Over Morgan Spurlock Suit Controversy

Speaking of copyright/intellectual property issues, our reporting earlier this month on the controversy over director Morgan Spurlock wearing a suit very similar ones worn in the 1990s by The Art Guys, wound up making the internet rounds fairly quickly. Ultimately, Spurlock himself responded, saying he hadn’t heard of the duo before and the accusations that he’d stolen the idea were baseless. The Art Guys don’t believe that that’s entirely accurate, but they’ve decided to drop the issue, no longer wishing to discuss it. They’ve issued their final statement on the matter, which you’ll find in full after the jump. No matter your opinion on the controversy, it’s a great read, particularly in their response to those who claimed they weren’t the first to have the branded-suit idea.

Jasper Johns Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

This afternoon President Obama presented 13 exceptional individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Among them was Jasper Johns, the first studio artist to receive the award since Alexander Calder in 1977. “It has been noted that Jasper Johns’ work, playing off familiar images, has transfixed people around the world,” said Obama at the ceremony, which took place in the East Room of the White House. “Like great artists before him, Jasper Johns pushed the boundaries of what art could be and challenged others to test their own assumptions. He didn’t do it for fame, he didn’t do it for success—although he earned both.” The President studded his biographical sketches of many of the honorees with their own words. In the case of Johns, he included the old chestnut “I’m just trying to find a way to make pictures” and got a laugh out of the artist’s pessimistic resolve. “As [Johns] said, ‘I assumed that everything would lead to complete failure, but I decided that it didn’t matter—that would be my life,’” Obama told the crowd. “We are richer as a society because it was. And Jasper, you’ve turned out fine.” Other recipients of the 2010 Medal of Freedom include former President George H.W. Bush, musician Yo-Yo Ma, author and poet Maya Angelou, and financier Warren Buffett.
