pbyAMT will be presenting two new collections at Salone del Mobile this year at a href=”http://www.meetmyproject.com/”emMeet My Project: Smart Design for Industry/em/a, alongside 15 other designers./p

pemPeasant Collection/em, pictured top, is a furniture series that makes use of familiar shapes arranged just slightly off-kilter. br /
blockquoteThe image of crooked slats in a weathered picket fence originally impelled Alissia Melka-Teichroew to explore the idea of asymmetrical wood pieces supporting each other. She found a similar kind of irregularity and balancing act in the old-fashioned one-legged milk stool. By merging the two concepts she arrived at the Milk Stools, a sturdy but uneven chair propped up by expressive and lopsided legs. The design evolved into a larger Milk Bench with similarly jumbled legs that almost look like they’re moving on their own./p

pOut of these objects grew a whole family of furniture. The All Is Vanity is based on an easelmdash;yet it refers to something much softer and rounder that brings the rituals of dressing up to mind. A leather strap and hardware keep the delicate structure in place. The Skirt Side Table features a variation on the original idea of wooden slats by turning a set of dowels into a fixed “table cloth” that looks like a hoop skirt in motion. The American Beauty Desk Light and the American Beauty Hanging Lamp have a soft and approachable shape but are made out of hard materials like wood and glass. The idea of a balancing act recurs with the wooden ball, which refers to a stabilizing weight, but it’s function is in fact to provide an elegant route for the electrical cord./blockquote/p

pemJointed Jewels/em, above, grows out of project investigating ball joints in 3D printed jewelry, expanding to include new forms, scales and colors (including a metallic gold shade and bright colors). Each piece of jewelry is printed in one gomdash;the ball joints are embedded in each other from the get-go./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/milan10/milan_design_week_2010_byamt_at_meet_my_project__16337.asp”(more…)/a

Milan Design Week 2010 Preview: Chair Garden by Nendo

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/nendo-vases.jpg” width=”468″ height=”352″ alt=”nendo-vases.jpg”//div

pa href=”http://www.nendo.jp/en/profile/”Nendo/a is prolific, and at this year’s Milan Design Week, he’ll be showing nine new pieces for clients like Swarovski, Flaminia, Arketipo, Tectonica, and Boffi. Our favorites are the three self-initiated projects to be shown at emChair Garden/em, Nendo’s private exhibition at Galleria Antonia Jannone./p

pemDress-Up/em, pictured top, is a series of flower vases produced in collaboration with Ceramic Japan, a firm located in Seto, an area known for its ceramics. The three forms make up a family: “a heavyset ‘father,’ a slim ‘mother,’ and a smaller ‘child,'” each with its own distinctive collar. According to Nendo, “when we dress, our hair and clothing correspond to each other,” In this case, the clothing is the vase and the hair is the flower. /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/nendo-comma.jpg” width=”468″ height=”312″ alt=”nendo-comma.jpg”//div

pemPeriod. Comma, “Quote”/em is a set of paperweights made in collaboration with Takada Seisakujo, specialists in cast aluminum. The three weights echo different forms of punctuation to help users sort their papers: “the period for work completed; the comma for work in progress; and the quotation mark for messages.” The forms are not predetermined, but shape up naturally as the aluminum is poured. /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/nendo-peel.jpg” width=”468″ height=”351″ alt=”nendo-peel.jpg”//div

pemPeel/em is a tea mug with a small portion of the lip peeled away, creating a gap beneath the ceramic lid. Through the gap, a spoon handle can rest or a tea bag string can escape. The lid helps keep the tea hot while steeping, and can function as a spoon rest or a dish for sweets. /p

pThis year in Milan, Droog presents a href=”http://www.droog.com/presentationsevents/saved-by-droog-/”emSaved by Droog/em/a, in which 5135 items saved from liquidation sales were presented to 14 designers as raw materials. The result is 19 new products, each available for immediate purchase in editions dictated by the limitations of the liquidation lot./p

pFor example, according to Droog’s brand-new and barely populated blog, designer Eric Klarenbeek produced something from over 200 of the salt shakers pictured below. It’s like a href=”http://2021supernormal.wordpress.com/”Supernormal/a meets a href=”http://www.gampermartino.com/projects/a-100-chairs-in-a-100-days/”Martino Gamper/a, Droog style. /p

Milan Design Week 2010 Preview: Wonderlamp by Studio Job and Pieke Bergmans

pWe want to make sure that you don’t miss this event if you’re planning to be in Milan for the Salone del Mobile this April. a href=”http://www.dilmos.com/”Dilmos/a will be presenting a new series of lighting objects, entitled emWonderlamp/em, from a href=”http://www.studiojob.nl/”Studio Job/a in collaboration with a href=”http://www.piekebergmans.com/”Pieke Bergmans/a. The project is a logical extension of both of their practices, employing oversized, everday forms (as is customary for Studio Job) and fluid light bulbs (echoing Pieke Bergmans Light Blubs project from 2008). /p

pSeven objects will be presented, each made of bronze and hand blown crystal. The projects are so new that all we could get our hands on is the picture below, which looks like it was taken by a cell phone./p

Milan Design Week 2010 Preview: Design Academy Eindhoven

pemWhat questions are we facing? What is the role of designers today? What is the future role of a designer? What are we focusing on?/em/p

pThis year in Milan, the a href=”http://www.designacademy.nl/”Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE)/a presents em?/em, a show framed as a series of questions addressed by this year’s graduation works. Unlike the ones above, taken from the exhibition’s press release, the ones asked by the student are thankfully much more specific./p

pFor example, in “Hair-Brush,” designer Lea Haefliger asks what kind of feelings hair provokes, incorporating all of its different qualities into a series of hairbrushes: blockquoteWhat kinds of feelings does hair provoke? Is it something mysterious, erotic, or rather, something like a fairytale? Lea Haefliger wanted to incorporate all these different aspects into a series of hairbrushes. During the design process she felt it was important to give the brushes a sustainable quality both in terms of material and emotion. Therefore, the hair on the brushes is not just a decorative element, but a functional one. /blockquote/pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/milan10/milan_design_week_2010_preview_design_academy_eindhoven__16255.asp”(more…)/a
