Blood Sucking but Life Saving

Blood type testing is a vital but often overlooked necessity in emergency medical situations. Unfortunately, anyone requiring a transfusion must wait for type results from the lab before one can be given. What if we could test at the location of the emergency, or even on the way to the hospital? Designed for natural disaster situations, the Emertest offers a solution that saves valuable time easily and conveniently. And what better animal to base the design on than…. the leech. Not as gross as it sounds – check it out!

Breathe Right with Help from the Earth

The DSI dry salt inhaler enables a natural treatment of respiratory diseases by using natural salt crystals from Europe’s largest salt mine in Parajd, Romania. A special feature of this biocompatible medical product is its special membrane, which prevents air from being blown back into the device, causing condensation. The one-way safety valve prevents the salt from contamination and accustoms the user to the right breathing technique in order to achieve the maximum therapeutic effect.
The product also features a removable salt container that makes it refillable. Its captivating design features an organic language of form that is reminiscent of a flat pebble. The white, smooth surface conveys cleanliness and freshness.

The only time fake can be fashionable!

The Impetus leg prosthetic gives sports-minded amputees not only the capability to play sports again, but to boost their confidence while doing so. 3D printed sections on the design can be interchanged and created precisely for the wearer’s individual taste and style or to carry uniform colors. Designed and shaped to bipedal physics and proportions, it gives amputees ability and aesthetics on the same level as non-amputee players.

Dental Clinic in Nakayamate by Tato Architects

Treatment rooms sit within a translucent house-shaped enclosure at this dental clinic in Kobe, Japan, by Tato Architects (+ slideshow).

Dental Clinic in Nakayamate by Tato Architects

Japanese studio Tato Architects started the renovation by stripping the interior back to the concrete and painting it white, before adding the translucent central volume to accommodate three separate treatment areas.

Wooden screens partition the central space. The walls comprise a film-coated glass, while the ceiling is made from sheets of translucent polycarbonate.

Architect Yo Shimada says the softened lighting of the space help patients to feel more comfortable: “We aimed to produce an space which is clean and peaceful at the same time by controlling the state of light.”

“The translucent material was chosen for lighting the consultation rooms only by the light transmitted through, so that light sources would not offend the eye of the patient in the tilted dental chair,” he added.

A waiting room and reception are positioned at the front of the clinic and furnished with square stools, wooden bookshelves and potted plants.

Bare light bulbs hang down from the ceiling, while a children’s playroom faces out to the street.

This is second project completed by Tato Architects this month, following a house in Osaka that references the ad-hoc extensions of neighbouring buildings.

Here’s a short description from the architects:

Dental Clinic in Nakayamate

The interior of the room was of rather coarse RC and in skeleton state. We painted the interior white and inserted a house type of translucent material to get the ceiling as high as possible without a touch on RC beams. This resulted in getting calm, peaceful consultation rooms.

A medical facility tends to become functional, cold space after all due to the indispensable requirement such as contamination-proof. I am of the opinion that we can produce an space which is clean and peaceful at the same time by controlling the state of light.

Keep Grandma in Check!

The EasyPill system utilizes modern technology to give elderly individuals the sense of independence they desire while also giving their loved ones & doctors peace of mind. The app-based system works hand-in-hand with an electronic pill case. When it’s time to take a specific med, that portion of the case lights up. In the event that a dose is missed, the system alerts the elderly’s family & doctors so they can take action. Doctors can remotely program & monitor the system from one simple application.

Bye, Bye Big Needles

Krystalin is an award winning medical design that introduces a new concept of next-gen disposable insulin delivery that aims to ease and simplify the process for diabetic patients. It’s easy to administer and track doses, but the biggest improvement by far is the elimination of the large needle component altogether. Hit the jump to see how it works!

Krystalin uses an array of crystal insulin which are grown into micro needles of size 450–550 microns over thin films. These non-invasive insulin patches (size 1cm x 1cm, equivalent to 10 units of insulin) are pain free and comparable to the mosquitoes needle sizes and can be used by both type1 and type2 diabetes. Once this patch is applied on to the skin, the crystal shaped insulin crystal gets dissolved and affects the patient immediately at subcutaneous level. The needles of the patch after being dissolved become blunt and can be disposed as it is no longer a bio waste.

UnCasted Cast

It’s bad enough that you have broken your arm and have to be out of action for almost three to four weeks; you also have to endure an unsightly cast. Unless something like this really tech-enabled U-Cast pops up! Totally impressed by its innovative approach of incorporating design into something very medical.
