R.A.D.

A Brooklyn-based zine for creative kids

radmag1.jpg radmag2.jpg

An aptly-titled children’s zine, R.A.D. (aka Read and Draw) gears its publication toward creative children and their parents in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg and Park Slope neighborhoods. Each clever issue takes up a particular seasonal or educational theme, packing more imagination than a Pixar holiday party into every page. Recent installments include a trip to the zoo, astronauts in space and Thanksgiving.

radmag3.jpg radmag4.jpg

By engaging kids with a range of activities like building a tepee, identifying endangered species, writing poems and more, R.A.D.’s biggest contribution may be its dedication to programs and creative content for kids in NYC (where the public school arts budget will be cut by 31% in 2011).

Published bi-weekly, R.A.D. is a free zine distributed through a network of children’s boutiques and schools around Brooklyn. (We spied it at Sweet William in Williamsburg.)

Architectural Record Editor-in-Chief Leaves to Become CEO of American Institute of Architects

While the American Institute of Architects gains a new leader, Architectural Record is losing one. It’s been announced that the magazine’s long-time editor-in-chief, Robert Ivy, has accepted the position of CEO and Executive Vice President of the AIA effective February 1st. Ivy had been with the magazine since 1996, as well as serving as an executive within publisher McGraw-Hill‘s Construction Media department, “overseeing the editorial quality of numerous print and online publications.” The move comes just seven months after the AIA announced that it would be leaving Architectural Record as their official magazine in favor of Architect, both of which in combination, have commenters voicing concerns about AR‘s longevity. Ivy will be taking over at the AIA and stepping into the role formerly occupied by Christine McEntee, who left this past summer for a position outside of the industry. As for the magazine now replacing Ivy, the Chicago Tribune‘s Blair Kamin reports that they will be on the hunt shortly.

Yoox.com Partners with Design Magazine Case da Abitare on ‘Xmas Craft’ Offering

Chris Kabel’s “Money Vase,” made from bronzed coins, and Oskar Zieta’s steel “Plopp” stool are two of the items that will be featured in Yoox’s “Xmas Craft” collection.

The glad retail tidings continue, this time with news of a design collaboration that has more immediate gifting potential. Global fashion and design e-commerce powerhouse yoox.com (which we have to thank for many a discounted Rick Owens topper and for feeding our Fornasetti addiction) has teamed with Italian design magazine Case da Abitare on “Xmas Craft,” a curated collection of design objects that will be offered exclusively on yoox.com later this month. Think of it as a highbrow, design-savvy version of Oprah’s Favorite Things.

The holiday partnership, which the Bologna, Italy-based Yoox Group is slated to announce tomorrow, will celebrate innovative approaches to traditional materials with a focus on what happens when industrial processes get a handcrafted twist. Look for linens designed by Valérie Barkowski for Bandit Queen alongside BTC’s handspun brass pendant lights and Oskar Zieta‘s award-winning powdercoated steel “Plopp” stool (pictured above) for Danish manufacturer HAY. And for your holiday table, there is porcelain a-plenty, including cups and saucers by Marco Bertolini for DMK and elegant platinum-coated bowls by Tsé Tsé Associées. Case da Abitare editors selected each item to “tempt and delight the discerning Christmas shopper,” according to Yoox. Design fans in 67 countries will have through New Year’s Eve to splurge.

Anthology Magazine

A new quarterly magazine pairing storytelling with unscripted interior design
anthology1.jpg

With the creation of their new quarterly shelter and lifestyle publication Anthology, editor Anh-Minh Le and creative director Meg Mateo Ilasco have introduced a beautifully-assembled magazine that juxtaposes eye-catching photographic coverage of home décor, travel, design, entertaining, and culture with compelling narratives on these subjects.

anthology2.jpg

Anh-Minh, veteran contributor to publications like The San Francisco Chronicle and ReadyMade magazine, and Meg, author of several home design books and creator of the Modern Economy sample sale, came together to produce this print publication with the idea of putting together a magazine that’s not about perfection or providing a model of the ideal home. Rather, says Meg, “We’re about authenticity and real living—we ask our stylists not to bring too many props and encourage them to use what the owners have. We won’t show you a paint-by-numbers round up of products to steal the look of another home.”

anthology3.jpg

“Most importantly,” Meg told us, “we’re about good stories—if there isn’t a good one to share, it doesn’t make the cut.” Anh-Minh chimed in, “Maybe it’s because we’re both writers, but we love the backstory and learning how someone or something became who or what they are today—whether it’s a piece of furniture, a home’s interior, or an individual in the design community.” Additionally, there was no trepidation about the print medium. It was a no-brainer, the two say, to match the thoughtful content to what these days is an unexpected format; the title and focus of the first issue, aptly enough, is “The Slow Life.”

anthology4.jpg

With features such as the home of Jen Mankins, owner of Brooklyn clothing store Bird, an interview with Design*Sponge founder Grace Bonney, contributions by photographer Thayer Allyson Gowdy, and a trip to Park City, the inaugural issue of Anthology is not to be missed. Bracket

Singapore spreads the news with a unique magazine dedicated to design
craft1.jpg

A foreword by BBDK design agency founder and Thinkingforaliving’s Duane King on the modern definition of craft kicks off the inaugural quarterly issue of Singaporean magazine Bracket, featuring interviews with an international who’s who in the creative industry like Aaron Rose, Geoff McFetridge, Frank Chimero and even musician and skate punk Tommy Guerrero.

craft2.jpg

“But craftsmanship doesn’t pertain just to the handmade,” King writes. “Instead, craftsmanship is a basic human impulse; the desire to do a job well for its own sake. A craftsman is engaged in their work.” To that end, the artists starring in the issue are design studio SILNT and its research arm Anonymous’ picks of those who they believe best exemplify the issue’s theme.

craft3.jpg

The format is simple. Subjects respond to a questionnaire by writing out their answers by hand and sending them back that way. While seemingly primarily geared toward those who recognize the names in the issue, questions like “What keeps you going?” and “Who/What do you have a bone to pick with?” keep it interesting for casual readers. Many of the interviewees sprinkle their sheets with doodles, while others like Amsterdam creative agency KesselsKramer take the cue and run with it, sending back a photographic accompaniment to answers.

craft4.jpg

Only eight issues total, each between 24 and 36 pages, of the newsprint-printed issue are planned. Michel Gondry is already confirmed for the next edition, and upcoming topics will cover hunger, ethics and failure. Out in February 2011, the debut issue is $23 including postage for those outside of Singapore, and can be ordered directly from the site.

Candy Girl: Will Cotton’s Nude Portrait of Katy Perry Makes Cover of ARTnews

After W‘s “Art Issue” cover matchup of Kim Kardashian and Barbara Kruger left readers feeling flummoxed and sleazy, ARTnews gives us a celebrity-artist alliance we can believe in: kooky songstress Katy Perry captured by the ever-confectionary Will Cotton. The painting, which you may recall as the cover art for Perry’s recent “Teenage Dream” album (Cotton also art-directed her “California Gurls” video), is the cotton candy-clad welcome to the December ARTnews—a special issue devoted to the nude. Get ready to disrobe so as to best appreciate critic Lilly Wei‘s consideration of the dearth of male genitalia in contemporary art and Gail Gregg’s article on drawing from life models. Meanwhile, a vigorous round of naked calisthenics is recommended before delving into painter Philip Pearlstein suggestive essay on late-19th-century nude motion studies by Thomas Eakins and Eadweard Muybridge (we can’t get enough of him). The December issue of ARTnews hits newsstands November 30.
