Wanted: Designer Who Knows How to Share

zipzip.jpgWe once spent an entire Thanksgiving attempting to explain Zipcar‘s business model (“And each car has its own name!”) to some more chronologically advanced family members who remain suspicious of car leasing much less vehicle sharing. The booming young company is doing a much better job than we did of conveying the appeal of “wheels when you want them.” Part of that success is attributable to Zipcar’s crack design team, to which the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company is looking to add one innovation-minded interactive designer. Responsibilities include designing and implementing online advertising, video and web campaigns, and rich media applications as well as collaborating with other members of Team Zipcar to execute brand-focused marketing and web-based communications for 13 regional markets.

Wanted: Urban(e) Designer

searchers.jpgIt’s hard to live, so hard to live in the city. We know this to be true because we live in the city and also because Albert Hammond, Jr. tells us so in song. Citysearch seeks to ease urban dwelling through its various local media offerings, and the company has recently set out on a search of its own—not for a terrific tapas restaurant or an establishment that rents pink scooters but for “a sharp mobile designer with a clean and refined design aesthetic” to join its West Hollywood office. Bring your leadership skills, Photoshop and Illustrator expertise, and a passion for on-the-go apps. If they stump you with tricky interview questions, just take a deep breath and ask yourself: WWJJD? (What would Jane Jacobs do?) Works every time.

Wanted: Designer with a Penchant for Pink, Prints, and Palm Trees

lilly prints.jpg

Palm beach socialite-turned-roadside orange juice seller Lilly Pulitzer had no idea when in the late 1950s she ordered her dressmaker to whip up a shift dress in colorful, juice stain-concealing printed cotton that her name would become synonymous with acid-hued preppy chic. After some ups and downs, the brand is back in growth mode with an expanding network of retail stores, a burgeoning portfolio of Lilly merch (who’s up for a hibiscus-printed sportcoat?), and more than 5,000 Twitter followers. Now the hunt is on for an “extremely collaborative and extremely creative” graphic designer to help satisfy the core base of Lilly lovers while introducing or reintroducing the brand to new audiences. Interested? Bring your marketing prowess, brand-building skills, and faith in panda prints to save the world—or at least an endangered species or two. Our pre-interview advice: don head-to-toe Lilly and then spill some orange juice on yourself (no one will notice!).

Wanted: Designer to Blind Them with Science

man of science.jpgDo you excel at explaining phenomena ranging from plate tectonics to nuclear fission using only a pen and a dinner napkin? Read Science for the figures? Doodle double helices—and their accompanying nucleotides? Then listen up, because the American Association for the Advancement of Science (or “triple-ay-ess,” as the cool kids call it) is looking for a visual Einstein to manage its design projects in its Washington, DC headquarters. Need you be able to tell xylem from phloem, ventricles from atria, a chupacabra from an exasperated kangaroo? Probably not, but be ready to describe how your “appropriate and compelling design approach” will react with your “solid project management” skills to best present AAAS to the public, members, and other stakeholders. And don’t forget to balance your equation.

Wanted: Multi-Dimensional Designer

3D_guy.jpgDo you prefer your motion pictures immersive? Do you have an unquenchable appetite for movies about ocean life? Then you might be just the person the IMAX Corporation is looking to add to its Santa Monica, California creative team. The digital entertainment and technology company is on the hunt for a creative coordinator that will be responsible for supporting the development, design, production, and delivery for all film marketing materials. The successful candidate will plant hardy design ideas and harvest prize projects in the realms of tickets, merchandise, promotions, customer relations, and field marketing.
