Posted in: UncategorizedThe Unusual Chair by Japanese design firm h220430 is an expression of the current state of fragility the region is experiencing due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Though it has been 2 years since the disaster & things appear to be normal, the reality of the condition is far from it. The chair aims to reflect this abnormality in its missing leg, which viewers might overlook without closer examination. It’s a subtle & thoughtful reminder that the existence of danger is ever present despite our attempts to ignore it.

Nomadic Furniture by Jorge Penadés
Posted in: slideshowsSpanish designer Jorge Penadés has devised a chair made from simple wooden boards that collapses into a backpack (+ slideshow).
Penadés deliberately made the seat easy to deconstruct and transport at the expense of its comfort.
“Luxury is not anymore a matter of comfort,” said the designer. “Nowadays, luxury is to be able to decide where you want to have a moment of peace, a chance to escape from hectic activity of contemporary lifestyles.”
The furniture is constructed without screws or glue and simply slots together with small brightly coloured metal connectors.
“The system works through connections inspired by traditional wooden joinery that can be assembled and disassembled by hand, with small gestures,” Penadés explained.
“This fact allows the user to move easily with the seat from one place to another, emphasising dynamism as the object´s inherent purpose,” he added.
The components can be packed into a sling comprising leather patches and adjustable ratchet straps, and carried around on the user’s back.
The design is a continuation of the young Málaga-based designer’s graduation project from the Escola Superior de Disseny i d’Arts Plàstiques in Barcelona and will be on show as part of Product Design Madrid at the Architectural Association in the city from 21 to 24 November.
Here’s some more information from Jorge Penadés:
Nomadic Chair: a temporary seat for one person
Responding to society´s current and future needs born from modern culture, this project explores the potential of temporary furniture.
Reducing comfort to the minimum in order to enlarge mobility to the maximum, Penadés encourage us to reconsider our ideas of contemporary furniture and give them new meanings in a more ephemeral context.
This project is based on a structure without any kind of screws, nails or glue. The system works through connections inspired by traditional wooden joinery that can be assembled and disassembled by hand, with small gestures in (approx) 2 minutes. This fact allows the user to move easily with the seat from one place to another, emphasising dynamism as the object´s inherent purpose.
Jorge Penadés is currently investigating new possibilities of temporary furniture in order to create a collection of pieces within the same principle, understanding furniture as itinerant objects rather than static.

This versatile design is composed of wood with the exception of the rear metallic pivot pin and hook that makes it possible to hang on the wall, completely out of the way.

Swiss designer Florian Hauswirth has designed a collection of bedroom furniture including an ash shelving unit with components made by a bookbinder.
The three-tier Bookbinder Shelf by Florian Hauswirth features two ladder-like oak side frames and four shelves, joined by wooden components that hook under the side struts.
“It is a simple system with two screws per plank, which you don’t need an instruction manual to put together,” said Hauswirth.
The shelving unit can be enclosed by adding coloured panels to the ends or flaps with tabs to the front, which were made of cardboard covered with textile by a bookbinder.
“I adapted this craft and applied it to my furniture design,” he said. “It is somehow logical for a bookshelf to incorporate a bookbinding technique.”
His Bedroom Collection also features a bed and storage box for small items kept beside it.
The Radius Edge Bed features a simple curved joint on the legs. “Wooden joints are usually quite sharp and edgy, but as a tree is round it seems logical to break this craft tradition,” explained Hauswirth.
The Bedbox is made in the same materials as the panels for the shelving unit. It features a flap on the top for storing a mobile phone and a drawer that pulls out from the front.
Hauswirth previously worked at Vitra and studied industrial design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. He currently works as a designer and teacher in Beil, Switzerland.
