The Cover wood and plywood chair by Thomas Bentzen for Danish brand Muuto is made without any metal parts. Instead it is locked together by the bent veneer armrests.

“I aimed for a crisp and vivid expression in the plywood while looking for a solid and grounded look in the frame and base of the chair,” said Bentzen. “Three years of play and hard work in the making has resulted in a light yet strong armchair, playing and taking the moulded veneer to its extreme.”

The chair comes in ash or oak, lacquered in black, grey, dark grey, red, green or natural.

The L-shaped uprights of the handles will brace against the bottom of the box to stack the units vertically, with the cross-bars fitting into grooves on the underside of the box above.

“In today’s world, one space may be used alternatively as a dining area, work area, and child’s play area,” said the designers. “What we propose here is a moveable storage cabinet to suit changing lifestyles, in terms of functionality and individual needs.”

The trays come in sky blue, white, yellow, dark green, pink and grey.

“Given the variety of colours available, the boxes can be designated by colour according to the needs of the family,” said the designers. “One for a child’s toys, one for a mother’s hobby materials, one for a father’s business documents and so forth, or according to their purpose.”

Clothes stand with Y-shaped coat hangers by Mifune Design Studio

Japanese designer Yasutoshi Mifune has created a clothes stand with Y-shaped coat hangers that slot into the base when not in use.

Designed by Mifune Design Studio, the HC Hanger features a single steel rod attached to a matching circular base and bent back and forth to create three horizontal bars.

Y Hanger by Mifune Design Studio

The flat plywood hangers stack neatly on the base when not required and are held in place by another short rod.

“We have some situations when a clothes hanger is not necessary, for example when we only hang a scarf,” Mifune said. “I wanted to make a product with a simple shape and a common material that we can use to store hangers when a clothes hanger is not needed.”

Y Hanger by Mifune Design Studio

Yasutoshi Mifune originally designed the Y Hanger in 2012 and the stand is a development of the idea.

New Mid-Century Done Right

The Avsnitt Armchair & Trestles are the outcome of an exercise in developing a construction where an entire piece can be produced using the same oval section throughout the design. The result is a simplistic yet polished aesthetic with clear 1960s Scandinavian inspiration. With the exception of the single joint in the back leg, each piece is joined using a series of housings, which are held in place using a single dowel. The progressive line is ideal for large-scale batch production due to the nature of the single piece construction.

Competition: three FLAXX chairs to be won

FLAXX chairs competition

Competition: Dezeen has teamed up with Intier Automotive Eybl to give readers the chance to win one of three chairs moulded from flax.

All four legs are connected at the front of the chair, so the seat and backrest are cantilevered. This form allows the chairs to neatly stack on top of each other.

Available in a range of colours, the pictured model with a sand seat and white frame will be received by winners of this competition. For more information about the design visit the FLAXX website or check out the company on Facebook.

FLAXX chairs competition

Here’s some more information from Intier Automotive Eybl:

The FLAXX Chair is a hybrid design which offers the comfort of a free-swinging chair as well as the functionality of a conventional four-legged chair. The novel structure of the support frame and the combination of advantages from both designs is a contemporary interpretation in both form and function. The seat shell is made from natural fibre mats, which are moulded into a stable three-dimensional form by pressing multiple layers of the material. The mats predominantly consist of flax, an annually renewable raw material, and are held together by textile polypropylene as an adhesive.

The seat shell and frame are made of 100 percent recyclable materials. The FLAXX chair is part of permanent collection of the Design Museum Holon/Tel Aviv and the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art – MAK in Vienna.
