nokia push logo.jpg

PUSH N900 is a unique design and hacking project from Nokia. Conceived by Hyper & Tinker.it!, PUSH N900 gives designers, hackers, modders, creatives and artists the chance to get their hands on, and heads inside, the new Nokia N900. The PUSH N900 project launched on 13th September, with an open call for submissions. Entries need to demonstrate how you would hack & mod the N900 to connect it to something you love. The winning submissions will provided with N900 devices, funding &support to develop their PUSH idea. These will then be toured around international Nokia Flagship Stores.

To launch the project, Hyper & Tinker.it! have developed the PUSH BriefBot. This connects the N900 device to a range of 1980s retro items, allowing these items to control the N900. Featuring 8-track players, joysticks, Speak and Spell & multiple N900 devices, the BriefBot will be launched at onedotzero. PUSH N900 will be at the London Design Festival as part of Designersblock. Here Hyper and Tinker.it! will be demoing the 80s themed N900 mods. Visitors to Designersblock will be able with them and ask questions about the build process, competition entry and N900 24th to 27th of September 09.

London Design Festival 09 Preview: Dream Ball by Unplug Design

unplug dream ball.jpg

The London Design Festival is just about to kick off so it is time to give you a little preview of what to expect. We will be out and about to cover the most interesting stuff around, reaching from the young gunslingers to the old stagers.

For example there is Dream ball, a brand new soccer ball, which is made by recycling famine relief packaging. Since buying a soccer ball is a luxury for children living in third world countries, they usually make one out of ropes and trash. Aid provided from the UN and RED CROSS to people living the third world is usually packaged in boxes, but most of them contain medication, food and other fundamental commodities. Unplug design wants to give something that will put a smile on childrens faces, a toy that can give them hope and joy. They have redesigned relief packaging in a way that after it has served its primary purpose, it can turn into different types of balls depending on the size of the boxes. They are made by simply cutting by hand the perforated cardboard boxes and weaving the pieces.

The makers are Hwng kung chan, Jin song kyou, Lee hak su, Han min hyun and Jun jin of the Seoul based design studio Unplug . Showing as part of the Designersblock, the designers describe their design approach as follows: “Pull out the plug from the system and plug into the community.”

The Thing and Jonathan Lethem at Printed Matter, September 15th

thethinissue7.jpg

We’ve talked a bit about literary objects in the recent past (see our post on Significant Objects), and we’re especially excited to announce that The Thing, a quarterly periodical in the form of an object, will be celebrating the release of Jonathan Lethem’s Issue at Printed Matter on September 15th, 5-7pm.

Jonathan’s issue is entitled the “Chaldron Optical System.” It relates to his upcoming novel CHRONIC CITY and consists of a glasses case, a pair of clear glasses with text on each of the arms, and a care and maintenance manual written in both English and French.

Though we won’t know what it’s all about until Chronic City comes out on October 13th, we love the idea that objects in stories can become objects in real life. If you’re into this too, pick up a copy of Lethem’s issue at Printed Matter on the 15th, and, bonus, have it signed by the author himself.

Oh, and in case you’re curious, Amazon has posted the first chapter of Chronic City here.

How Did You Spend Fashions Night Out?

AA at BG.jpg
(All Photos: UnBeige)

FNO BGzp.jpgHow did some of our favorite creative people spend Fashion’s Night Out, the retail-themed holiday formerly known as Georges Bataille‘s birthday? We hit the streets of New York last night to find out. A few of the highlights:

  • The “interdisciplinary creativity team” that is Andrew Andrew (pictured above) DJ’ed the night away at Bergdorf Goodman, where they took to their MacBook-fueled turntables amidst the Goyard sacs de voyage. The duo proclaimed the event “totally bonkers,” in a good way.

  • Meanwhile, elsewhere at Bergdorf’s, we admired Zac Posen‘s handpainted dresses (at right), in which we detected the sprit of Sam Francis, and then lovingly fondled pretty much everything on the fourth floor (that’s Chado Ralph Rucci territory, people!) before heading upstairs to enjoy the vocal stylings of Isaac Mizrahi and the Ben Waltzer Trio, not to mention the excellent display of John Derian decoupage.

  • Designer Lela Rose triumphed in a Top Chef-style cook-off that pitted her against the likes of Peter Som and Gilles Mendel.

  • Just up the block at Barneys, it was kiln or be kiln, as Jonathan Adler threw pots while Simon Doonan cheered him on.

    Eurobike 2009: Top 5 Trends

    eurobike2009_blog_00.jpg

Eurobike, the world’s leading tradeshow for the bike industry took place last week in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The upcoming E-bikes were one of the hottest topics but there’s more to see. As usual, design is in the details, therefore a closer look at this year’s trends in bikes and bike parts highlighting lightweight, comfort, computerization, and style!

    eurobike2009_blog_01.jpg

    1. Rise of the E-bike
Since the first E-bikes entered the market few years ago a lot has changed. Their engines have become extremely compact, sometimes invisibly integrated within the bike frame as demonstrated by the Sparta ION e-bikes. Also, their support range has improved to 80-90 kilometers. Being 3-4 times more expensive than a normal bike makes them a promising moneymaker for the bicycle industry. Of all spotted e-bikes, our favorite example is the lightweight and portable Gocycle, designed from scratch and awarded with this year’s Eurobike award.

More trends and photos after the jump!

Call For Entries: 2010 Buckminster Fuller Challenge

    0bfi2010.jpg

The Buckminster Fuller Institute has announced the call for entries for their 2010 running of the Buckminster Fuller Challenge, which seeks ideas for “the development and implementation of a solution that has significant potential to solve humanity’s most pressing problems.”

“We’re looking for comprehensive anticipatory design solutions that address multiple problems without creating new ones down the road – integrated strategies dealing with key social, economic, environmental, policy and cultural issues.

Our entry criteria is deeply inspired by what Fuller termed comprehensive anticipatory design science – a methodological approach to solving complex problems that we feel holds an important key to how innovators need to be thinking about the design of strategies if they are to have a transformative effect on the system as a whole,” explains Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Director of the Buckminster Fuller Institute.

Deadline’s October 30th, and first prize is 100 large.

One of the things we particularly love about this competition is the Idea Index that the BFI leaves posted, showing previous years’ winners, runners-up, finalists, and honorable mentions. Click here to see the Idea Index, and click here to learn more about the competition.
