Joby Inspired: SF pop-up store and gallery

joby-comp.jpg

Joby, the maker of the popular Gorillapod mini tripods, asked Philip Wood of Citizen:Citizen fame to design a pop-up store and gallery in San Francisco.   They had a rocking opening night for the gallery last week, and this Thursday they will have the product launch party.

For the exhibit various creative collaborators re-mixed and re-imagined the iconic Joby products:

Derek Chen, Envelope AD, Design Glut, Richard Hansen, Materious, Peter Stathis, and Philip Wood.

Core77 Live 1 Hour Design Challenge at ‘A Better World by Design’

Core77_IHDC_live.jpg

We took the Core77 1 Hour Design Challenge on the road to “A Better World by Design,” last weekend, a 3 day student-run conference at Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. Focusing on climate change, slum living, and over-dependence on fossil fuels, the underlying message of the conference was how individuals can (and have) effect change by empowering communities to collaborate and act now.

If the 1 Hour Design Challenge is the kind of activity you save for a rainy day, that day arrived in full force last Saturday. Breaking for lunch, attendees were put into small teams, given a large sketch pad, sharpies, and this design challenge:

For this Live 1 Hour Design Challenge, Core77 invites you to redefine, redesign, and re-imagine… “The Next TV Dinner.”

The TV Dinner, first introduced to the world in 1953, promised convenience, affordability, and a revolutionary way to serve meals to your family. As the advertisements proclaimed, there was “No Work Before” and “No Dishes After!”

In 2009, the landscapes of consumption, food, health and entertainment have seen radical change: Childhood obesity is up 400%. The average American household has a TV playing for 8 hours and 14 minutes every day. 66% of Americans regularly watch television while eating dinner. Add to these statistics the reduction of time families spend eating meals together, the onslaught of processed foods into our diets, and the widespread use of unsustainable food packaging, and you’ve got a area ripe for design intervention

THE LIVE CHALLENGE

Most teams stuck closely to brief (an instant meal), addressing issues of nutrition, locally sourced food, closed loop systems for delivery, recycling and various takes on cloud based apps with user profiles, rating meals and netflix-style ordering systems.

A number of entries incorporated an educational component ranging from healthy eating tips to conversational topic starters for the dinner table. Surprisingly there wasn’t a single twitter-based entry and only one iPhone App. The vibe was great, there was a lot of valuable dialogue and it created an opportunity for participants to mix with each other in a meaningful way–especially given the diverse background of attendees and age range.

avb_designblok_prague_2009.jpg

Today, Prague’s favorite design festival kicks off! Designblok 2009 takes place from 6-11 October showcasing a top selection of designs, interiors, and fashion items all over town. Last year, over 30,000 visitors made Designblok the biggest social event in the city of Prague.

This year, the five-day event is anchored by two central exhibitions at the so called Superstudios (almost 6,000 square meters of showroom) both situated in the Holesovice area. A compact design guide promises a full program of exhibitions and happenings at the Karlin and Stare a Nove Mesto areas – just like the slogan says: “You can’t escape design!”

Curious about the ins and outs of Czech design? Stay tuned – Core is on its way for coverage, and looking forward meeting up with Honza and Liza (the sheep) who both make a wonderful visual.

London Design Festival 09: ReDesign – Doing for the Kids

Doing it for the Kids was an exhibition of sustainable play design, presented by [re]design at 100% Design in London. It explored play types, the importance of play in child development, how toys help mould our kids’ values and how they impact on the environment. The exhibition presented examples of sustainable toys and other play resources, to inspire designers, educators and parents to be more critical and creative.

Shown above is a video where Andrew Duffy from Myfirst presented their Rotational Moulding DIY machine, to explore sustainability, re-using old plastic packaging and toys and combining them into new toys – made from Bio resin with the use of recycled house hold packaging for the moulds.

They therefore supply contemporary furniture to create beautiful and stimulating environments for children.

Jenny and Deidre will be there, so please stop by and say hello, peruse our books, pocket mirrors, eclecto notebooks and — of course! —the magazine. The show hours are quite long and we’d love some volunteers to help out! If you live in the Vancouver area and are willing to spend a few hours, we’d love to hear from you. Please email Janine with your phone number and day that you’re available. Thanks! (info AT uppercasegallery dot ca)

Which CW Starlet Looked The Hottest At Teen Vogue’s Young Hollywood Party?

imageSomehow Teen Vogue’s annual Young Hollywood Party seemed so much more laid-back without having to watch Lauren Conrad run around backstage on the verge of tears like a chicken with its head cut off. While I’m sure there were plenty of other interns slaving behind the wings making sure it all ran smoothly, the event was much more enjoyable from our view on the red carpet. After all, what’s a Teen Vogue party without the chance to really check out the entrance ensembles! With all the black, chrome, and grey dresses and pantsuits, I couldn’t help but ask myself, has fall finally arrived, or is everyone just feeling “blah” tonight? And also, who are some of these people? I had to give credit to CW’s newest bad girl, Katie Cassidy, for brightening the mood with a seriously colorful corseted number… while her fellow station-pals Jessica Stroup and AnnaLynne McCord kept it cool in monochrome. Vote below on which CW actress repped her re-make show the best on the red carpet! Photo Credit: PR Photos

London Design Festival 09: In Praise of Shadows

Praise of Shadows 15.jpg

Praise of Shadows 1.jpg

The exhibition In Praise of Shadows that happened in the V&A during the London Design Festival, marked the decision by EU governments to phase out low efficiency light bulbs by 2012. It included work by a wide variety of designers such as Drift, Pieke Bergmans, Loop.ph and many more, as well as films by Clan du Neon – French eco activists who protest against the senseless waste of energy and light pollution by extinguishing neon advertising signs. The show was set up in a dark room containing objects of the museum’s collection. The only light sources were some of the exhibits on show as well as a torch light that each visitor was given when entering. A very unique and fun show, creating a culture clash and almost mystical sense when exploring it – exhibition design at its best.

London Design Festival 09: Telling Tales

Telling Tales 1.jpg

Telling Tales 4.jpg

The Telling Tales exhibition in the Victoria and Albert Museum explored the recent trend among European designers for unique or limited edition pieces that push the boundaries between art and design. It showcased furniture, lighting and ceramics, designed by a new generation of international designers, including Tord Boontje, Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey and Studio Job, who are all inspired by the spirit of story-telling. Each tells a tale through their use of decorative devices, historical allusions or choice of materials, sharing common themes such as fantasy, parody and a concern with mortality.
