Speed! Glamour! Phil Patton!: Museum of NYC Looks at Car Culture

(Gottscho-Schleisner).jpg
A 1948 photograph of L Motors on 175th Street and Broadway is on view in the Museum of the City of New York’s “Cars, Culture, and the City” exhibition.

Who says that New York isn’t a car town? A new exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York examines the city’s essential role in creating today’s car culture and how the car has helped to shape modern New York. Don’t miss the streamlined automotive delights of Norman Bel-Geddes, who designed the now iconic General Motors Pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Futurama, indeed. Get the full story on the “Cars, Culture, and the City” exhibition on the evening of Tuesday, April 20, when automobile design authority Phil Patton (who co-curated the show with the MCNY’s Donald Albrecht) will discuss how New York helped make the automobile a modernist icon. Expect speed, glamour, and photos that will make you wish you had bid on Jay Gatsby‘s Rolls Royce when you had the chance. Tickets for the talk are available here.

Urban Play proposal for Helsinki World Design Capital 2012

    div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/urbanplaypiano.jpg” width=”468″ height=”319″ alt=”urbanplaypiano.jpg”//div

pThe title of “World Design Capital” has been called into question in the blogosphere of late, with what appears to be a rather underwhelming and bizarrely uneventful display by the current holder Seoul (Core77’s report a href=”http://bit.ly/dus1qW”here/a)./p

pWith preparations for the reign of Helsinki in 2012 well underway, and in what appears a timely response to these criticisms, design students at Helsinki’s still freshly formed Aalto University are taking matters into their own hands with a proposal they hope will bring life to the city streets, as the gaze of the global design community turns on the capital./p

pThe “Urban Play” intervention (not to be confused with the Droog design event of the same name), if accepted by the local council, will take over bus and tram stops in the city, turning what would be an aggravating and irksome wait for visiting children and parents into an inspiring, multi-sensory play experience./p

pYou’ve got to love the delightfully humble paper-cutout stop-frame used to promote the project (starts a little slow but view from 00:33 and onwards for the best bits)./p

Which Star Was Most Chic In Her Minidress At The Kids’ Choice Awards?

imageThe Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, which take place every spring at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion (Go Bruins!), have always traditionally been a more casual-cute affair. You know — nice jeans, fun heels, maybe a funky jacket and some chunky jewelry to emphasize that you’re actually attending a televised event, not just a trip to the movies. After all, who wants to get slimed in a hot-off-the-runway outfit? In the past couple years, however, I couldn’t help but notice that today’s generation of rising starlets have been pulling out all the stops on the orange carpet. Designer pumps, low-cut dresses, diamond jewelry, you name it! While some teeter on the edge of age-appropriateness and others just seem to forget that it is a more casual daytime affair, they still certainly look fashionable beyond their years! Selena Gomez managed to maintain her cuteness in a Grecian-inspired yellow dress, sandals, and a messy braid, while ex-BFF Demi Lovato was her usual rocker-chic self in all black. As for the ladies who are actually of age, Nikki Reed’s tiered floral dress was springtime perfect, and Rihanna’s long-sleeved mini was surprisingly wearable compared to her usual bold choices! Vote below for who you think looked best in her minidress! Photo Credit: PR Photos

Iceland Design March 2010: Stefan Petur Solveigarson Explains the Moustache

pWhen I saw this sign on the front door of a bar in Reykjavik, I knew this country had something special to offer in terms of creativity:/p

    div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/0solveig01.jpg” width=”468″ height=”518″ alt=”0solveig01.jpg”//div

    pYes indeed./p

p”This moustache is new,” explained A HREF=”http://solson.is/” Stefan Petur Solveigarson/A, the Icelandic industrial designer behind the flatpack Skrauti candelabra. Solveigarson was giving us press guys a walking tour of Reykjavik, pointing out spots of design interest, when the conversation turned to moustaches. “See that guy across the street? I bet he didn’t have a moustache last month, either.” /p

    div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/0solveig02.jpg” width=”468″ height=”709″ alt=”0solveig02.jpg”//div

pHe went on to explain that the moustaches sprouting up on men’s faces all over Reykjavik–and presumably, the Tom Selleck competition–were part of a recent campaign to raise awareness of testicular cancer. Rather than an armband, which you can lose or forget, a moustache is easy to carry and visible right away. He figured he’d do his part and grow the bush./p

pSolveigarson himself is a designer with a sense of humor; in addition to designing serious stuff like this newspaper rack and wall-hangable cutting board with internal magnets to hold cutlery, /p

Unclutterer giving away four Fujitsu ScanSnaps in April

I cannot tell you how excited I am to share this news with you. In April, thanks to the amazing generosity of the Fujitsu company, Unclutterer will be giving away FOUR ScanSnap S1300 scanners to our readers.

April 22 this year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and we wanted to do something big to commemorate the event. We’ve teamed up with Fujitsu to help our readers cut back on paper waste, digitize clutter, and better organize work/home offices. We will give away one ScanSnap S1300 scanner on April 1, April 8, April 15, and April 22 (four scanners total) to celebrate.

The prizes: The ScanSnap S1300 is the latest multi-page color scanner from Fujitsu. It is compatible with both PCs and Macs, scans both sides of the page, has optical character recognition, can transform any document into a Word file with just a click of a button, is able to scan a document up to 34 inches long and as small as 2″ x 2″, and is even Energy Star compliant. My description of this awesome machine doesn’t do it justice, so please check out the full product details.

How to enter to win: Entering to win is simple. All you need to do is follow us on Twitter. If you aren’t already on Twitter, create an account and then follow us @Unclutterer.

Each Thursday of the giveaway at 10:00 a.m. EDT, I will enter the number of our Twitter followers into the Random Integer Generator at random.org and select that day’s one winner. You only need to follow us once (and please, only once), to participate in the giveaway. If you already follow us on Twitter, then you are already participating and need not do anything more. Winners of the giveaway will have 24 hours to respond to a direct message from @Unclutterer to claim their new scanner. Failure to respond within 24 hours will disqualify you from the giveaway.

While you’re following @Unclutterer, consider also following Fujitsu @ScanSnapIT for scanning tips and news. I know that some of you aren’t interested in social media and will complain about having to sign up for Twitter to participate in the giveaway — however, this is the easiest way for us to manage the giveaway and it insures that many of our readers are already entered to win with no additional effort on their part. Also, if you’re an avid Wired magazine reader, you know that social networking sites can help increase worker productivity if used efficiently. If you still wish to complain, well, please don’t because you can always cancel your account after the contest has ended. This is simply the easiest way for us to conduct the giveaway.

I am so exited about this April event and cannot wait to give away FOUR Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 scanners. Remember, you have until 10:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, April 1, to follow us on Twitter for the first scanner giveaway. Good luck, and again a special thanks to Fujitsu for their amazing generosity!
