DesigNYC: Call for Round Two Submissions

designyc.jpg

DesigNYC, a one-year-old organization that matches nonprofit/community design needs with pro bono designers, has just opened its call for their second round of project submissions from nonprofits, community groups, and city agencies, eligible if they are serving the public good. A round-up of the most compelling projects will be selected by the DesigNYC team and matched with a professional design leader in the fields of architecture, landscape design, interior design, comunication design and more.

To enter your project in the running, visit read over the requirements and submit before November 5th, 5:00pm. If you’re a designer based in NYC interested in contributing your services, you can submit a profile at any time. The organization is sporting a brand new website, with images and project descriptions and updates from their inaugural round of organization-designer partnerships, so worth a visit even if you aren’t submitting.

For even more info, read the post we did on the results of DesigNYC’s first year.

Reflections on PICNIC 2010: What Are You Bringing?

picnic-entrance-lead.jpg

Guest post by Dave Malouf.

PICNIC 2010 was the 5th incarnation of this now staple Amsterdam event. They call it a festival so people don’t think they are supposed to come and sit on their butts for the 3 days. The motto this year was “What are you bringing?” and most everyone brought something.

Attendees have been known to call it a hands-on TED, but I think that’s inaccurate. While there are plenty of good ideas, the caliber is not consistent. Some speakers are, in fact, former TED speakers themselves, but not all live up to that level of performance and story telling. Still, there is definitely plenty to do beyond listening and networking, though that is, of course, a big part of any event.

Design + Sustainability + Profitability

We’ve all known for a while now that it pays to be green. But beyond the deployment of green values in publicity and marketing, what are the hard and real costs, choices and trade-offs design companies face when they integrate sustainability thinking into their core business strategy? Our guest speakers, all active and influential within their respective creative disciplines, have innovated their products and processes so that today’s profits don’t compromise the needs – and profits – of tomorrow.

This town hall is hosted by NYDesigns and will take place at 45-50 30th Street, Long Island City. Please RSVP, space is limited.

The evening
6.30 – 7.00 pm Networking with drinks
7.00 – 8.30 pm Speakers each present a project/issue

Core77 announces Powers of Ten Video Response Design Competition!

Core77_Powers_Of_Ten-1.jpg

On the occasion of Powers of Ten Day (10/10/10), Core77 and the Eames Office are proud to launch the Powers of Ten Video Response Design Competition—a new design competition inviting designers to submit 2-minute “response videos” to the Eames’s seminal film Powers of Ten. The videos can respond to the film in any form—from reinterpretations and mashups to tributes and reflections–with the entry period running through January 9th, 2011.

The jury includes Eames Demetrios from the Eames Office, filmaker Gary Hustwit, MoMA’s Paola Antonelli, Adam Bly from Seed Media Group, Ayse Birsel of Birsel+Seck, and Allan Chochinov from Core77. The prizes are full-featured (see below) and we are looking forward to seeing some extraordinarily creative work!

The competition will be hosted on Core77’s new “Design Arena” Community Challenge platform, powered by Jovoto—an open innovation platform built for community collaboration and exchange. Since the platform allows designers to “update” their entries up until the competition deadline, designers can upload storyboards, inspirations, and sketches, getting feedback and iterating their way to their final video. Designers can submit as many entries as they’d like.

At Core77, we’re very excited about celebrating Powers of Ten, and want to encourage everyone to participate! Full details below.

UX Hong Kong 2011: Q&A with Daniel Szuc

hk.jpg

UX Hong Kong 2011 is a new event organized by Daniel Szuc and Josephine Wong of Apogee Hong Kong. Daniel describes the goals and context of the conference in our Q+A with him below. Registration and additional information available here..

Core77: Tell us about this new event.

Daniel Szuc: UX Hong Kong 2011 will be held at the Innocenter in Kowloon Tong (Hong Kong) on Friday 18 Feb 2011. The program has been deliberately designed to be intimate and give attendees plenty of opportunity to talk with other people and get one on one time with the invited speakers, including Steve Baty and Janna DeVyler on UX strategy; Steve Portigal on design research, Rachel Hinman on mobile design, and Gerry Gaffney on the UX Toolkit.

Usability, Interaction Design and UX have been steadily maturing in Asia over the last 10 plus years so a major impetus is to give people who are passionate about UX a place to meet and to help raise the profile about UX in the region. To date, its been really encouraging to see registrations and interest come in from Australia, the UK, mainland China, Singapore and Taiwan to name a few. On the day after the conference the fun continues as we all plan to go out and experience Hong Kong with the speakers including the harbour, a ferry ride, walking the streets, a dim sum and perhaps a visit to the Big Buddah on Lantau island (weather allowing) so we get out of the confines of the conference facility.

Dirty Baby

Painting, jazz and poetry in a trialogue between David Breskin, Nels Cline and Ed Ruscha
dirtybirdintro.jpg

Dirty Baby,” a music project joining guitarist and composer Nels Cline (of Wilco fame) and poet David Breskin, “recontextualizes” American artist Ed Ruscha’s “censor strips” (artworks that depict the black marks used to censor documents). The resulting album and art book represents an aural and visual conversation between the three men and a load of talented musicians.

dirtybird2.jpg

Dirty Baby the album drops 12 October 2010, but people in L.A. will be treated to a spectacular release party on 7 October 2010 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as part of the Angel City Jazz Festival. Cline will perform, Breskin will recite poems Ruscha will project images, and after the concert all three will sign the beautifully-packaged “Dirty Baby” CD and
art book of the same name (published by Prestel).

dirtybird3.jpg dirtybird4.jpg

The book, the size and shape of an LP, pairs gorgeous reproductions of Ruscha’s images with Breskin’s ghazals (a tightly-structured, ancient Arabic form) and includes the four-CD set, two of which are the slow, twangy Jazz improvisations by Cline. (You can order the book from
Amazon
or Prestel.)

dirtybird6.jpg dirtybird5.jpg

The L.A. show will be held at LACMA’s Bing Theater, and while admission to the event is free it’s highly recommended to RSVP to info [at] angelcityjazz [dot] com.
