Pigeons go guerilla for Pop Up Lisbon

popupsticker1.jpg

Currently taking over the streets in the portuguese capital, Pop Up Lisbon 2010 is a fesitval of urban culture and creativity set to run on till mid-December.

Local studio Torke, the self-proclaimed “Boutique Guerilla Agency”, have been spattering the city with these delightful little stickers to promote the goings on. The concept follows that the festival will have as much impact on the city as the thousands of pigeons around Lisbon, the bird acting as something of a branding motif for the event.

Tangible Earth tonight at Cooper-Hewitt

If you’re in New York City tonight, don’t miss Bill’s Design Talk with Tangible Earth inventor Shinichi Takemura:

For the first time in the U.S., participants will be able to see and experience Tangible Earth – the first interactive digital globe. Professor Shinichi Takemura will demonstrate his magical multimedia project, presented on a massive glowing globe, that shows daylight and weather patterns in real time. The globe’s diameter is just over 4 feet and is 1/10 millionth scale of the planet. Professor Takemura spins it with his hands as he explains the meaning of the images, calling up a series of events and predictions about ocean currents, tsunamis, global warming, and earthquake patterns. This digital globe allows him to easily explain the complicated scientific data that he has assimilated, while giving viewers a holistic vision of the state of the planet.

Live from Hand-Eye Supply! – Chance Walte of Fearless Guitars

About the presentation:
Core77’s Hand-Eye Curiosity Club is pleased to host an evening with Chance Walte of Fearless Guitars. Chance is a seeker, questioner and tireless experimenter: for more than twenty years he has utilized guitars and basses as the tools to study organized sound. During this process he recorded modifications to the tuning, setup and construction of the instruments at his disposal, using the same three songs for control. In this way, he became very familiar with the variables involved in sculpting a tone.

Quotidian Product: Paris-New York, A Panel Discussion

Quotidian.jpg

If you’re in New York this Thursday, The New School is hosting a free panel discussion comparing the cultural differences and similarities between managing a design practice in New York and Paris.

This panel discussion will bring together four significant mid career product design studios, two based in Paris and two based in New York City. Each studio is known for meaningful and extraordinarily well crafted and detailed products, small firms who from a distance create things that may look everyday, but upon examination communicate subtle intelligence and uncommon sensitivity to our daily experience.

Paris and New York share histories of liberty, luxury, poverty, immigration, and national identity. Through the lens of their respective metropolis, the panelists will explore cultural difference and likeness through a series of questions on themes including the modernist promise, the disappearing middle class, future thinking and daily practice.

Panelists include:
Jean-Francois Dingjian + Eloi Chafai (Normal Studio)
Francois Azambourg (Francois Azambourg Works)
Sigi Moeslinger + Masamichi Udagawa (Antenna Design)
Jeff Miller (Jeff Miller Design)

Moderator: Rama Chorpash (director of Product Design, Parsons The New School for Design)

Design Interpreter: Laetitia Wolff (Future Flair)

Quotidian Product: Paris-New York, A Panel Discussion
Thursday Nov. 18th. 6-8pm
Wollman Hall, Eugene Lang Building
65 West 11th Street, 5th floor
(enter at 66 West 12th Street)
Admission: free (Seating is limited)

As a perfect primer, checkout Parisian designer Vahram’s “Paris versus New York, a tally of two cities” series that did the rounds last month.

Around the Design World in 180 Words: West Coast Edition

Today’s design world roundup is a little less global but no less newsy. Settle in for 180 words worth of developments from the left coast:

  • Get ready for Google’s big fashion push. On Wednesday, the search giant will unveil a new online shopping initiative. The website and stable of online boutiques—which sounds to us like a bigger, better, branded version of Google Shopping—will allow anyone to create and share a personalized shop, according to WWD.
  • On Thursday, the Pacific Design Center kicks off Design Loves Art, a program that provides project space for artists, curators, and galleries. Don’t miss the new, post-smock incarnation of Andrea Zittel’s artist-run enterprise, which will offer up a range of panel-based items. Come again? “These rectangular products contract and expand, morphing from single surfaces to fully functional objects,” explains Zittel. More Design Loves Art details are here.

  • Over in Pasadena, the Art Center College of Design has appointed Fred Fehlau to the position of provost. An Art Center alum and working graphic designer, Fehlau has served as a professor and taken on a series of administrative roles, including interim chair of the graphic design department, chair of the senior education committee, and dean of academic affairs.

  • Design Museum Boston’s "Creative Capital" Exhibit

    2.jpg

We’ve been following Design Museum Boston’s progress since their first kick off fund raiser earlier this year and through their open source branding process with Design Continuum. The group’s first installation is “Creative Capital: Designed in Boston”, done in partnership with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, AIR Graphics and VDA Productions. The exhibit displays publicly recognizable work done by Boston designers across a variety of disciplines like the work done by ELEVEN for OXO and Korn Design’s rebranding of the Boston Ballet. Utilizing QR code technology, the exhibit will continually deliver new content throughout the year.

Stop by and take a look. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and can be viewed on the 9th floor of Boston City Hall weekdays between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

    Friday Photo: Living Landmarks

New York Landmarks Conservancy honorees Graydon Carter, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, Larry Silverstein, Bunny Williams, Jonathan M. Tisch, and Howard Dodson with gala co-chair Liz Smith (Photos: Ben Gebbe/Patrick McMullan)

Renowned interior designer Bunny Williams was among the honorees at this year’s New York Landmarks Conservancy Living Landmarks Celebration, held earlier this month at the Plaza Hotel. The annual celebration recognizes New Yorkers who have made outstanding contributions to the City. Joining Williams on the dais to accept their awards and offer heartfelt (and occasionally musical) tributes to New York and its landmarked buildings were Vanity Fair editor-in-chief and restauranteur Graydon Carter; real estate developer Larry Silverstein; actor, author, producer, and philanthropist Marlo Thomas and her talk show icon husband Phil Donahue; Loews Hotels Chairman and CEO Jonathan M. Tisch; and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Director Howard Dodson, who received the Lew Rudin Living Landmark Award for Public Service. Hosted by New York Landmarks Conservancy president Peg Breen and Conservancy board chair Stuart Siegel, the event drew approximately 400 guests and raised just over $800,000, a twenty percent increase from last year’s $640,000 tally. Meanwhile, Williams is not one to rest on her laurels. She’s been busy as a bee (her signature insect) creating buzz around her new book, A Scrapbook for Living (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), a room-by-room approach to creative and practical interiors. And, of course, she’s on Twitter.
