Tweed Run, London January 24th 2009

The first Tweed Run took place in London recently with about 150 cyclists wearing tweeds and the like. A veritable Gentleman’s Whiskey and Chat on two wheels. We need to bring this stateside. Any takers?

Cologne Design Festival 2009: IMM: Atelier van Lieshout

VanLieshout_2.jpg

This year the IMM Cologne made the attempt to bridge between fine arts and interior design and therefore invited Rotterdam based Atelier van Lieshout – a wanderer between the worlds of art and design. A broad overview of Joep van Lieshouts work is presented, containing plans, drawings, sculptures and installations from the early 80s to contemporary works. A successful exhibition that really sticks out, appearing unexpectedly between the predominantly slick furniture in the fair – more of it, please!

Cologne Design Festival 2009: Passagen: Global Street Food

GlobalStreetFood 8 small.jpg

A very intriguing exhibition of the Cologne Passagen was Mike Mike Meires “Global Street Food”, showing a great number of various street kitchens from all over the world which were researched and purchased over more than one year. “Complex minimalisation makes it possible to think about other processes” describes Meire his fascination with street food kitchens. Pictured above: street food stands from the United States and China.

After The Farm Project, Global Street Food is Mike Meires current installation for the Dornbracht Edges series of exhibitions. In contrast to The Farm Project, this new project is not about the domestic kitchen as the stage of life; it is about improvised kitchens set up in public spaces – in and on the streets.

A beautiful oasis of authenticity in the middle of the glossy design world wonderland and a great location to become aware of what kind of kitchen one really needs for one’s respective lifestyle.

Humans, Wow

Two weeks until Interaction ’09!

Interaction-09B.jpg

Interaction Design continues to be a mysteriously fascinating field to many of us: crucially sought after by companies all over the world, but difficult to pin down; and, dare we say, recession-proof? While hit by the slipping economy along with the rest of the creative job market, IxD seems to be weathering things a bit better, though perhaps not as scorchingly as last year, when the first ever IxDA-sponsored conference Interaction ’08 hit Savannah, Georgia, to a sold-out crowd from across the globe. Core’s coverage of the event, which included talks from luminaries like Bill Buxton of IDEO, Apple and Microsoft fame, and Sigi Moeslinger from Antenna Design, is here.

Interaction ’09
, which starts February 5 in Vancouver, BC, still has some slots open, and looks to be a similarly vibrant affair, with an equally impressive all-star cast of speakers. Dan Saffer of Kicker Studios, who wowed us at User Research Friday a few months back, will be delivering a keynote, as will John Thackara of Doors of Perception fame, who has earned near legendary status here at Core for constantly saying interesting things at just the right time (and curating the Eco City Lab at Saint Etienne last year, among other things). We’re also looking forward to hearing from frequent Core-contributor Steve Portigal, and IxDA co-founder David Malouf, whose IxD-defining article in the lead-up to last year’s conference is here.

For those who can’t make it in real life, Core77 will be there with live blog and video coverage, and for those who can, the Coroflot Job Board will once again be in full effect.

Cologne Design Festival 2009: IMM Passagen

CologneFairPost_1.jpg

This week the international design posse is gathering at the Cologne International Design Festival in Germany. It consists of two main (unfortunately competing rather than collaborating) events: The IMM Furniture Show and the Passagen – a show program with a great number of exhibitions in galleries, show rooms, bars and shops across the city.

Shown above are from left to right the unique sideboard by Schub Laden Moebelunikate (made from individual found vintage drawers), Ontwerpduo’s “What it is it isn’t” shelf, playing with the viewers perception (you can look through a provided lens which makes it look all straight) and Kim Ha-Yan’s dinner table for singles.

These are the concrete “Trabant” lights by Tecnolumen, a table by an un-named student of the Fachakademie fuer Raum- und Objektdesign Cham, the beautifully lit hallway of the Koeln International School of Design as well as the “Schwarzlicht Bar” (both part of the students’ project “Time Machine”) and the “Pit Green” Micro-Golf player – a little adult golf toy, inspired by Tip-Kick. On Sunday there will be the Micro-Golf Worldcup, taking place in the fair hall 3.1.

Manifest Hope: DC celebrates the visual art that supported President-Elect Barack Obama’s campaign. Broken into 3 themes; health care reform. worker’s right’s, and the green economy, the exhibition brings together work from a diverse range of artists. Notcot published a great collection of photos from the exhibition which unfortunately was only open to the public for a couple of days (it closes today).

Greener Gadgets Design Competition Flashback: WASHUP

gg_flashback_washup.jpg

ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT TO ENTER THIS YEAR’S COMPETITION!

For some last minute inspiration enjoy this highlight from last year’s Greener Gadget Competition: WASHUP.

“Wasup” is a conceptual design integrating washing machine with toilette-flush. It suggests a sustainable water consumption by storing the wasted water in toilette-flush tank and reuse it with flushing. Moreover, “washup” brings a solution for the problem of location of washing machines in small bathrooms, overlapping washing machine usage space with toilette usage space. It is fixed on wall upwards toilette, so that loading of clothes would be easier for the user without bending or crouching. A special interface including three semi-sphere control units & two flushing buttons is designed for a practical usage of the product. “Washup” is a green product offering solutions for the problems of standard washing machines.

Inspired by this design? Register now, fire up those rendering tools, and enter this year’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition! Remember that top entries will be online for public voting, and the top 10 finalists entries will be judged LIVE at the Greener Gadgets Design Conference.

REGISTER FOR THIS YEAR’S COMPETITION!
DEADLINE: JAN. 18th, 2009.

Design Public’s Organization Blog Fest

The website Design Public is hosting an Organization Blog Fest for a week and a little more this January. Each day is a new post with tips, tricks, and advice on how to help you organize your life. So far, the series has been well written, and I recommend you check it out.

Unclutterer was asked to contribute to the advice-wielding group, and my post “Outfitting a Minimalist Kitchen” ran last Thursday. I’m interested in hearing from you what you think about the list of minimalist food preparation utensils. Leave a comment expressing your ideas either here or on Design Public — I’ll be checking both places to see what you think.

January is Get Organized Month

Also, Amazon.com is interested in helping you get organized in January. They have created a Top 10 New Year’s Resolution page that includes “#9: Organize and Optimize” with a number of good deals on storage solutions and organizing books.

Do you have plans to get organized in January? Let us know about your plans in the comments. You can help inspire all of us.
