Michelle Obamas National Design Awards Speech

By all reports, Friday’s National Design Awards luncheon with Michelle Obama went over really well (no word yet if Tom Dair got to say anything smart). As we said last week, we’re hoping to have all of the official Cooper-Hewitt group photos to share with you soon (and a rep from the museum recently told us that they’re coming sometime this week). In the interim, here’s video of the First Lady’s design-focused speech:

Coaster Break with IDSA Chicago

idsacoasterbreak.jpg

We’re excited to announce that IDSA Chicago is hosting Coaster Break, a bike-riding and sketch competition event, this Friday, July 31st:

IDSA will be joining Chicago’s Critical Mass. Please ride your bikes to Daley Plaza (look for the pink flamingo noodle), where we will meet and ride as one group throughout the streets of Chicago, cruising on our two-wheelers and reliving those exciting parade moments from our childhood days.

But showing off your riding skills is only half the fun! Following the ride, we will head over to The Blind Robin, for a sketch competition on white drink coasters. Prizes will be awarded to those who exemplify design talent in various categories.

Coaster Break with IDSA Chicago
Friday, July 31, 2009
5:30pm, rain or shine
Daley Plaza, Dearborn & Washington, Chicago.

At Comic-Con, Chip Kidd Finds Batman, Syphilis

batmanga.jpgHave the maddening, costumed crowds and inevitable internecine Star Wars/Trek-related feuds kept you from Comic-Con this year? Fear not, because Chip Kidd is on the scene! The designer (and comics expert) patrolled the convention floor yesterday with an eye to all things Batman and was not disappointed. Posted to Kidd’s online journal are photos of several new Batman statues, including a black-and-white likeness of the caped crusader waiting for a bus (or perhaps for chatty Robin to get off the Batphone), as well as several Bat-vehicles: your classic Bat-cycle with side car, your Bat-Pod. And like so many trips to Comic-Con, Kidd’s ended in venereal disease: at a booth chock full of German expressionist posters, he spotted this one that memorably conveys upticks in syphilis and gonorrhea in 1946 with the help of a slimy proto-sleestak.

  • Help Smart Designs Tom Dair Come Up with Something Smart to Say to Michelle Obama

    0722smartdair.jpg

Just a couple of days ago, we told you about Friday’s upcoming meet and greet at the White House for the annual National Design Awards lunch with the First Lady. Tom Dair, president of the firm Smart Design, has been to the event before, meeting with Laura Bush a few years ago. But now, as luck would have it, he’s headed back, with Smart taking home a prize in the product design category. But before Dair leaves for the White House, he wants to be prepared should he wind up finding himself talking to Michelle Obama. So he’s opened up the floor over at Fast Company and has requested that people send in what they think is the most important message about design he can quickly convey to this very design-focused First Lady. As of this writing, there are only a handful of comments sent in to Dair, so should you have something really solid, maybe here’s your chance to get something transported from your brain to Michelle Obamas, using Tom Dair as your vessel (wow, was that ever a strange sentence).

World Design Capital 2012 shortlisted cities announced

    wdc2012.jpg

Following deliberations on 17 July 2009, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) announced on behalf of the members of the World Design Capital Jury that the City of Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and the City of Helsinki (Finland) have been selected for the shortlist of cities that will move on to the next round of evaluation in the hopes of becoming World Design Capital (WDC) in 2012.

The evaluation for the WDC designation is founded on a comprehensive assessment process spanning a five-month review and deliberation period, during which time, applicants were requested to demonstrate evidence of their strengths in the following areas: Design, Programming, Infrastructure and Financing.

The final jury deliberation will take place in September 2009 in Montreal, Canada, and the official announcement of the WDC 2012 designated city will occur during the ICSID World Design Congress in Singapore on 25 November 2009.

    Design Research Conference – Oct. 1-2, 2009

    DRC_ID_web_horiz_date.gif

This year we’re proud to be a media sponsor for the Design Research Conference (formerly known as About, With and For), hosted by IIT Institute of Design in Chicago. The two-day event runs over Oct. 1 & 2, and features a list of great speakers (you’ll note a few Core contributors!) along with a number of hands-on workshops. The event focuses on Design Research, of course, and in addition to the workshops will be more participatory than previous installments, with student presentations, twenty-minute lightning round TED style talks, and other group activities and networking opportunities.

The early-bird registration discount ends on July 30, so hurry up to save almost 1/2 off the full price. Check the Google map of destinations and attractions surrounding the conference that they’ve set up. You can spend two days just enjoying downtown Chicago!

    John Maeda IDSA Webinar

    maeda_mouse.jpg

Forgoing his own lunch break, John Maeda just took a short hour to serve up a tasty webinar for the IDSA’s Designer Spotlight Series. Addressing the challenge of “Open Source Administration”, Maeda expounded on his philosophies of humanizing technology through social medias, specifically focusing on his own efforts to create more communal and creative networks in his present role as president of RSID. If you could get past the microphone echo, Maeda’s talk, as usual, was perfectly simple, refreshing and human. Reminding us that “electrons move at the speed of light, [people] don’t”, he touched on his implementation of internal blogs and digital message boards for the RSID community, the importance of finding “authenticity” within large organizations, and the realization that he had evolved from a “CEO” to a “moderator” at RSID. The whole thing rang true with evidence-of-community-makes-humans-happy speak and we’re thrilled to see someone finally bringing design schools into the 21st century. The tab for digging into this Spotlight hour can be a bit steep ($70-$85), but it sure beats listening to waitresses complain about their kids. Check out the full listing here.

And yes, we did do a screen shot of JM’s presentation from a tiny laptop so it’s a bit rough around the edges. And yes, that is Maeda’s very own LIVE mouse arrow in the top left corner.

    Field Trip: Vancouver!

I’m looking forward to a quick trip to Vancouver this Thursday-Sunday. I haven’t been in so many years (since before I opened UPPERCASE!) and it is at long last that I will be able to experience the magic of The Regional Assembly of Text in person. Brandy and Rebecca have graciously allowed me to host a little UPPERCASE magazine meet & greet. Please stop by this Saturday from 4-6pm for refreshments, magazines, books and a few other goodies. I’ll have copies of issue 2 on hand as well.

White House and Cooper-Hewitt Kick Off Mini-Arts Week, Ending with Annual National Design Awards Luncheon with Michelle Obama

    0720ndawhite.jpg

It’s that time of year again, for the annual National Design Awards luncheon at the White House, now with an all new First Lady at the helm. Following a couple of years of issues some designers had with the Bush presidency, we’re expecting none of the same troublesome excitement this year, now with Michelle Obama running this Friday’s luncheon (if the Cooper-Hewitt‘s PR people are kind enough to do so again this year, we’ll likely have photos of the even for you next Monday). What’s more, the White House and the Cooper-Hewitt have decided to spend this whole week building up to the annual get-together of award winners by celebrating arts and innovation in a variety of programs Monday through Friday (Tuesday being the most high profile, as it’ll be something of a “Country Music with the White House” day). But more pertinent to our interests, Friday will find a number of galleries and museums throughout the DC area holding design-related programming. Unfortunately, each of these will take place from 10am to 11am in five different locations throughout town, so unless you can be everywhere at once, you’ll have to pick which one you’ll want to go to.
