Singapore’s new tech-and-design university to get a heavy dose of design thinking

Singapore’s newly-formed University of Technology and Design has appointed Thomas Magnanti (the former head of MIT’s Department of Engineering) as its new president, and Magnanti is pushing a “design thinking”-centered agenda.

[SUTD] is offering degrees in architecture and sustainable design, engineering product design, engineering systems and system design and information engineering and design.

The word ‘design’ keeps appearing for a reason. Design as an academic discipline will be infused and stressed in all the courses, Prof Magnanti says. Students will be part of a multi-disciplinary team given projects to design a product or a system. They will use design processes such as identifying the end users and profiling them, understanding their needs for a product or service, building a prototype and then testing it with the end users for feedback, and then going back to enhance it further.

‘With training in design thinking, an engineer or architect will be able to bring together his creativity, imagination and technical knowledge to create products or systems that satisfy human needs,’ he says.

In the new economy, he adds, design thinking is hugely important. ‘Let me use an obvious example. Why is everyone crazy about Apple products? Because they look good, they work well, they have enabled people to discover new uses for their phone or portable music player such as the iPod. ‘In a knowledge economy it is these kinds of products that will sell – ones that satisfy customers’ needs and enhance their experience of using it.’

Get to Know SVAs D-Crit Program

dcrit.gifHere’s your chance to get the scoop on the graduate program that we can’t stop talking about. This Saturday, November 7, the School of Visual Arts’ Design Criticism department will host an afternoon of presentations and informal discussion about its MFA in Design Criticism, better known by its rapper name, D-Crit. Students will talk about their experiences so far, D-Crit chairperson Alice Twemlow will provide a program overview, and faculty members Akiko Busch, Andrea Codrington, Steven Heller, and Phil Patton will discuss the courses they teach. We hear that there will be drinks (mimosas!) and snacks (doughnuts!), and if you ask nicely, we suspect they’ll let you peruse the twelve-volume reprint set of Domus that we spied in one of the D-Crit classrooms on a recent visit. Get all of the details here. Can’t make the open house? Click “continued…” for a look at the remaining events in the department’s stellar fall lecture series.

Graduating Architecture Students Face Less Than 50% Chance at Employment

0908archdown.jpg

The signs have really been there from the beginning, so this should really come as no surprise. Despite an influx of out of work students returning to school to receive various degrees in architecture, there have been questions over whether this is such a good idea, horribly gloomy reports from those inside university programs about future prospects, and even schools themselves telling students to scram for a year. And just a view of the industry itself these past couple of years doesn’t paint a very rosy picture at all either. So when the Higher Education Career Services organization in the UK announces that a study has found that less than 50% of graduating architecture students are finding jobs, it isn’t very revelatory. But it certainly doesn’t make it any less unfortunate. Here’s a bit:

Mike Hill, chief executive of HECSU, said: “We’re now starting to see the extent of the impact the recession has had on graduate employment.

“Any signs of economic recovery may not be reflected in the destinations of new graduates until the 2010 graduating cohort. In fact it’s likely that unemployment for 2009 graduates may be even higher than that reported here.”
