DIY Accessory – Embellished Oxfords

imageHere at Stylehive, we’re loving the preppy oxford trend that’s been spotted on ‘It’ girls everywhere!
Here’s a fun and stylish way to spice up these old school kicks with a little glitz and glam in the form of rhinestones. Yup, we said it! Rhinestones are back … and we love them!

Big name design houses like Miu Miu and Christian Louboutin have created similar embellished styles, inspiring us to dig through our old crafts drawer and get our bedazzle on!

Here’s what you’ll need

– Rhinestones (color of your choice – Classic clear looks great with everything, black gems look spectacular against white, black or dark hues or opt for a fun color for a truly unique look!)
– E-6000 industrial strength adhesive
– a pencil
– 2 sheets of newspaper
– Your favorite pair of oxfords (we’re adding the pizazz back to an old pair of jazz shoes!)

Step 1 – Crumple the newspaper into two small balls and stuff your shoes.

Step 2 – Using your pencil, mark a dotted pattern where you will glue the crystals.

Step 3 – Add a thin line or small dot of glue and carefully place rhinestones to marked spots

Step 4 – Repeat this step until your oxford shoes are covered in the desired design!

Beauty DIY – The Headband Braid

image

If you’ve followed recent celeb hair trends, you’ve probably come across the headband braid. Stars such as Ashley Olsen, Jessica Alba, and Sienna Miller have all rocked this infamous up do.

It’s feminine and sweet while keeping hair out of your face and can be worn as a casual style or with a dressier look. Try this quick hair fix that’s a great style for an after work date! No blow dryer? No problem! Try this daring ‘do that looks especially great with some ruby red lips!

The greatest thing about this chic coif is that you won’t need to see a stylist! You can do it yourself with some simple supplies you already have laying around!

Here’s what you’ll need

Between 3-5 bobby pins depending on the thickness of your hair, strong-hold hairspray, and a hair band.

Step 1 – Part hair in the center of your head and make two braids, one on either side. (Think Pippi Longstocking!)

Step 2 – Tie the bottom of one braid and hold the other.

Step 3 – Take the braid you are holding and bring it up around the top of your head, just behind your forehead, and secure the end down with bobby pins.

Step 4 – Repeat the last step, by placing one braid next to the other so that it slightly overlaps the bobby pins, and conceals them. Pin this braid down and put the pins in so that they fit beneath the second braid.

Step 5 – Spray your braided headdress generously with an extra strength hold spray. This will prevent it from falling apart while you’re on the dance floor!

By simply sticking the needle and thread through the card, you can easily relay where you’ve been or hope to go, as a souvenir to yourself or someone special.

Print Workshop: Hand-Printing Techniques and Truly Original Projects

Get crafty with a new book by San Francisco’s leading lady of printmaking
printworkshop1.jpg

Founder of San Francisco, CA design studio Yellow Owl Workshop, crafty woman Christine Schmidt knows her print-making. Her new book, “Print Workshop: Hand Printing Techniques and Truly Original Projects,” embodies her icon status as a hand-printer while offering artistic recipes for other creative-minded souls.

The book, billed as a tool for “low budgets and high expectations,” offers a variety of printing guides that are a serious attraction to someone who has spent years secretly fantasizing about printing subversive t-shirts in his basement, like me. From relief to sun printing, Schmidt covers a range of fun and creative tasks that can be tackled in a weekend or drawn out into long-term projects.

While the range of projects is impressive, the real beauty of the book is its comprehensive nature. Each section begins with a description of the specific tools necessary for each topic, followed by straightforward directions on execution. Schmidt offers an immense amount of details for all the different categories, and the utility of having a single-source of tried-and-true design at your fingertips is invaluable.

Schmidt’s language is casually encouraging, and in true DIY spirit every paragraph makes you feel more confident in your ability to complete the task at hand. While the book won’t tell you how to rubber stamp the Mona Lisa, it’s an excellent launching pad for imaginative minds.

As a bonus the last 15 pages are a collection of templates from the Yellow Owl Workshop that you can use for inspiration. The book comes out 28 December 2010 but can be pre-ordered from Amazon or directly from Crown Publishing.

DIY Trend – Cut-Out Shoulder Tops

imageCut-out shoulders are so popular right now, because they add a touch of flare to any plain shirt. This Stylehive DIY project was a real collaboration, putting our teams effort into sewing, styling, and of course modeling. We all agree that shoulders have definitely become the new cleavage, so spice things up this winter season, by switching out your short sleeves with a shoulderless button down!

Check out this tasteful trick that comes in a variety of different styles and is so easy to do!

Step 1 – Trace and cut your desired size holes around the ball of your shoulders.

Step 2 – Fold edges inward at approximately a quarter inch. Sew this edge down with loose stitches to keep the fabric from fraying. (Giving the quarter inch edge a quick press of the iron helps keep the edge down and makes it easier to sew!)

Next time you’re cleaning out your closet or thrifting at your favorite second hand shop, consider giving your threads a facelift from the Stylehive doctors that guarantee a quick recovery!
