Project Room Preparations

Last week I opened The UPPERCASE Project Room, a space in Art Central’s Art Loop on the lower level. It is a “mini warehouse” to store all the boxes of our publications and projects, and the other half is a space available for creative projects.

I wanted to adorn the wall of the room with some lettering, so I had some fun with these peel and stick letters I bought a few years ago from a dollar store clear-out sale. Many letters were missing, so I created the missing letterforms by cutting up numbers and extra “donor” letters.

The first activity in The Project Room was complimentary button-making last First Thursday evening. More details about renting the space and equipment will be posted in the next couple weeks (first on my to-do list is get issue 2 finished and off to print in mere days!)

Better Homes Gardens

The UPPERCASE tote bags have made their way into Better Homes & Gardens this month! Heather Lin‘s Eye Chart pillows are also featured. We’ve waited a long time for this article to be published… perhaps a year since I was first contacted? {Thank you to Heather for advertising in the launch issue.}

Natalie Gerber

Similar in spirit to my Eclecto notebooks, Natalie Gerber‘s unique purses, clutches and apparel use vintage and reclaimed fabrics.

“In a society of consumers where low cost, mass-market companies thrive to produce cheap, fast fashion, Natalie Gerber exemplifies eco-chic in her accessories, apparel and homewares made in Canada from reclaimed (recycled) materials and aged souvenirs. By using reclaimed materials she infuses sustainability into all her products from the start and through keeping the production local she lessens the carbon footprint of the company with lower transportation needs. Furthermore, with local production Natalie Gerber can ensure that her products are made sweat-shop free, in a healthy and fair working environment.”

Her products are beautiful and useful, well-made and one-of-a-kind. {available in her online boutique and in Collage Gallery, Art Central}

Still stitching

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and wind and made it out to the s-t-i-t-c-h show last night. Many cute softies were adopted into loving homes. Since all of our artists were so prolific, there is still plenty left to see in this lovely show, so we’re extending it through next week.

View the set on Flickr. If you see something that you’d like, please inquire via email.

s-t-i-t-c-h opens tomorrow

Art and craft: sewn, crocheted, knitted, embroidered, adorned

We are a presenting a one-day show called Stitch which features the handiwork of many local and Canadian craftsters. The amount of effort that our participants have dedicated in making their pieces is quite remarkable. I am sure that you’ll fall in love with one of the softies, the exquisite embroidery, beautiful linens and illustrative sewn collages. You can take your purchases home with you immediately since this is a one-day show. (Sorry, this show is in the physical gallery only.)

Paper Boats

On the 30th January 2009, Joanne B Kaar and Lynn Taylor launched their paper boat project — a fundraiser for Mary-Ann’s cottage, a living history museum in Caithness Scotland run by volunteers. As paper boats are sent to Joanne from around the globe, she will document them on her blog.
