Renegade SF: my fellow Canadians

My highlight was meeting fellow Canadian Heather Braun-Dahl. I’ve admired her work from afar in her Etsy and in UPPERCASE stockist Room 6. I really enjoyed chatting with Heather and hope to feature her in a future issue of the magazine. Thank you, Heather, for your generosity!

Two other Canadian ceramicists who bravely brought their wares all the way to San Francisco are Grace Lee of Eikcam Design

…and Claire Madill of Heyday Design. The logistics of transporting magazines is enough of a challenge—I can’t imagine the stress of shipping or travelling with breakables.

Lovely work all round. So much to covet.

Present & Correct

Present & Correct always stocks interesting things in their shop. They have some advent stencils that they have made (“Each day has its own laser cut wood stencil, they are all different, and come with a dated pack of crayons”), some designerly Christmas crackers, plus these vintage ribbons and holiday wrapping paper.

Type Tuesday: Tangier

New from the Font Bureau: “With Tangier, Richard Lipton continues to explore the possibilities of the elegant Spencerian form in its infinite variety. Inspired by lettering on a catalog cover, Lipton developed this lively series, exuberant yet disciplined, with a black weight that pushes the boundaries for contrast in a script.” Gorgeous! I want it.

Gorgeous! Upon a Fold

A reader in Australia sent me a link to this amazing webshop, Upon a Fold, dedicated to the art of folded paper. It is such a beautiful website with a smart and inspiring selection of products, plus a great blog.

Owner/designer Justine writes: “I live in Sydney, Australia, and this paper store and blog is something I’ve wanted to embark on since I was a kid. And now that I’m all grown up I finally have a place where I can gleefully revel in my passion for paper and then share all my new finds with you!

I’ve been collecting and making things with paper for as long as I can remember. When I’m not working as a graphic designer, I’m still busy cutting, folding and finding inspiration from other paper shapers, artists and engineers. Whenever I come across a beautiful object made of paper I wish I had a place to put it on show for all to see and enjoy. So, ta-da, here it is… Upon a Fold.”

Super!

Type Tuesday: Typewriter tins prints!

Leanda of One Little Bird has been creating these beautiful reproduction of tins from my typewriter ribbon tin collection. (You really have to see them large on flickr to appreciate the subtle textures and background patterns.) They’re also available as prints right here.

More love

Lisa Congdon has a new print at 20×200.

Book Book

This laptop case disguised as a vintage book has caught my eye! What a clever and well-executed idea.

Merry Mukluks!

My other big gifting tip of the season is mukluks! A little slice of Canada to warm your loved one’s feet in winter.

If you are in town you can find them at the Calgary Farmer’s Market but if you are far away, check this site for Authentic Canadian Mukluks.

Orange Beautiful (and smart, too!)

Emily and Laura of Orange Beautiful have created a lovely and clever perpetual calendar design for 2010 and beyond. I really like the three-tier design and paper stand. Available now in their Etsy shop.

Covet: Flair

I hope to see this book in person some day! {via Aqua-Velvet}
