The Simple Cellphone

Here is another vintage look at what cellphones can grow to become. Yes, transparent screens are a must and so is the passion for expansive displays. With Google Glasses and other such innovative tech coming around the bend, we have to pause and rethink our perception of communication. Maybe the future of phones will no longer be a candy bar or clamshells. What do you think?

iPicture With iLens

As far as Apple is concerned there are many ‘what ifs’ that we all would like them to answer. Example, what if Apple made a watch, what if Apple made a camera? The answer to the latter is the iLens; an imaginable innovation that is conceived as a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera for enthusiastic photographers. So if you are dangling between an amateur and professional photographer, this camera is for you!

Concept explanation:

Dual lens system on the iLens provides you with an option to click with the 50mm prime lens on the main device. Magnetically attachable zoom and telephoto lens give you more dynamic photography options. The magnetically attachable lens sits on top of the primary device lens, which is the 50mm prime lens. The lens and the device communicate to each other via NFC Standard. Gesture sensitive lens casing provide with lens zoom and focus manipulation. Also, an integrated ring type flash unit around the lens casing avoids any shadow cast by the lens. This makes the iLens a powerful camera with a full size image sensor that is genuinely pocket-able. The cubical design for the lens casing, instead of the traditional and a much familiar cylindrical design, was taken into consideration for ease of storage. As DSLR lens do roll away, if handled carelessly. Unlike a DSLR, the image sensor is sealed behind the 50mm prime lens, so there is no chance of sensor dust damage during lens changes. A scratch resistant UV filter tops the lens, so there is no need for a lens cap.

Nooka With A ZIG

Besides its stunning geometric looks, the Nooka ZIG has one of the most practical elements that this digital era requires. The concept is the perfect marriage of a digital watch with USB, redefining portability and interaction. While the designer aspires to bring back the physical human interaction that is often lost with technology, I think the watch just takes us a step closer to the surreal world.

Retro Analogue Photography In Digital Era

When they were asked to rethink the camera by BBC Future, the designers at Conran and Partners were clear that they wanted to set about reimagining every aspect, from the form factor to the technology inside. The result is this new-age hybrid that has a gaping hole replacing the camera lens and no digital viewfinder to check out the images clicked. In a very spunky way, the concept transports us back to that era when rushing to the darkroom with the camera roll used to be so much of fun. The anticipation of crisp versus blurry shots, and the excitement of sifting through the photographs as a collection, is such a refreshing change.

Designer Jared Mankelow explains, “What we’ve done is punch a big aperture through the camera’s centre, to connect the photographer with what’s in front of them.”

One of the reasons behind omitting the screen is that since everybody has a smartphone, tablet or PC nowadays (all featuring a very high-resolution screen), it made no sense having a poor-quality substitute sapping battery life from the camera.

  • The Conran camera transmits images via Bluetooth with the touch of a button – or you can recapture the delight of a film camera by not looking.
  • From a control perspective, the Conran camera combines instant-on, automatic shooting with a full set of manual controls.
  • Instead of being buried in fiddly, screen-based menus, all of the controls are physical: grooves, knurls and ridges allow the user to change settings without looking.
  • Image quality was another important focus. The camera sensors surround the central aperture in an array, allowing the camera to resolve images with incredible clarity – and a ring flash allows even lighting of close up subjects.

Accommodating Strip

You can only understand the value of a good power strip when you own too many devices. I am literally joined to the hip with my iPad, iPhone and camera on any given day. So a good power strip that can accommodate the various charger heads is a welcome design. The Modular Power Strip Concept is a step in this direction and I think someone should make it now!

The concept aims at providing us with a versatile power strip that can be expanded as well as easily accepts large power receptacles that typically can cover other outlets. Have a look at the video here for more details.
