Retro Analogue Photography In Digital Era

When they were asked to rethink the camera by BBC Future, the designers at Conran and Partners were clear that they wanted to set about reimagining every aspect, from the form factor to the technology inside. The result is this new-age hybrid that has a gaping hole replacing the camera lens and no digital viewfinder to check out the images clicked. In a very spunky way, the concept transports us back to that era when rushing to the darkroom with the camera roll used to be so much of fun. The anticipation of crisp versus blurry shots, and the excitement of sifting through the photographs as a collection, is such a refreshing change.

Designer Jared Mankelow explains, “What we’ve done is punch a big aperture through the camera’s centre, to connect the photographer with what’s in front of them.”

One of the reasons behind omitting the screen is that since everybody has a smartphone, tablet or PC nowadays (all featuring a very high-resolution screen), it made no sense having a poor-quality substitute sapping battery life from the camera.

  • The Conran camera transmits images via Bluetooth with the touch of a button – or you can recapture the delight of a film camera by not looking.
  • From a control perspective, the Conran camera combines instant-on, automatic shooting with a full set of manual controls.
  • Instead of being buried in fiddly, screen-based menus, all of the controls are physical: grooves, knurls and ridges allow the user to change settings without looking.
  • Image quality was another important focus. The camera sensors surround the central aperture in an array, allowing the camera to resolve images with incredible clarity – and a ring flash allows even lighting of close up subjects.

Kitsch Dress Your Camera

The Spectrum Camera Concept is high on the novelty quotient and very low on functionality. However if we keep our minds open, I see us using the idea of a customizable wrap-around flexible display in more innovative ways. Just the other day we heard of an Apple patent that employed a similar idea, where the display went wrap-around the phone. This can turn into something big, what do you think?

LECIA Only Gets Better

Inspired by the monocle and the color wheel, this LEICA X3 concept looks at picking the best features found on smartphones and marrying them with the ones found on a digital camera. So basically this is a lovechild that is the size of a lens and transfers the pictures instantly to your smartphone, tablet or Mac via Bluetooth. The camera is automatically turned on when the lens is flipped out and a simple user interface allows you take pictures in a jiffy.

Specs include both manual and automatic control for aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I like the direction of this concept; it aims at tapping into the future of photography and brings a totally new dimension to the modern habit of sharing pictures with the world.

Customizing The Camera Options

Equinox brings to life a new way of customizing cameras. Until now, different CCD parts were used repeatedly, every time we bought different cameras. With the EQUINOX we have a square Corepart with CCD and a lens mount. This aspect allows you can change parts on your own, transforming your gadget from a small compact to Professional high-end camera.

Users varying from general to professional photographers are able to function with ease. Depending on purpose, it can be suitable for journalists and wildlife photographers and there are adapters for indoor shot. Nowadays with advanced technology, Photograph and image software can take control of all processes of a camera in the Studio without the need of a camera body. To sum it up, all we need now with EQUINOX are CCD, lens and a cable adapter.

Simple Muji Camera

The Ka-mu-ra is a concept based on Kanketsu, the idea of simplicity. When the brief was given to designer Forrest Radford, to design a camera for Muji, the obvious loophole was that Muji isn’t a very tech-centric company. So his first reaction was to creatively push the brand forward from where it currently is. Simple to use, the camera is off when closed and on when opened.

  • Touch interfaces on both surfaces pick up gestures made by your fingers.
  • An accelerometer controls which surface picks up information so as not to cause a conflict of information.
  • This allows for a totally unique buttonless camera.
  • Specs include 8 megapixel camera, LCD flash, Lithium Ion battery, a CPU with 4GB built in flash memory and an accelerometer, a mini-b USB for charging and transfer of data, an LCD screen and a rotational switch.
  • The camera comes in two colors, black and white.
  • The outside cover is made of soft touch ABS and the internal body of white polycarbonate.

As the designer puts it, since most photos taken now are snapshot only a few controls are needed. And since most photos are now snapshots done with phone cameras it seems logical to put this technology to good use.

Photographing The Photographer

It is an everyday occurrence that you want to be included in the photograph with your family and friends, but end up being the photographer. The Not One Less is a concept that allows you to be in the picture. It has a dual lens, one that focuses on the main subjects and the other on the photographer. Superb idea, I hope Nikon or Canon is listening.

Not one less is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.
