Public bicycles made massively minimal

The folks at multidisciplinary office AND-RÉ and the city of Vilamoura worked to create the project you’re seeing here – a lovely public bicycle project! This project is just the newest of a set of collaborations the city has done with the design group known as AND-RÉ and aims to continue their forward-thinking philosophy of “humanization of urban space” – this “returning the city to [the] people.”

The aim of this project was to develop a bike system that encapsulated “truly democratic equipment … requiring a great accuracy in ergonomic study and in the visual/formal language in order to achieve a unisex non-discriminatory product.” The bike itself represents a “debugged” design, as they call it, bringing light and purity to the overall system. Vintage at the same time as it is modern, made to serve the function alone – transportation for the city.

Smarter Ride

The Smart City Cycle takes into consideration that you may have to carry some luggage with you when you head out. It could be as simple as groceries or toys for your children. The rear wheel of the cycle hosts extendable compartments that can hold your goodies for you. If required, then the storage extension can be completely removed as well. Either ways, it’s a modular cycle that suits your daily commuting needs.

The Smart City Cycle is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Super Smart Bike Sharing

This ingenious bike sharing system, designed specifically for the city of Seoul, focuses on the problem of parking capacity in the urban environment where limited space is available. The minimal T-Bikes are contained in vending machine-like, compact modular stations that can be easily relocated to popular areas or even transported as a permanent installation on a truck for mobile delivery. Simply locate and check out bikes directly from a smartphone!

Eroica 2012 recap video

More Furniture for Bikes

Like the rest of the Furniture for Bikes series by Quarterre, these designs aren’t like the typical eyesore of a bike stand. Both draw on the tones & high quality materials of Cherchbi brand’s accessories collection. The exclusive ‘Fell Grey’ color & dark wood finish for the stands have been developed to complement the hand finished leather detailing, which incorporates Cherchbi’s signature Herdwyck Tweed & vegetable-tanned English saddle leather.

The distinctive sculptural form of Hood is architecturally inspired and holds a single bike securely by its top tube. The Design is crafted from folded steel and is hand finished with leather detailing. The leather sleeve protects the bike frame while an angular cut-out can accommodate a bike lock. The Special Edition Hood is presented in the rich ‘Fell Grey’ tone and the extended leather sleeve design is made using Cherchbi’s dark brown English saddle leather and Herdwyck Tweed.

Branchline provides vertical storage for up to two bikes on two sets of adjustable arms which can adapt to a variety of frame shapes. The piece can stand independently against or be secured to the wall. For smaller spaces Branchline can also be inverted, the legs becoming a set of arms for hanging equipment. The Special Edition Branchline is made using sustainably sourced bamboo with a rich dark brown finish. The adjustable arms are hand finished in Cherchbi’s dark brown saddle leather, protecting the bike frame, and complementing the ‘Fell Grey’ tone used on the sculptural folded steel brackets.
