Nail Quills

Epistolary-inspired nail art puts a retro-futuristic twist on the traditional manicure
quill-nail-visual.jpg

London’s legendary name in nails Mike Pocock created Nail Quills for Illamasqua, an over-the-top answer to nail art. The handmade press-ons seem born from some kind of fashion editorial fusing magic powers with a darkly futuristic vibe, also nodding to a bygone era of handwritten correspondence. While it’s technically an old-time motif, the talon-like shape makes for a fierce way to trick out a manicure for Halloween or any time you need a decadent Goth touch.

Nail Quills come in a set of two—one for each thumb—and are available for £35 via waiting list through Illamasqua online. For a more monstrous take on the concept, check out Pocock’s latest, the Toxic Claw.

Ren Micro Polish Cleaner

An exfoliant-and-cleanser-in-one to battle the changing seasons
REN-skin-care.jpg

To help keep skin soft and healthy before winter rolls in, we’ve been using Ren’s Micro Polish Cleanser. The two-in-one formula combines a deep clean with gentle exfoliation to rejuvenate and purify the skin a few times a week, as part of Ren’s Radiance Range. Having used the cleanser for a few months, we’ve now reserved a coveted permanent place for it in the bathroom cabinet.

What made us fans of the British brand in the first place—”skincare as it should be”—all Ren products have an ingredient list of healthy, mostly natural active ingredients derived from fruits and vegetables. The three main bio-actives here include amber micro-beads to start the exfoliation, papain from Mexican papayas to further exfoliate and reduce inflammation and pineapple-based glycolic acid to decongest pores and leave the skin’s surface feeling significantly renewed. Other natural cleansing agents and non-intrusive chemicals in the Cleanser also help to reduce pore size and fine lines.

The 100-milliliter tube sells for $30 from Ren online, as well as from Amazon.

Magnetic Polish

New magnetic polish creates unique nails in seconds
magnetic-nails-1.jpg

London-based Nails inc. has just released a new line of polish products that take advantage of classic technology by introducing a new tool into a manicurist’s arsenal—a magnet. Their Magnetic Attraction series comes in three color options, each named for a London landmark and containing iron powder. Once applied, passing the magnetized cap over this mixture (a small lip keeps it in place without touching the wet polish) produces stunning 3D effects instantly on nails. For consistency, Nails, Inc. used a patterned magnet (hidden from view), which creates the shiny, zebra-like waves as it shifts the metallic particles.

The polish is available as a set of three for £13 a piece from Nails, Inc. or from Amazon for $16 each. Go to Sephora to cop the whole set for $30 beginning October 2011.

Beauty Pick Me Up – Skin Flaws? Masque It!

imageFacial and spa treatments that we used to get at our favorite salon are now becoming more and more readily available in at-home versions.

One such beauty product that’s effective and super simple to DIY is the facial mask. Whether it comes in mask or peel form, the facial mask is a quick way to rectify any skin type. You just have to know what to look for!

Well, that’s where we come in. Check out our tips for the best type of facial mask for different skin types, then click on the slideshow to see some of our favorites!

Normal Skin – This is a simple one! For you, a facial mask should just be for maintenance and prevention. Look for moisturizing face masks chock full of vitamin C or anti-oxidants. Apply a face mask once every 2 weeks.

Oily Skin – Look for a clay mask or a facial peel that will mattify and control shine. Steer clear of anything that’s super moisturizing as this can lead to even more shine. Try a mask once a week for optimum results!

Dry Skin – A facial mask once a week can do wonders for dry skin. Look for options that have vitamin E and are highly moisturizing. A quick tip for a little added hydration? Smooth on a dime sized amount of night cream after your done with the facial mask!

Little Green Conditioning Hair Detangler

Spray-on conditioner detangles and protects delicate tresses in a flash
LittleGreen_Kids_Detangler.jpg

I don’t have kids, but spraying Little Green’s detangler on my hair brought back childhood memories of mom pulling a hairbrush through my tangles as I ran out the door to school. Having also spent hours combing my baby sister’s long, ultra-fine hair (we called it “turning straw into gold”), the leave-in product is perfect for wrangling any unruly mop when time is at a premium.

Fortified with ingredients that moisturize, strengthen and protect (aloe, silk proteins, vitamins B5 and E, etc.), the formula helps with sun damage as well as other hazards of the environment, including chlorine, heat and salt. To use, evenly spray the fine mist on clean hair, maybe finger comb it—no rinsing necessary .

The hypoallergenic, paraben- and sulfate-free conditioner doesn’t come cheap, starting at $15 for an eight-ounce bottle (available from the Little Green site or Amazon), but the spray dispenser means it should last you longer than others.

Nails Inc Arrives At Sephora With Lacquers From London!

imageFor some reason, American pop culture seems obsessed with our pals overseas. Maybe it’s the sexy accents or the simple allure of the unfamiliar, but British TV hosts, singers, actors have taken over the airwaves and the big screen alike.

And the same can be said for our preferred beauty brands – namely nail polish lines! Edgy Illamasqua and the more demure Butter London have already made waves among beauty mavens in the USA, and now Brit-based Nails Inc. has touched down in Sephora stores all over the nation!

Boasting one of the most impressive varieties of hues and finishes we’ve ever seen (and that’s saying a lot!) – from glossy cream shades to shiny metallics and high-impact glitter, it’s tough not to be intrigued by what Nails Inc has to offer the makeup superstore!

Either way, if it’s good enough to grace the hands of models strutting the catwalks during London Fashion Week and covers of high-fashion magazine covers – not to mention compete with Sephora and OPI’s own nail polish line – it’s definitely worth taking a gander!
