Architect Jan Kaplickys Final Project May Get Built After All

0116kap.jpg

You’ll recall that, late last week, we reported that esteemed architect Jan Kaplicky had passed away. In that post, we’d said that his last big project, the Czech National Library, would likely never be built considering the years of difficulties it had suffered while Kaplicky was alive. Turns out there was another building he was working on and to add a more positive ending to a very sad story, there is a chance that it might start construction somewhat soon. The Architects’ Journal dug around and uncovered the concert hall he was designing in the Czech Republic town of Ceske Budejovice and has captured a single rendering of the building on their site, as well as a few additional details. But terrific to know that as soon as 2013, one of Kaplicky’s final ideas could come to life.

An Inside Look at Rem Koolhaas First Residential Building in New York

One of the (what seems like) few major architecture projects still continuing on in today’s lousy economy is Rem Koolhaas‘ first residential building in New York. Located at and named “23 East 22nd Street,” it’s a building that, like other projects by the starchitect, seems to laugh in the face of gravity (or worse, giving it a meaty slap now and again). The site The Real Deal was recently on hand to attend an open door broker meeting and filed this report while also getting the chance to film an interview with the building’s project architect, Jason Long:

A Sneak Peek at Frank Gehrys New Headquarters

0120gehryhome.jpg

As we reported back in early November, starchitect Frank Gehry is planning to move closer to the sea soon, once he moves his company to a new location in El Segundo. While we told you about most of the details back then, a few more have been released about the building itself, some information about the plans on how the move will take place, and most importantly, a handful of images of the new flashy new building. Here’s a bit:

The 3.53-acre campus consists of two 1950s warehouse buildings, which are being upgraded and expanded. A 50,000-square-foot main building will house Gehry offices and design studios, with Gehry Technologies and archives located within the 19,500-square-foot building next door. A trellis structure of large timber planks arranged in an offset X-shaped pattern links the two buildings, and it will be drawn into both interiors to help define the 24-foot-tall spaces.
