Posted in: UncategorizedWarm noggins with colorfully cozy hats inspired by French winds
Inspired by the infamous wind that sweeps through Provence, the mistral, Lou Mistraou‘s aviator-style caps bring luxuriously cozy charm to help get through the gray days of winter. The newly-launched label’s signature helmet-like chapeaus in both lambskin leather ($475) and rain-proof wool felt ($275) feature adjustable chinstraps and wool-padded silk interiors for added warmth.
Each hat is meticulously cut and sewn by hand at one of France’s last remaining milliners. A palette of bright hues combats seasonal doldrums for adults, while the children’s collection (coming soon) is in appropriately sweet pastels.
The caps are available at Kisan, DDC Lab and Jussara Lee in New York City, as well as online.
Hobo S/S 2011 Collection

Posted in: newjerseyHandknit scarves, hats and more by a graphics artist-turned-knitter
Lili, designer and owner of Bayleaf Studio Knitwear, is so fond of making things—from graphics to food—that venturing into knitwear was a natural progression of her interests. Perhaps because she works so much with her hands, there’s an emphasis on the materials that go into products, especially their tactile properties and comfort factor. Choosing wool, felt and paper as ideal materials, Lili sources them from Upstate New York. The line uses 100% organic wool and cotton, including fine merinos and luxuriously soft Alpaca. As the designer puts it, “wool is magic”.
Another notable idea sprung from Lili’s innovative mind is the modification of the homepage of Etsy. Check it out above or go to her site where you can also pick up her hats, caplets, scarves and more, ranging from $35-110.

Packable Bags
Posted in: UncategorizedSeven compressible carry-ons that scrunch, roll and fold away for easy storage
Advertorial content:
When Virgin America asked us to road-test luggage, we followed their lead and looked for bags that not only look good but offer some well-designed practicality too. Saving space in both closets and luggage, low-bulk bags tuck neatly away when not in use and easily unfurl for weekend getaways or to bring back souvenirs. Some pack into their own included pouch while others require your own folding ingenuity, but all the finds below promise to get you and your stuff from here to there with minimum fuss and maximum style.
Extra Small Aviator Bag
Although Red Oxx claims this bag is small, its size is deceptive thanks to a deconstructed design that skips pockets and other features to leave plenty of room for stuff. Made in Montana of sturdy material and with reinforced pressure points, a heavy-duty zipper unzips all the way around allowing it to lie nearly flat. Get it from Red Oxx for $30.
Tote in a Pouch
This nylon bag, in a neutral khaki that goes with anything, folds down and stores in the adorable small pouch provided. It’s affordable too at $38, and available from the MoMA Store.
Lightweight Travel Duffel
Patagonia’s medium-sized version of the packable bag manages to squeeze in extra features including a side pocket with an internal key clip and handles that convert to pack straps. Recently updated with a new super lightweight, double-ripstop nylon in either a yellow-mustard combo or a brilliant turquoise, the duffel stuffs into its own storage pocket. Check the Patagonia site next month when it will be available for $70.
StowAway Bag
It doesn’t get more straightforward than the StowAway Bag, which comes in a zipped pouch and unfolds into a large and lightweight duffel. Made out of water-resistant nylon, it comes in a variety of colors and StowAway donates all profits to charity. Pick one up from Flight001 for $24.
Packable Duffel
For a classic option, Eagle Creek’s Packable Duffel zips into a built-in circular pouch. You can hand carry it with two smaller handles or use the larger strap for over the shoulder toting. It sells on Eagle Creek’s site for $28.
Week Overnight Bag
From Jack Gomme’s “Light” collection, the Week Overnight Bag includes an interior zippered pocket with a detachable zippered pouch. Handles on the outside adjust and their coated fabric is not only very resistant to the elements but acquires an attractive patina with wear. Flight001 has it for $180.
Packables Duffel
Marc by Marc Jacobs does the classic duffel shape in a red print for a basic bag that’s anything but boring. Made from nylon and featuring an interior key loop and velcro pocket, look out for it this spring at Marc by Marc retailers and online for $88.

Tacco Polar Insoles
Posted in: Uncategorized Line shoes with lambswool to warm feet all winter long
Urban living means you don’t always need all the trappings of a technical boot but if your city-slicker shoes are lacking in warmth, you may want to consider the instant coziness an insole can add. While some of my favorites are a pair hand-felted by a family friend, I was lacking time for a crafternoon so I was happy to find these 100% lambswool versions at NYC’s Cowboy Shoe Repair.
Made from cuddly fleece, the wool layer is bonded to a latex rubber layer so that they stay put inside shoes. I’m not sure why Germans excel at foot care products exactly, but the Polar model is one of several that the German maker Tacco offers on their site. Pick it up directly from Tacco’s site for €3 or from Shoe Hardware for $5.
