Having recently designed a swooping quintet of sets for the New York City Ballet and earned his rightful place in Transformers 3, more-than-meets-the-eye architect Santiago Calatrava is looking to the future (the future, Conan?) with his bold design for Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow. We’re not sure what the oxymoronically named museum will contain, or whether the curators will have access to a flux capacitor, but it’s bound to be forward-looking! Unveiled earlier this week at a press conference in Brazil, the renderings and models zoom like a bullet train that has just swallowed a giant reptile. “Rio de Janeiro has captured my imagination,” said Calatrava. “And through the expression of space and forms, I am excited to begin this journey.”
The commission is part of the “Marvelous Port” urban design project, which aims to transform Rio’s historical waterfront into a thriving cultural and residential community in time to welcome the world for the 2016 Olympic Games. Located on Pier Maua, the Museum of Tomorrow is designed to celebrate the natural landscape with a cantilevered roof and facade with moving elements that extends almost to the full length of the pier. The two-story building’s northern location will make the most of a continuous landscaping strip along the southern length of the pier, ensuring that the future doesn’t obstruct views of the past—in the form of the historical Monastery de Sao Bento do Rio de Janeiro.
