Rubell Family Collection Appoints New Director

The doughnut-laden opening of “Beg Borrow and Steal,” an exhibition of 260 works by 74 artists from the Rubell Family Collection, where it is on view through May 29.
Miami’s flourishing Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation, the DEA confiscated goods facility turned 45,000-square-foot contemporary art wonderland, has a new leader. The board of trustees has appointed Juan Roselione-Valadez as director, replacing Mark Coetzee, who last February was poached by deep-pocketed Puma to helm the company’s social responsibility initiatives. Born in Brazil and educated at Cooper Union, Roselione-Valadez has worked at the Rubell Family Collection since 2001, most recently as collections manager and acting director. “We are so pleased to appoint Juan to this position at this pivotal moment in the Collection’s history,” said Mera Rubell, in a statement issued earlier this week. “He has a keen understanding of our family, our collection and the Foundation’s role as a public institution and resource.” Roselione-Valadez worked with the Rubells to organize and produce “Beg Borrow and Steal,” the foundation’s current exhibition that was the talk of Miami during Art Basel. He’s also an intriguingly site-specific choice—when not managing one of the world’s leading collections of contemporary art, Roselione-Valadez enjoys studying the flora and fauna of the Everglades and Florida Keys.
