Powers of Ten competition
Posted in: Uncategorized
The Eames Office and Core77 have launched a competition that challenges participants to create a two-minute video response to the seminal film Powers of Ten by Charles & Ray Eames…
The original film, shown above, was released in 1977 and distributed by IBM. Based on the book Cosmic View by Kees Boeke, Powers of Ten offers a simple but compelling sense of the scale of the universe. Opening on a couple lounging on a picnic blanket, the film first zooms out by powers of ten to the (then) observable universe, before whizzing back down until the camera reaches into the carbon atoms within one of the picnicker’s hands.
The competition invites viewers to create a ‘response video’ to Powers of Ten, celebrating it in any way they might choose, as long as the final film is no longer than two minutes. The team behind it are keen to encourage a community around the competition too, and are allowing entrants to post working materials such as storyboards and early ideas on the Core77 site, so that other users can comment or offer ideas. Participants can then change or update their entries at any point before the deadline of January 10.
The final entries will be judged on their originality, point of view, quality and engagement by a panel including Eames Demetrios, Gary Huswit, Paola Antonelli, Adam Bly, Ayse Birsel and Allan Chochinov. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of $2,000, a Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, plus many other Eames-related goodies. All info on the competition is on the Core77 site here.
