Philippe Starck Gets Into OLED Design

OLED lighting is still just about the greatest thing ever. Super thin, bendable, incredibly light weight. Unfortunately, it’s still an absurdly expensive technology still very much in its infancy, at least in regard to wide-spread retail applications. But when “absurdly expensive” is spoken, you can bet that Philippe Starck is close by. The lovable, on-again/off-again design populist responsible for everything from reality TV shows, mega-yachts, to strange complaints about design in general, has worked with the Italian company Flos in developing a new lamp using OLEDs, putting him in the same spectrum as Ingo Maurer, who released his own lighting system using the technology back in 2008. Called the “Light Photon,” it’s relatively small in size, but not so much in price tag, coming in at $5,700. And to get one, you’ll be ordering a hand-built prototype:

Light Photon made its debut in April, 2010 at the Milan Salone del Mobile. Although it is customary for new introductions to then go through a lengthy development phase prior to being available in the market, Flos has arranged for a limited quantity of hand-made prototypes to be made available now exclusively through Moss. Delivery of these prototypes will take approximately 12-14 weeks.
