Design Observer & Yale School of Management post their 2nd case study: Mayo Clinic

We reviewed the first “raw” case study at the end of August, but Design Observer and Yale have just posted the second in the series, this time on the Mayo Clinic. Here are some details:

Yale School of Management in collaboration with Winterhouse Institute and the Change Observer announces a new online case study: Mayo Clinic: Design Thinking in Health Care.

In the early 2000s, Mayo Clinic physician Nicholas LaRusso began asking himself a question: if we can test new drugs in clinical trials, can we also test new kinds of doctor-patient interactions?

In 2002, in consultation with design firm IDEO, LaRusso and a colleague opened a skunkworks outpatient lab called SPARC, where physicians and designers could test hypotheses about ways in which providers and patients interact.

Within six years, the lab had grown from a small venture to an enterprise-wide Center for Innovation, a dedicated research institute that studies the processes of health care provision, from the initial phone call, to the clinic visit, to the diagnosis and treatment of the problem, to follow-up and preventive care.

In 2010, the CFI was a respected internal consultancy of Mayo Clinic. At the same time, CFI designers and physicians acknowledged that the innovations they had developed were small, and they spoke of the goal of “transformational” change. But there were questions about how the CFI would achieve its stated aspirations. What would a major change in health care delivery look like? How should the CFI’s impact be measured? Were the center’s structure and processes appropriate for transformational change?

This new case study comprises a brief history of innovation at Mayo, an overview of current challenges in health care delivery, detailed descriptions of five projects, and a discussion of challenges faced by the CFI, including internal management, metrics, and strategies for bringing together designers and physicians.

The case study is enhanced by 35 links to primary documents and 33 video clips featuring interviews with Mayo Clinic executives, physicians, administrators, and designers.

United States Artists Announces 2010 Fellows, Launches Microphilanthropy Site

At the top of nearly every creative person’s holiday wish list? Unrestricted grant money. Santa came early for the 52 artists, designers, writers, musicians, dancers, and performers who have been awarded USA Fellowships for 2010. Each receives $50,000 from the national grant-making and advocacy organization United States Artists (USA), which has invested a total of $12.5 million in artists since 2006. Chosen for the caliber and impact of their work, the USA Fellows for 2010 include architects Teddy Cruz and Greg Lynn (pictured), graphic designer and Dot Dot Dot co-editor David Reinfurt, and furniture designer Matthias Pliessnig, whose last name shares the pleasing undulation of his boundary-pushing work. Among the awarded artists are Glenn Ligon, Dara Birnbaum, and Allison Smith. We’ve posted the full list (which includes a conceptual quilter and a creator of war-themed ceramics) below.

But what’s in this for me? You ask. In tandem with the Fellows announcement, USA unveiled USA Projects, a social network-cum-microphilanthropy site where people can connect with and support artists and their work. The new online community is dedicated exclusively to artists living and working in the United States, and they’ve recruited some impressive founding fundraisers. Photographer Catherine Opie and filmmaker Lisa Udelson are raising money to complete a documentary to raise awareness in the debate over gay marriage, and poet Wesley McNair is seeking funding to document his formative epistolary relationship with mentor Donald Hall. Since the beta launch of USA Projects in early May, more than 75 artists have posted projects and racked up $200,000 in pledges from approximately 1,500 supporters. Los Angeles furniture designer Tanya Aguiñiga raised $8,000 to launch a collaborative to help artisans in Mexico whose craft traditions are at risk and comic book author and artist Jim Woodring has raised more than $4,500 to fulfill his dream of building a giant steel tip pen for dramatic public performances. Write on!

Yo! C77 Board Alert: Skeuomorphic Design

1240069716038.JPG
there is an interesting discussion is picking up steam over in the discussion forum on Skeuomorphic Design. Long time poster “Slippyfish” defines a skeuomorph as a derivative object which retains ornamental design cues to a structure that was necessary in the original. This really ranges from things like ornamental shutters on a new home that don’t shut, to the five bolt pattern on Ducati gas caps even though only three of those are now functional, to the shapes of modern shoes which have evolved from cobbler’s wooden foot forms and have little to do with the anatomical foot, but instead more to do with our perceptions of what a shoe should look like.

An area this is happening at a rapid rate is in the convergence of physical and digital experiences. Think of how many apps on you iPhone have skins that look like physical buttons. Sometimes the skeuomorph is a design cop out, and sometimes it helps us bridge the gap between experiences to intuitively know how to use something without any experience. Would Guitar Hero be any fun with out a guitar shaped controller? To that end, Sean brings up the iPad DJ app, which mimics a real turntable visually. Its not what you need, but its what you want!
